  1. nice to hear from you that it works fine. As for me, I'm still annoyed with that tool. It is actually supposed to be a replacement of the old nVidia System Utility - which allowed you to manually over clock. This new nTune does not offer the ability to manually specify ,my over-clock at all. I wish a new version for us with manual setting of speeds would be released....
  2. This topic is not "General Discussion"... Please think and post in correct section next time. For now, * topic moved
  3. haha... very true! No real co-operation at all in that association. @DL hmm... the US geologists tried to warn... But its the ocean-rim countries that should have been concerned and alerted others.
  4. It's an Install-Shield app - use standard methods, that's all.
  5. Thanks for the information. But it seems kmeleon.org the domain is not valid anymore. I found the thread you are referring to, over here - http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/forum/read....i=20737&t=20398 I wish the devs continue to work on it though - its a 1.2 years-old build download now.
  6. @rendrag Yes, some progress is made. That is a known issue with winrar SFXes. Your ff or tB installer is not getting started until after something else, it seems. Just use the SFX to silently extract to defined location (like %systemdrive%\install\apps\firefox). Then run the MSI from there. Don't use winrar SFX for running executables/setup. Try the MSI from the link totoymola has posted above.
  7. I still say keep your C: to be just 7.5 gig, and whatever heavy installs you want to do (like games, or very big apps), do those on some other partition which you have designated for the purpose. The reason is, systemdrive should not exceed natively bootable limits. And then, you should also have your C: small enough to keep it fast (and have atleast 2-3 GB free space on C: at any point of time).
  8. @Incroyable HULK Hey, that's supposed to be not allowed.... @McoreD Doing that goes very close to "cracking" - it will lose you product support services from MS. For WinXP, you can actually change the product type, but key will still be required. Since setupp.ini cracking is not allowed, try googling for it.
  9. Maybe ProductKey in place of ProductID will work.
  10. Well, visited that site just now and it has lot of info. (oh, and it also says the "atleast 3 partitions" which I had said )How you setup your partitions depends on your own usage patterns, so you know best about what's good for you. There is no "right" way or "wrong" way...
  11. @totoymola I believe the first build of yours... was the one I absolutely loved (except for the VBS ). It had BBcode, FireFTP, IRC, gmail, Noia skin, etc. Well, let me just say that build of yours helped to quieten some people, who were complaining that firefox did not have features comparable to other browsers. It was literally the FireTRUCK with jam-packed features. Just installing from MSI did the job (without needing SFXes). haha... Actually now its called firefox Superman edition here! great job indeed I think even rendrag's problem might be solved by using that first build (it was 18 MB in size, the one with andr bookmark). It is very simple to use, and running it as one of the first installs (before applying any tweaks to change default handler of VBS) should work fine.
  12. Oooh, new builds... so I'm outdated now Okay, I'll dl your newest build. But I don't know from where? Hmm... and as for the cscript: Try running cscript at a CMD window to see all switches. In fact, whenever you run a VBS, it is either cscript or its graphical-equivalent wscript which handles the script. So, what can be done is to change from running (for example) profile.vbsduring install, to this command instead: cscript //B profile.vbsThat will silently run the VBS without any problem on any machine (which has Windows Scripting installed). Let me explain the above... the above command basically routes profile.vbs to be run through cscript.exe, which is the normal action anyway. To make it clearer, try this: 1. Make a new text file (new.txt) on desktop, type anything into it. 2. Now rename it to "new.ttx" - you will see that clicking on it brings up "open with" dialog box. 3. Cancel out of the "open with", and start a CMD window instead. cd desktop notepad new.ttxTyping the above commands will make you go into your desktop folder (where new.ttx is located) and then route new.ttx to be opened by notepad. This concept of getting the original app to run its associated file, is what is done by making cscript.exe to run profile.vbs In fact, the above can be very useful in some ways. Rename "#!@$.mpeg" to "plain.gpm" instead. Then open a command window in that folder and open that video with its proper viewer: wmplayer plain.gpmSo now, you see that no one can open that video and view it except for you. Becomes very useful, if you get what I mean... Oh well, I hope the above explanation helps in some way... Because you have already said you aren't using VBS anymore. But what is the link to new build then? Thanks!
