  1. Hey all, Since this section of the forum is anyway meant for self-promotion, here it goes: There's this site - http://forum.seo4india.com/. Site by a friend of mine. Do check it out, and register if you feel like it. There's nothing in particular - its still in its infancy, and there's only random talk happening there at the moment - nowhere as vibrant as here. Make a few posts, rant all you want - enjoy! I'd say the main reason for you to have a peek would be to check out the IPB 2.0 (Invision Power Board) which is used there for forums - same as MSFN, but a newer pre-release version. Eventually MSFN would upgrade to IPB 2.0 as well, if I'm not wrong. IPB 2.0 has got lots of new features for members (for moderation as well ) - become a member there to see it in action.
  2. But since I'm not normally communicating on these new-fangled IMs (MSN/yahoo, etc. - I far prefer IRC), I've not explored very much under their hood. I'd like to know, is there any way to know what IM client the person u r talking to is using? (something similar to the browser identification tag?) And anyway to see if a person is actually offline or whether you are just blocked? Well, its a privacy issue and a person is entitled to his/her privacy, but still this is just for the sake of curiosity.
  3. Well, I was seeing what other IMs exist the other day...... I came across gAIM - it is a win32 port of the linux IM for chat networks. It uses plugins to add features/support for networks. Its able to connect to even more networks than trillian. I particularly like the feature where its able to tell you when your chatting partner has closed the conversation window! Anyone's who's heard of unconventional IM-clients, please post them here.
  4. there's 3 ways: 1. Install VMware tools, and thereafter, just drag-and-drop files. 2. Have a shared folder between host and guest OS. 3. Put the files from the host OS into an ISO image, and mount within the VM. Hoping this helps...
  5. Hey everybody - as xper says above, there's another way. You can't search for terms/words/acronyms that are smaller than 4 characters, right? In such cases, just use the search field at the top of the page (its there in every page). The search I'm referring to is the "Google" search bar that you see below the toolbar that shows what member-name you're logged-on as. Its as simple as that. Use the forum's own search function for detailed searches, and for any special needs, there's the google search function integrated right into the page!
  6. @GLO ok, tell me if it works for you - I would say: 1. Startup nero (choose bootable CD from list) 2. drop in entire contents of win98 CD 3. Pick up a win98 bootable floppy-disc. 4. set the boot-sector to be picked up from the floppy 5. write the CD, and use it to install. All this has got to be done on a working machine.
  7. Well, all the best to you so that you can find someone soon. But, to put it mildly, here really doesn't look the place to post ads like this, nor to communicate with people to take up your rooms. That may be just my opinion, though....
  8. I agree about that. I do know that simply searching for "SP2" will throw a few hundred threads, but there are times when it is useful. For example, when SP2 had got released, if you wanted to search for all threads with "RTM" - you simply couldn't! And there's lots more acronyms too, that are just 3 letters across. @_shorty hey dude, one workaround I can recommend is to use that 3 letter term alongwith another term - for example, search for "SP2 AND windows". On the other hand, if the lower limit for search-string size was reduced, you might find that hundreds of threads will show up for a 3-letter search. And that's not being very good to the bandwidth at the server end, and to the processing resources. Nor would it be very easy for your eyes to scan for what you want in that truck-load of search-results. But yes, the "Ctrl+F" feature of your browser comes in handy to auto-search within results - just use the word you'd "Ctrl-F" for in the search box as an additional term - therefore getting around the 4 letter limit. But then, there are times when you'd want to search for all topics in a certain time-period, by a certain member for a 3 letter word. For example, you want to search for all posts "newer than 90 days" made by "Aaron" that contain the word "SP2". You find that you can't! Whereas being able to do so, would be useful - searching for posts by a specific person that contain a 3-letter words will not return nearly as much of useless results. @everybody yah... yah.... there I go again, voicing a meaningless mass of words which argue both, for AND against a subject. Seems to be too much of a compulsive obsession in my brain to mention the pros and cons of anything..... Those of us who've been around here for a long time know how to search for what we want and get it. But sometimes, there is a case for considering what shorty has suggested.
