anyone got a gd windows icon maker s/w to recomm?
prathapml replied to bizfanatic's topic in Customizing Windows
The best possible thing is to convert the image you want to an icon. Pick up any image-editing itility - even MS-Paint will do. Set up a square workspace - like 400x400 pixels or something. Draw, copy/paste, do whatever you want, and make your icon as you think it should look. Then, just open the .BMP using irfanview and resize to how big your icon should be (48x48, or 32x32, or 16.16 - depends on the purpose of your icon). IrfanView can save it after resizing as an icon - save with a .ICO extension. If this is not sufficient, just google for what you want - searching for ico edit make downloadshould give thousands of freeware Icon-editing/making utilities. -
auto-prompt to change password
prathapml replied to prathapml's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried all possibilities in net.exe, and still don't have what I want. My guess is "net user ----" commands are pretty basic in terms of capabilities offered for administration. -

Visual Effects (Finaly works)

That's the bluish sidebar you see - to the left of any explorer window. It only shows up when the tree-view with folders/etc. is closed - that one. -
Deep Freeze - Protect your Hardrive from changes

Yup.That's why I still haven't tried experimenting with it.

1. Even if its not necessary, its always better to uninstall the previous version. 2. And *ESPECIALLY* so with as buggy a driver as ATi's. Personally, I never bother uninstalling a driver - I just keep the new driver for my next re-installation, and have it installed cleanly.

Is there any way to set a user account to forcibly ask them (on next logon) to change their password? Basically, from: Computer Management >> System Tools >> Local Users and Groups >> Users You can click the USERNAME and in "General" tab, you have an option called "User must change password at next logon". I need to have this done unattended - whether from a command-line, or .REG, or some other scripting. A google search revealed cusrmgr.exe from the Win2k resource kit could do this. Now I'd be damned if it was available in *ANY* of the thousands of sites thrown up as results. So if its available for free download, can someone give a link, or if you know of some other way to do the above, do tell me. Thank you in advance.

Well, I apply this: ; Set an exotic Command Prompt color [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor] "DefaultColor"=dword:00000085At T-12 (through cmdlines.txt) - and the colour specifying, sticks. Even if I "Run" CMD, like you are asking, the specified colors stay.

ROFL, pardon me but couldn't help asking - haven't you heard this saying? "Curiosity killed the cat."

Windows Media Player 10 Unattended
prathapml replied to hiphopconnect's topic in Application Installs
Yeah, if you're anyway are going to use WMP - whether v9, or upgrading to v10 - it is no need to set WMPOCM=off. You can simply install WMP10 and and it will replace v9. Use the WMPOCM=off only if you hate WMP and don't want it to be accessed. -
Maybe you can modify this to your purpose. Examples of a similar sort of add to CPL: ;Show TweakUI at Control Panel [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}] @="TweakUI XP" "InfoTip"="Starts the TweakUI program which, allows you to customize advanced options and Settings in Windows to your liking" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\DefaultIcon] @="%SystemRoot%\\\\System32\\\\tweakui.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\Shell\Open\command] @="tweakui.exe" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\ShellFolder] "Attributes"=dword:00000030 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}] @="Tweak UI ;Clipboard (becomes clipbook) Control Panel Icon [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4de05bc9-69f6-4bfc-8094-5e1069f2f51f}] @="Clipboard" "InfoTip"="Starts the Clipboard" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4de05bc9-69f6-4bfc-8094-5e1069f2f51f}\DefaultIcon] @="%SystemRoot%\\\\System32\\\\clipbrd.exe,0" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4de05bc9-69f6-4bfc-8094-5e1069f2f51f}\Shell\Open\command] @="clipbrd.exe" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{4de05bc9-69f6-4bfc-8094-5e1069f2f51f}\ShellFolder] "Attributes"=dword:00000030 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{4de05bc9-69f6-4bfc-8094-5e1069f2f51f}] @="Add Clipboard to the Control Panel"Hoping this helps....

It needs to be run from a .CMD, I suppose. Bâshrat the Sneaky has said how to run it anyway - did you see that he says to run it from GUIrunOnce ?

@bonedaddy That registry section you posted looks like you went to a lot of trouble. The CLSID and all..... ; Disable Autorun [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom] "AutoRun"=dword:00000000 ; disable Autorun for all Drive Types [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091It is far simpler. This is what I use, and I believe I put it into the regtweaks in the first-post of this thread as well. (If I did not, pardon me, lol).

Windows Media Player 10 Unattended
prathapml replied to hiphopconnect's topic in Application Installs
Yeah, if you set WMPOCM=off, it will be there, just no links and stuff for acessing it. You can even manually run "wmplayer" and get WMP! But if you install WMP10, or an update/hotfix to WMP9, the access-turn-off of WMP will not be valid anymore - the update will bring back the shortcuts to WMP. -
Please read rules of the forum. (link to that, is in my signature as well)