  13. Now to rip it apart myself First off, this disk is not a new idea at all.... many been having something better than what you describe, since ages. seraph, it rather looks like the post here was simply made in a generic manner so as to be posted on different forums at once. That by itself can be thought of as negative.... Do we have real gurus was a title which you shouldn't have chosen to use.... even if it meant catching instantly the attention of everyone. you're looking to find gurus here to do all those simple things? Why, for a warez disk? And doing such a disk is not quite what could be called "rewarding" - rewarding to whom and in what way? So many people who have read through the msfn guides already have such a disk made. And its going to be illegal to distribute it. And who is going to legitimately buy all those MS OSes and for what? (sorry, investing in one microsoft OS was bad enough....) Linux distros on a multi-boot? Its too difficult to be worth the trouble (and its like... this month's version will be outdated before next month) Open-source software on the same dvd as MS... not really a bad idea, but *WHY* ? What's important is the goal, and commercial apps do it nicely here. The step-by-step instructions/guide is a nice idea, the catch is that most do-it-yourself guides are not very simple to make or to understand. flyakite's guide does exist on msfn here.... pretty good too. If you do make something else, do give a link to the site and I'll be happy to check out or contribute in some way. As for the drool-worthy DVD.... I don't know how long you will have it in your hands at all. Such a vast lot of items on one disk, for PERSONAL USE? naahh... it can only mean it was not bought legally. As for this kind of a disk in a corporate environment, its no big deal at all, and in fact, using physical media like disks is frowned upon for its potential negatives. Which only leaves out the possibility of sharing/circulating the disk - which will instantly put the drool in a court-room. MS stock values might not drop with all that much of their products on the DVD. It can't possibly be free on the right side of the law. Make that DVD opensource-only, and you'll see almost no takers there. Gates will keep his job, and so will the open-source movement. Both have their own niches.
  14. @everybody Hey, before you slam his post, try to see the thought behind it.... It might even be beneficial. Plus, he's looking for a ready-made disk like that (or easy guide to do the same). In the current form, the multi-boot guides are not easy enough to be used by newbies. (but then should newbies want a disk like that!)
  15. totoymola, there's 2 things that i think could be responsible for this. 1. After install, on first run of firefox, the MSI still does a "configuring itself" (progress bar). 2. Remember the VBS script popping up in notepad instead of being run? This can happen if he changes default behaviour of VBS from Open to Edit (like I do). This would mean that the MSI won't go ahead and finish the setup until the notepad window is closed - and the notepad window is not displayed at T-12! To fix the second probable cause, you'd need to change the installer to run the VBS using cscript.exe
  16. That enable QuickLaunch tweak that you see in the reg attachment of first post in this thread.... It works perfectly for me, and other long-time forum members. Many recent entrants though, do not read through the full instructions, and therefore are unable to see it work. Apply it at T-12 using cmdlines.txt. That's what you need to do to get it working. If someone can't figure out what that means, I'm afraid its not the fault of anyone ELSE here.
  17. I'd say having ProgramFiles and Docs&Settings on other partitions is really of no use in most cases. Even in your case, I'd say just keep those folders on C: itself. REASON: Let's say you install MS-Office. If ProgramFiles is re-located to D:\Programs (by using winnt.sif settings), then you have MSOffice sitting at (D:\Programs\MSoffice). So after this, let's say you re-installed winXP on C:\ now (and ProgramFiles folder still is re-located to D:\). First, this is going to cause file conflict with folders already existing there. Next, your MSoffice folder in there is useless now. Just having the MSoffice folder/files is no use, you need registry settings, files in system folders, and so on - all of which can only be done best by re-running the setup for MSOffice. This situation is the same for most other apps too. The bottom-line is, there's more problems that are possible, than benefits. Same goes for pagefile too - just leave it on C: itself (all the crazy kids do tell you to move it to another partition, but it can cause mess-ups). I don't quite have the energy to type up *WHY* pagefile should be on C: itself, but believe me its better that way. As a matter of fact, re-locating the Progfiles, Docs&Settings and pagefile to other places can be beneficial. But when? Its only beneficial if the destination partition is blank, and also is on a HD different from C:\ itself. This will give you a performance increase, since the load is not heavily placed on one HD alone. So can you really afford 4 hard-disks for this? (one each for windows main folder, Progfiles, Docs&Settings, and pagefile) And then, YET ANOTHER hard-disk for data. Microsoft is not quite as dumb as we might like to think, the default settings exist for a reason. Now to come to disks and partitioning.... 1. The larger and faster HD can be Primary Master. The second HD can be Secondary Master. The DVD/CD drives can be attached as primary/secondary slaves. Between CD/DVD drives, connect the optical drive that you use least, to the primary channel. In fact, you'll get best performance if the faster HD is primary master and no other drives are connected to that channel. 2. I keep a max. of 7.5 GB partition for windows OS. This has to be a Primary partition at beginning of first HD. It should only be 7.5 GB because partitions larger than that are not bootable natively (the importance of that is realised if/when you install a second OS like linux on your PC). 3. If you have a second HD, make a 2 GB partition at beginning of disk, to be used for page-file. 4. All other partitions you create, can be created within "Extended" space as Logical partitions. I like to ensure that no partition is larger than 15 GB - simply because if I accidentally format it, or a virus hits any partition, it will only affect the 15 GB of that partition alone (I don't want everything to get wiped out at once ). Use NTFS file-system for all partitions (it will be faster). Ensure that atleast 3 partitions are made on each HD (think of it as 3 kingdoms - if one of the kings throws you out, atleast you can take shelter in some other kingdom). 5. That's all, ensure that you don't save any data on C: - all required files/folders should be saved on any of the other partitions (which you had created for data, in point4 above). And if you have any temporary data you want to keep, you can easily keep it on C: itself (for example, songs that you don't really like, or shareware utilities that you downloaded and installed). No need to uninstall anything at all, because a re-format of C: would anyway wash out all this junk. 6. So its done now. Next time you think that the system is slowing down, just take out your uA CD, re-format C: and start install. Come back to PC half-hour later to find all your data intact, all your reqd apps installed on C:, and one monster of a fast system.