  9. To hide 7-zip extraction GUI window is not possible. One option might be to use the command-line 7zip extractor EXE, and use CMDOW to hide the subsequent window. Or, XPlode allows you to hide windows with specific titles too - so you could use that instead! Hey CipherBit, my nero 7zip SFX is only 18.7 MB.... Its funny how people assume that all files within an installer will be needed. You can go into the "Redist" folder of Nero-installer, and delete the DLLs that aren't needed (first confirm that the DLLs you delete are present with windows itself, or come from any other app - in most cases, WXPSP2 has latest versions of all essential DLLs except for COMCTL32.OCX). Carry out some testing, and you'll eventually find out which files are safe to delete - its a variable list based on what other apps you install - so I can't tell you which ones to delete. Just try deleting all DLLs, and restore them one by one, until setup stops complaining about missing files. Hoping this helps....
  10. Unless you tell EXACTLY WHY it didn't work, no meaningful help can be given. What error message does it give? More details about how the machine hardware/BIOS is set up, and what tools you are using to format might be needed.... And if the machine is new enough to fulfil hardware requirements, you could get a hold of a win2k Pro license (going cheap nowadays, since people started upgrading to XP).
  11. Yes, you can download the PDF version of the guide to have an offline read. Also, you can see it in your own language - check in the guide's home-page to see if there's a translation for your language.
  12. Hey dude, looks good - keep up the good work. This one is compatible with SP2 of XP as well - that's one thing nice about it.
  13. Hi loratio, and welcome to this "great site" (as you said). Thanks for trying to help. Do you have any idea about how to disable the CEIP in Windows Messenger (XPSP2) as well?
  14. CDshell's text-mode nature is quite difficult at times. Try EasyBoot to make your multi-boot CD's boot-loader.
  15. Has this bug which crashes winamp been fixed? (steps to re-produce the crash) 1. Log in as a non-privileged user (normal user) 2. Run winamp (it doesn't matter if it is in classic/modern skin) 3. It clouds over, with the window decorations changing to winxp style. 4. AND THEN A CRASH (exits). Running it as a powerUser/Administrators doesn't show up that bug. Due to the above problem, winamp is next to useless, if you want to make it default player for non-Administrators.
  16. Its a wonder that win98 runs at all...... Just upgrade to a newer version of windows - bcos you'll have to "re-build" that PC yet again in a few weeks/months. Use a bootable win2k/XP CD, and format the systemdrive (C:\) during text-mode setup.

    XPlode v2.00

A new XML-maker might be better. The time you'd spend on making an XML importer - do it on making XPlode use as less resources as possible (the animation uses up a lot of CPU time). BTW, thanks for telling that this one's planned for release a month later - otherwise I'd have gone mad with the spurt of new versions today. (winamp, opera, maxthon, nLite.....).
  18. Well, if that is so, then why do you want to install it in the first place?
  19. No, that's the header for a registry file. You would have seen that any registry file would have to begin with an indicator, which will be one of the two: REGEDIT4For Win95/98 regtweaks. And, Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00For Win2k/XP/2k3 regtweaks. So if you already have that header in your regtweaks file, you don't need this again. Otherwise, you can just copy/paste that section alongwith the header into a new text file, and it will be ready straightaway. But as mentioned above by edbro, the best way to have the CEIP pre-disabled would be to use the MST (transform) file.
