One safe way of doing this, is to do a system restore. Restore to a point in time, when you did not have the current version installed.

Unattended Website Additions
prathapml replied to Alanoll's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Grrrr.... I see one more post like this after the new guide is out, and I will explode! link Ain't it already clear enough to them! Please have this (or something similar) included in the guide: -
WinRAR itself gives you the ability to create DOS-compatible SFX archives. Go to the last tab of SFX options, and choose the DOS SFX module. Though, the DOS module does not quite give as many possibilities (for unattended) as the win32 version does. Also, remember DOS limitations - eight-dot-three file naming convention. While winrar can make SFXes for DOS from windows, you can also make SFXes for DOS from DOS. Download RAR for DOS

Repair option missing in Unattended win
prathapml replied to qwerty009's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
No no..... you haven't done anything wrong. The presence of winnt.sif by itself removes ability to repair/recovery console and add MassStorage drivers. If you want to use repair, use your non-unattended CD (i.e., slip-streamed with the latest SP, but no winnt.sif). -
This is actually the main problem with using an installed copy of windows on hardware different to the the one it was originally installed on. Make an unattended install disk to save yourself the worries.

@bmn Use cdimageGUI. Its good - never seen it generate a corrupt ISO till now. The "good compression" is because you might have enabled file optimization (encode multiples of identical files only once). That's just right - perfect when you want to add more things, or are making a multi-boot.

Exactly! So a third option saying neither love nor hate SHOULD have been there.

Unintentional Classic Theme After Silent Install
prathapml replied to Cartoonite's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Great!Probably the recommended time gap, about initialising the interface, was recommended without a reason? ha ha Whatever theme is seen at shutdown, gets used as the theme at next startup. So yeah, as they said, increase the time gap so as to let the desktop load. -
dunno.... no idea.

Manna from heaven. Sweetest thing to happen in ages - that's nLite. BTW, there would be some people who neither hate nor love nLite - with neutral feelings. There should have been a poll option for those.

"Carriage return" is nothing but an "Enter" key-stroke. (also represented as c/r) It has its origins in the days of type-writers whose (ink-impact-head) carriage had to be returned to starting point again, to start a new line.

Unintentional Classic Theme After Silent Install
prathapml replied to Cartoonite's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Ha ha.... As for the star, its a gradation scale of how crazy you are getting, by the day. naah... just messing with ya... It means you are past a certain point on the forum. There's boundary marks set, which say, okay you've completed 50 posts so you get rid of the "newbie" title from your user title (below user name) and get 1 star. Now why does those stars exist? Its nothing but some sort of level-defining factors used on forums, to prompt you to be more active on the forums. For example, if you make 100 posts, you get 2 stars - so that's a motivating factor (sort of). Plus, as you get more stars your member title would change too (advanced member, senior member, etc.) - because its obvious that if you made 500 posts and still didn't get banned, those posts weren't spam/junk, there was some value behind it. As you look around, you will see how people with different numbers of posts have different stars. But don't give too much relevance to that - sharing knowledge is all we care for. At the end of the day, we are all here for precisely that - to know more (and socialise/make friends too, probably). -
Unintentional Classic Theme After Silent Install
prathapml replied to Cartoonite's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Cartoonite if you feel down in the dumps about the refusal of the non-classic theme to load, this should pep you up: My $Docs folder *STILL* seems to be acting funny. Its still unpredictable. It works perfectly fine (with files copying over) once, and doesn't the next time. Nothing has changed in the meantime - both times its the same CD, same hardware, same everything. (of course, $Docs not working, doesn't critically affect me, so its okay - which is why I haven't bothered to find out what is causing that). take heart, your culprit will be found and fixed too - on one fine day, lol. But I can give one suggestion though - try starting from scratch once again, and adding things one by one, and testing after each addition. -
new build seems to be out (51.6 MB)

Thanks tommyp, for all the hard work you've put into this instructions. It will surely benefit a lot of users.

Woohoo!! One monster of a comp there. The only thing I have to add here, is that an assembled configuration will be more tuned towards your own requirement. Get some dealer with good connections with the industry to assemble it for you, and he will even take care of any replacements or other head-aches with the hardware. The advantage of going for a branded machine normally is the bundled software - but I'm sure you don't need that, its easily taken care of. Plus, since the software cost is reduced from the total cost, the price will be lower too. And as drew says, a major minus point has got to be, that branded machines will not allow you to choose the MoBo/chipset that you want.

Its indeed nice. Waiting for release! For Image attaching, use EazyShare and post IMG tags instead. Topic moved to General Discussion.