  18. I did not say worry about easy stuff later... Its actually like learning alphabets (A,B,C...) before constructing words. So starting with batch-files will have you understand what you're doing. Otherwise, if you use one of those tools, it will make things too easy, you might not understand what exactly is happening, and won't know to fix any troubles with it. And trust me, you got to be very lucky to have a perfect uA CD without any problems on the first try - you WILL have things not working and things weird, etc.... (in such cases, you better stick to batch-files since its easy to fix errors). As for what you've posted above, it looks like you pretty much have a good idea of it. All of what you've posted about your batch things above is correct, except for slight corrections: 1. %systemroot% - that refers to path of System's root (OS folder), which turns out to be "C:\Windows". 2. %systemdrive% - now this is "C:\". 3. "start" will start the program you specified... and start /wait is for the purpose of (as you have correctly stated already)The "/wait" that you see there is a switch of the start command. 4. That's two lines, and that command is not needed if you did not already feel a need for it.5. Yes, but that .reg file has to be created by you (containing your own name and serial key).6. About the switches for "shutdown" and "RD" commands, I suggest you look it up. Run this command in the command prompt: shutdown /?Similarly, rd /?Do it similarly for every command that you want to know more about. The "slash what" switch (as I call it) will tell you what switches are usable with the command/program, and gives a short description of what exactly each switch is used for. Hey, about the long post, may I give a suggestion? Use numbering in posts, if it deals with more than a single question at once. That way, one of us can easily say some thing like (answering question number 4) and get down to answering it. Someone else would come along, and say (answering Q2) and answer it. I mean, its easier to keep track of, if you break down multiple questions with numbers. Hoping this helps....
  19. I agree with what you said. The tsunami hit Sri Lanka two hours after Indonesia was hit. And half-hour after that, India was hit. Indonesia could have alerted neighbouring countries (so SriLanka's deaths would have been lower), and SriLanka could have alerted India (that half-hour is **** **** useful to run away inland where the water won't kill you). I'd like to know if the scientists and meteorologists were sleeping at that time! (considering that the tsunami struck early in the morning)
  20. @greekos_kentos It might take some minutes before anyone can fully understand how the search works (in general - even google search is not learnt instantly, it took some learning before you understood how to use it for your purpose, right?). The search on all Invision forums is the same.... and its very powerful (much better than phpBB which is suddenly enjoying popularity). Whatever I search, I get the result I'm looking for, how is that? Just take 5 minutes to learn....
  21. rupert86, please do not bring religion into discussion. No more posts about that.... Lets get back on topic. While prayer is okay, humans should take care of themselves as well. When the tsunami hit Indonesia and was known to be progressing towards India, that news SHOULD have been instantly transmitted to the relevant authorities. All the countries along the coast could have given a warning asking people to stay away from the beach (and find a good place to stay in till water level reduced).
  22. What is office sk3 ? (do you mean 2k3?) Anyways, if referring to installed version, start any off2k3 app (like word) go to Help> About Microsoft Word If it has a "(11.6359.6360) SP1" string in first line, it is having SP1 installed. If you're talking about install-source, check the version of the executables in: o2k3-folder\PFILES\Office11\For example, the version of word.exe should be "11.0.6359.0" If you don't have .CABs in your install source, you can be sure its an admin-install point, and some updates have been merged into it.
  23. My codegen PSU is very quiet... and cheap too. (maybe not the quietest though)