script or command to modify hosts file
prathapml replied to Mman's topic in Networks and the Internet
Do you specifically need the user to say "yes" ? Because if not, then it'd be simple to directly add what you want, into the host file. But if you do want user to say yes, this will do the task you want, copy/paste into notepad, and save as .BAT: @echo off TITLE Modifying your HOSTS file COLOR 85 ECHO. :LOOP SET Choice= SET /P Choice="Do you want to modify HOSTS file ? (Y/N)" IF NOT '%Choice%'=='' SET Choice=%Choice:~0,1% ECHO. IF /I '%Choice%'=='Y' GOTO ACCEPTED IF /I '%Choice%'=='N' GOTO REJECTED ECHO Please type Y (for Yes) or N (for No) to proceed! ECHO. GOTO Loop :REJECTED ECHO Your HOSTS file was left unchanged >> %systemroot%\Temp\yourinstall.log ECHO Finished. GOTO END :ACCEPTED ECHO Carrying out requested modifications to your HOSTS file echo 127.0.0.1 local host >> %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts ECHO Finished. GOTO END :END ECHO. EXIT Its quite self-explanatory. While the rest of the command-line script will do your yes/no part, the below line is what does the actual modification. echo 127.0.0.1 local host >> %WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hostsThat is, you can "echo" whatever line you want into the HOSTS file, using the double-forward symbol. The location of the hosts file above, is given for win2k/XP/2k3. For win95/98/ME, its located at a different place. -
Well.... Blame it on my lack of sleep, but I don't get what you mean. Are you reporting another bug, or are you saying one of the above is _NOT_ a bug? If it *IS* a bug, did you first try refreshing the page, or trying this on a *CLEAN* browser (with no history/cookies). Ya, I know that you'd have done this, but I'm just asking this to get more info out of you. 'Coz to be able to fix it, we need steps to *reproduce* the same behaviour.

Questions : How to Apply WinRAR GUI Patch?
prathapml replied to iwod's topic in Application Installs
That's because we're Pro's who have better things to do in life than sit around doing worthless things that will be rendered irrelevant once the next version comes out?Only 12-year old, freckled, jobless kids do it! We want functionality - and winrar is pretty good by itself. I know the patch - its not all that much of an improvement ofer default winrar skin, anyway. Looks matter, but to what extent! Looking at the n00bs who are filled with gas about it, you'd think the gui patch was an official one. But no, its just a hack created by a *HUMAN* - if he has made just one wrong modification, your winrar experience is accursed with bugs. -
------- Have a small bug. When going in to view any news article from the main-page, the link to go back to front-page on left-side bar doesn't work. It simply re-loads the current page (because the link is to the current page itself on non-IE browsers). Steps to reproduce the above: 1. Going to any article from front-page, example - clicking this. 2. Now in the left-bar, there's a hyper-link at top-left of page - called front-page. 3. Now clicking that goes to re-load current-page, but doesn't take me back to front-page. Used to happen even before, but I thought its only happening to me. But then after confirming this, mustered enough courage to report this! Tested on Opera 7.60p1 and firefox 0.10 - both have this problem. Maybe something about standards-compliancy.... But when testing in IE6SP2, it works perfectly (in the way it should). But still, opera and firefox users are not such a small group. --------- One more! This also been around ever since I first came to msfn. If I come to the msfn home-page (msfn.org/index.php), and then login from there (using link at top of page), the login is not valid on the forum! Going to any page inside the forum says I haven't logged-in. In other words, I'm a valid member login, on front-page, but forums says I'm a guest. But if I login from forums, the login is valid for everything (the forums, the main-page, and to view all the articles). Could it be related to the integration of VirtuaNews with IPB - like only a one-way caching of logins, due to the virtuanews module not being given write permission to forums' side of login. And this one happens with IE *AND* opera. But interestingly, Mozilla/firefox is not having this problem - its able to remember my login whether I login at front-page or at forums. And telling this for the sake of more details - I have disabled that prompt which asks whether I want it to remember password. But that should not matter, I think. --------- Hehe... what a bad dis-agreement between browsers out there. I have no problem even if these weren't fixed - I have all the browsers in use, so I just use a different browser if one doesn't display a page properly, lol. But since I noticed this bug, thought I'd rather report it.

Deep Freeze - Protect your Hardrive from changes
prathapml replied to Zilevoli's topic in Software Hangout
haha... I meant featured in the sense that you wouldn't post about it unless you tested and liked it. And you won't like it unless it was good. And you'd have enough experience to tell us what is good. Well, this topic is a different case though. Looks like you tested it and forgot to tell that you had problems with it. Well never mind, Deep Freeze got a bit of bad press, lol. Check out searching for it on google, This page appears as one of the top results now! And yeah, breaking out a huge list of software is good. We'd be happy to see what interesting products are out there. Just don't forget to post the negative points as well. And Deep Freeze is worthless for my home PC, but it'd be a *HUGE* benefit for my job. Woulda been nice if it worked good. And uA is un-attended - I'm a bit lazy on typing, lol. -
If that is your case, why do you want it to install from SFX? Make one big SFX of the whole thing - or don't even bother doing that, just use the original archive. (using your .CMD or RunOnceEX or XPlode or WIHU or whatever ) Just have it extract silently to any location on HD ("%systemdrive%\install\Nero" for example). Then the next commands in your silent install should run them (start /wait %systemdrive%\install\Nero\Nero6\setup.exe /whatever /switches). And the command after that, to delete that folder (RD /S /Q %systemdrive%\install\Nero).

Deep Freeze - Protect your Hardrive from changes
prathapml replied to Zilevoli's topic in Software Hangout
Yeah, that's what I always do, with any app that I want to test out. But since this one was "featured" on msfn forum - I placed some certainty in it that it would work fine... BTW, I don't *EVER* uninstall anything. I simply install what I want, and let my OS partition fill-up. Since I anyway do a clean re-install every 3 or 4 days. (yeah, that's kind of extreme, but I need to do that everytime I need to test my uA on real hardware - I do a ratio of 6 tests on VMware to 1 test on real machine). -
@smc1979 You have the 9.0.0.1400 version, right? Why not try moving to v9.0.1.1100 - which is the newest. Your bug might have got fixed.