How to customize uA Program Files directory?
prathapml replied to Cartoonite's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
My my my..... no need for slapping wrist, and such - we are all here to help each other. By now, you have been here long enough to know that flaming, criticizing, etc. aren't seen here at all! Just cheerfully ask for whatever you want. Okay, now first of all, I will ask you which method of install you prefer. 1. Using the standard installer (downloaded one). 2. Using the winamp MSI re-packed by Alanoll. About method 1: Its simple. You can just use "/S" switch and then kill the winamp player when it starts up. But no fine control over the process (location to install, associations, etc.). I prefer this method because location, associations is all do-able through registry and file-moving later on. About method 2: This one requires you to use a lot of switches (for fine tuning). Its easier for new-comers to use. The downside being, you have to wait for alanoll to make the MSI whenever a new version comes out. Now, since I see that you prefer the MSI, a piece of suggestion: Do not name the MSI parameter file as "winamp.ini" - because the winamp configuration file is also having the same name. Name the parameter file as "WA507inst.ini" or something like that. Why? Because, that way you can pre-configure winamp. I mean.... configure your winamp to how you like it, from preferences (skins, double-size, ripping, whatever). Then go to "C:\ProgramFiles\winamp" and copy away winamp.ini (that is where your winamp settings are stored). So now you can keep all required files in one directory: winamp507_pro.exe WA507inst.ini winamp.iniAnd example of how you might like to use it below: Winamp.msi /qn ini=WA507inst.ini copy /Y winamp.ini "%ProgramFiles%\Winamp"I hope I have put the above in understandable form.... Okay, now that history and mystery is done with, we come to the point of how to choose which folder to install to. Interestingly, this topic has been discussed about a week ago. Taking the winamp MSI as an example: Winamp.msi INSTALLDIR="C:\Programs\Players\Winamp" /qnSo in the above command-line, you will see that we are using the INSTALLDIR property. It can either be specified in command-line, or in the case of winamp, add that to be one more of the properties that you have specified to be used, in WA507inst.ini. The INSTALLDIR property is a standard one usable with most well-made MSI-based installers (including MS-Office). Note that this property has one limitation which (according to me) is very damaging - You absolutely have to specify full paths (can't use %SystemDrive% and similar variables). So lets say you coded your batch-files/switches to install winamp to some location on C: or D: drive. Then, one day you decide to install from your uA CD to your F: drive instead (because you don't want to disturb C: or D:) - but what does your dis-obedient winamp installer do? It goes and installs in C: partition! (because you specified INSTALLDIR) Whereas you expected all apps to install in F:\ instead! Now, when I'm telling this, it doesn't seem like such a big deal, but this sort of unpredictable/non-uniform actions is a major problem (as you'll see in office environments). The aim should always be to standardise everything, and get everything on your disk to behave in exactly the same way, no matter how much the environment differs, across a thousand PCs. So we're back to square one - you'd rather let the installer install to where it wants. But still, if you just want to have something done "fast and easy" - using the INSTALLDIR property of MSI (i.e., the Windows Installer) is the way to go. For Install-Shield/WISE/Inno/Nullsoft install-packages, the process is not quite as simple as for the MSI ones, but we'll leave those for another day, as of now. And doing the "SET PROGRAMFILES" thingie is really a round-about way, best avoided. Onwards to your RunOnceEX plans, I'd recommend don't bother with it. In its time (a year ago) - the RunOnceEX method with its graphical looks, indeed sounded like a god-send. But now, I'd say its not worth the effort you put in, to move from simple batch-files to RunOnceEX at all. Rather, stick with your .CMDs, and when you feel you have a grip on the basic things that you want your CD to do, move to XPlode/WIHU/WPI (or some such sort of tools). Those tools make RunOnceEX feel like a dog-send. RunOnceEX has none of the good-looks nor selectable install, nor complex operations, nor ease-of-use that the other tools will give you. Just one suggestion to you, though: Its frightening to see large amounts of text and take time to read it without knowing whether you would be able to help the person or not. So we'd take the easy way out, and skip reading that post. So if you'd like replies to your questions, I'd suggest that you give EXACTLY ONE-LINE summary in simple words, of what you'd like to know - at the end or beginning of your post (and *THEN* whatever else details you feel is necessary to help us to get you what is desired). For example, in this topic, you could have set out at the conclusion: This is *NOT* a slap on the wrist, just a friendly pointer, to ways in which you can make your post attract more answers.Have fun! -
