  1. @Jito463 But the NAV versions are far from what we want - the SAV is better since NAV is more heavy on the system. @smc1979 Wow, Cool! Yet another Symantec/Norton bug. I love them. @RogueSpear Yup, me too - always would recommend Symantec products. The fact is that Symantec still is the best in business, in their niche - no other product has as much flexibility, capability (or suitability to system administration, as indeed we have been seeing). And it does its core job well - As much as our dear anti-Symantec flamers try to make the scene foggy (by talking of virus detection, blocking, etc.) - it still detects viruses as perfectly as I'd like to, and I love its script-blocking abilities and IM protection. But in the last couple of years, there's been one-slip-too-many. Unless you're dealing with the absolute latest hardware, there's just no way the Norton 2004/2005 series will sit lightly on your machine. Personally, I've stayed with NAV2002 for my machine at home. And at the time this thread was started, there was a need for some SAV deployment - so thought I might as well have the latest version deployed since anyway SAV series doesn't suck-out as much resources as Norton 2k4/2k5. I still support Symantec. But since some time, I've been checking out other options. And I've almost totally moved over to ZoneLabs. See the latest ZoneAlarm SecuritySuite - it has firewall/antivirus/IM-protection/data-protection - and a good interface to control all of it properly. Its perfectly suited to the company gateway (to block viruses at source itself, without letting it spread to client-PCs). And you don't need to worry about computer-illiterate employees since just one good admin is enough to manage it at the central server. I just can't stop raving about the huge time-dividend (in terms of not much work needed to maintain it) I got ever since I replaced 30 troublesome NAV clients, with one ZASS at the gateway. (and yeah, just as Symantec, there are lot of anti-ZoneAlarm people too, I prefer to ignore!)
  2. @linus The link to "XP Style Hacker" (which you have in the simtel download above) was tried by me. It creates a manifest alright, but its unable to use it - CMD is looking just like it always did!
  3. There is an MSI and a few MSTs in the ZIP that you can download - for VPC2k4 SP1. Must be some way to merge this MSI and the one in the original VPC2k4 package?
  4. No issues seen, that I know of.
  5. That's it - the last straw (which proverbially broke the camel's back). It ended up reducing my system to such a pitiful state, That even trying to start writing CDs would crash it and get it to restart! Five minutes into a new install, and all looks fine (for now). Stay away from Deep Freeze!
  6. You can run it in two instalments. Like, the last entry sets off the next set of runonce keys. The info for that is been discussed many times, just try searching.
  7. Your answer is right above. You need to have this registry tweak: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\WinRAR\Setup] "ShellExt"=dword:00000001 "CascadedMenu"=dword:00000001 "MenuIcons"=dword:00000001Remember, that being a current_user tweak, this .REG needs to be applied at T-12 (through cmdlines.txt). Do tell whether this did what you wanted.
  8. Hey, what is the preferred brand, when you buy a UPS? (un-interruptible Power Supply) Where I live, APC is the one with the best name - and most people who can afford its premium prices go for it. What about you? Which brand do you own/plan-to-get ?
  9. The info for a 2-CD install is right here in the forums. Searching will turn it up. And you can use that, accordingly with XPlode. Make some effort at your end also, PLEASE.... search please.... This is a topic being discussed since a year now. There is *NO* shortage of topics that can help you in this.
  10. I run the above command from a .CMD file (IMPORTANT - FROM A .CMD) at first-logon, and it sticks perfectly. Never seen it fail.
  11. No, if you have the single-file setup.exe, you don't have the .MSI. You need to do what is in my previous post above, to get the .MSI.
  12. The best way is to set that from a Theme. Go here: "C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes" - and edit "Luna.theme" with notepad. You need to look at modifying these lines: [boot] SCRNSAVE.EXE=%WinDir%\System32\logon.scr Save it as "yourfilename.theme" and put it on your uA CD in this folder: "$OEM$\$$\Resources\Themes\" Then, you need to put this in your winnt.sif: [Shell] CustomDefaultThemeFile="%systemroot%\Resources\Themes\filename.theme" So yeah, that's all there is to it. No unecessary regtweaks - although it does exist.
  13. Try installing a codec-pack - the kazaa mega codec-pack, or the one on this forum, by swgreed. If nothing else, then System Restore is all that can return you to a pre-WMP10 state.
  14. Yeah, there is. [Components] WMPOCM=off
  15. Rename it to .zip or .RAR. Extract.
  16. What's up about it? Please look a few posts up. its already mentioned, lol.
  17. RPGs? MMORPGs? hehe.... I play something which atleast makes one think! RTS! Age of Mythology.
  18. Wow, this article still exists. A big thanks to all the people who put their mind to this - its been some time since we heard about this project. How to convert your Windows Server 2003... to a Workstation! After that guide, you can then use the standard procedure that we have, for making WinXP unattended: Unattended WinXP guide Would be a good thing to have listed here - since some people believe that this version of windows is faster/better than WinXP. Moreover, SP1 for Windows Server 2003 is nearing too! To all of you who might use this great MSFN guide - post your results, and any problems that you may run into, in a new thread here.
  19. Someone at MS is in celebration or what? Yet another candidate for slip-stream, go here for the download - news link. Anyone tried this yet? (No, I'm not asking this in fond hopes of a speed increase in VPC - I gave up that as hopeless long ago). It adds better compatibility - and since anyway we do want to update it, we might as well slip-stream it in.
  20. Yes, you can do it. You need something which will change the keyboard mappings/layout. There are a few things to be known: 1. Which windows version. 2. do you want a tool from MS or by a third-party utility. 3. Do you need it from the angle of a developer, or as a consumer. Here are some links which will get you started: 1. You can use Remapkey.exe (Remap Windows Keyboard Layout) which is part of Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools - download details 2. The Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator - details Hoping this helps....
  21. http://www.7-zip.org yes, there you see it - new beta after almost a month. Released 3 days ago. Changelog from 3.13 to this version: We'd rather wait for a non-beta though - to use it.
  22. Hmm.... you mentioned the adobe install-shield tuner, so I went in search of it. And found layers and layers of pages to get to it. All this "Adobe ID" registering crap just for this 16 MB file, which allows you to customize your adobe acrobat install. http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/6.x/tuner601acrobat.exe (16 MB) This is so that we don't need to suffer again, just for this puny file. @chudd You don't really need to use the tuner, BTW. There's more direct methods described here.
  23. Yeah, reget seems to have a poor installer. If you're willing to forgo the integration with browsers, there is a way. (that is, no more auto-catching - you need to give it the address to file to be downloaded manually. If you are using firefox/opera, you'll easily be able to start the download in these, then stop it and copy/paste download link into reget). 1. Install Reget Deluxe in the normall way. 2. Configure it to how you want it. 3. Go to "C:\Program Files\ReGetDx" and delete unecessary files. Also, "default.wjr" in that folder is a plain-text file, edit it according to the settings you want, and delete junk from there. 4. Now copy "C:\Program Files\ReGetDx" to be "$OEM$\$Progs\ReGetDx" on your CD. 5. Also copy "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ReGet Software" to become "$OEM$\$Docs\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ReGet Software" That's it, you now will have the reget files auto-copied to where it was to be installed, and the start menu shortcuts as well. You can use the same (as above) method for other programs that don't have customisable installers (mIRC, maxthon, abiword, etc).
  24. EDIT: mazin, I'm unable to run the program at all, coz its not fully installed. And the installer neither wants to complete installation, nor uninstall itself. @tim It works by making the user sick of itself. Seriously don't even consider using it.