  20. Jesus, in a very worried state, convened all of his apostles and disciples to an emergency meeting because of the high drug consumption problem all over the earth. After giving it much thought they reached the conclusion that in order to better deal with the problem, that they should try the drugs themselves and then decide on the correct way to proceed. It was therefore decided that a commission made up of some of the members return to earth to get the different types of drugs. The secret operation is effected and two days later the commissioned disciples begin to return to heaven. Jesus, waiting at the door, lets in the first disciple: "Who is it?" "It's Paul" Jesus opens the door. "What did you bring Paul?" "Hashish from Morocco" "Very well son, come in." "Who is it?" It's Mark" Jesus opens the door. "What did you bring Mark?" "Marijuana from Colombia" "Very well son, come in." "Who is it?" "It's Matthew" Jesus opens the door. "What did you bring Matthew ?" "Cocaine from Bolivia" "Very well son, come in." "Who is it?" "It's John" Jesus opens the door. "What did you bring John ?" "Crack from New York" "Very well son, come in." "Who is it?" It's Luke" Jesus opens the door. "What did you bring Luke ?" "Speed from Amsterdam" "Very well son, come in." "Who is it?" "It's Judas" Jesus opens the door. "What did you bring Judas ?" "The FBI, YOU SCUMSUCKERS! EVERYONE ASSUME THE POSITION AGAINST THE WALL!"
  21. Many of you might have already heard of gmail, and know a lot about it - the only thing being that you might not know someone who already is registered at google mail to send you an invite. Over the last few months, it has almost started to acquire overtones of some sort of status indicator for the owner of a gmail account. Gmail is going public in approximately 3 months, according to rumours (ABSOLUTELY UNCONFIRMED). So gmail invites is not a commodity you'd like to hoard. You might as well get other people join the numbers on Gmail. Hey dudes, I've got a few gmail invites dropped in my account, and would like to distribute it to others.Since I've gained a lot from here, I'd like to also give back here. There's going to be links to invites posted here. I'm going to do so once in every XY minutes, and whoever was the lucky person to get it registered should post that he/she was the one. There's going to be atleast 10 invites given out now, over the next few hours. There's no fun in giving them all out at once. Lots of browsers have a feature to "Auto-reload this page every X seconds". I request those who already have a gmail account to not use these invites - let those who are still outside the circle join ya - beneficial for all concerned.
  22. How do you sign up for it? First you need to have an invite from someone who is already a member. It seems that initially google employees and a few select individuals got invitations to sign-up. Then the gmail members are offered invitations which they can hand-out to friends and family. That chain of getting invited and then giving others an invite continues until google decides that they can't support any more members. Then when they feel that they have got more resources, another new round of invites is sent out, and it carries on.... Once you've got the e-mail id registered, you never know how long it would be before you are offered invites to distribute. It seems to be totally random, with no scientific rationale, nor pattern being followed. Some people do claim that you get invites based on your position in the chain of invites or upon your usage of the service - it is still not a confirmed fact. @SimonSays and tiredoflogins if you keep checking back at this thread, you will find invites for yourselves - right now you two don't seem to be reading at this topic. I'll give out invites right here to anyone who has asked for an invite and is still at this topic/page.
  23. Giving some info from my side (about what Gmail is) would be in order: Gmail is short for "Google Mail". Yes, it is a service provided by Google (the search kings). It has a nice interface, with lots of unique propositions - the major ones being 1000 MB of reliable storage, 20 MB attachment size, and their fresh approach to email through the concept of conversations. And gmail's main features are as follows: 1. Offers 1000 MB of storage. 2. Is webmail but many utilities exist to retrieve it just like POP3 mail. 3. Mail is sorted into "Conversations". 4. It has a very fast interface. 5. Does not append ads to outgoing mails. 6. Has a powerful search facility, so you can search within your mails. 7. Uses fresh concepts for organising mails like labels, starred messages, etc. 8. Easy to use contact list. 9. The assurance that it is google who operates your mail, and so it is quite safe/fast/no-downtime. 10. Not supported on opera - but v7.60 preview1 of opera does have a workaround.
  24. Those of you who haven't yet got gmail - here's your chance. Put in your request - WITHOUT EMAIL ID - just say that you want one. Based on the response, I'll either post invites right here or send it to your email box.
  25. we're gonna try and make this the definitive Gmail thread. All those who want to talk about gmail have hereby been given their call! Let's have info, details, views, and other angles of insight upon Gmail. If you don't know what Gmail is, then this topic is surely not of your interest and you can give it a pass.
