  1. Does anyone know if it is possible to set dial up networking as an NT Service? Here is the situataion. There is a XP Pro Machine that is used for ICS. The provider is DSL. The machine is isolated and there is no access to it. Just Remote Desktop. The problem arises when the machine is updated and rebooted. Once rebooted, it comes to the Welcome screen and no one logs in. Since no one logs in, no one is able to invoke the command to connect to the internet. Currently, the solution is to use another machine connected to the network that has Outlook running. Outlook is set to check for email every 10 minutes, when Outlook checks for email, it will invoke ICS and complete the connection. But that requires you to wait or someone has to launch a browswer to initiate the connection. Not practical during the weekends as no one is there and the machines are all turned off. What I want to know, is if there is a way to ivoke the DSL connection by setting it up as a service, this way it will connect automatically when the machine is turned on.
  2. What about GWFSPIDGen.dll? Does it just have to be copied into \windows\system32 and not registered? Basically, copy both GWFSPIDGen.dll LegitCheckControl.DLL to $oem$\$$\System32 and then add regsvr32 /s LegitCheckControl.DLL ------------------------------------- Edit: Never mind. I just took a closer look at the cab file. GWFSPIDGen.dll does not have to be registered.
  3. I guess it is a matter of preference. I have used both WinRAR and 7ZIP and I prefer the 7ZIP method. I find it more flexible. Use what you are comfortable with.
  4. This will prevent Windows Messenger or MSN Messenger from being installed ;Prevents Windows Messenger from being installed [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client] "Disabled"=dword:00000001 "PreventAutoRun"=dword:00000001 "PreventAutoUpdate"=dword:00000001 "PreventBackgroundDownload"=dword:00000001 "PreventRun"=dword:00000001 This is all you need to prevent the update nag ;Prevents Windows Messenger from being updated [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Messenger\Client] "PreventAutoUpdate"=dword:00000001 "PreventBackgroundDownload"=dword:00000001
  5. If you want a Plextor, get the cheaper Benq 1640. The Plextor 740a is just a rebranded Benq 1640. I recommend the NEC 3540a. It has all the features you need. I have the older 3500 and it works great. I also use a Plextor 52x Premium CD-RW. DVD Writers just don't work as well as Plextor CD Writers. Too bad Plextor is behind the 8 ball on DVD Recorders. They manufacturer great CD Recorders, but lousy DVD ones.
  6. Actually, if you burn onto DVD media and just the songs you want, you should be able to pack about 120 songs on a single DVD and just get CDEx to rip the entire image. The time consuming part will be burning a DVD image. Even better, if you have a Dual Layer DVD, it will pack 240 songs.
  7. If you buy one credit (1 Euro) it will allow you to call 23 differnet countries. Don't know how long it will last, but use it while you can. The best part, you can call landlines. If you don't pay the Euro, you are limited to 5 calls per day and 1 minute per call.
  8. Use Symantec Ghost, it will basically "photocopy" your existing hard drive.
  9. You don't do both, either you install thru SVCPACK.inf or not install and use the registry patch to make it appear as it is installed. add this to svcpack.inf KB873374.exe /Q:A /R:N (HALT BOX) or this to your registry tweaks REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\GdiDetectionTool" /v "GDITool" /t REG_DWORD /d "00000001" /f But you don't need to do both. It won't hurt as installing will automatically add the registry entry.
  10. Use this Registry Tweak [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{540D8A8B-1C3F-4E32-8132-530F6A502090}] @="Language bar" "MenuTextPUI"="@%SystemRoot%\\System32\\msutb.dll,-325"
  11. I will send them to you. Give me an email address
  12. Try hitting F8 when booting your machine. A menu should pop up and you can select safe mode VGA. It could be F6, I don't remember. Have you tried a different PCI card?
  13. Sure, if you want to spend the money now.
  14. You have to burn it on CD and run it from the CD. Make sure the volume label is VPSCS2 Here are the steps you need to make it work Extract the ZIP, you will find a folder called VPSCS2 Take all the contents inside the VPSCS2 and drop that into Nero. Label your CD as VPSCS2. Burn the CD. Make sure you have QuickTime or QuickTime Alternative loaded. Insert the CD and double click on VPSCS2.exe to start the tutorial.
  15. Try Dscaler http://deinterlace.sourceforge.net/downloads.htm
  16. The best version to get is 2.95. But, if you want something more current. Get 5.02, I think that was the last version before DRM.
  17. Modify this key instead. This section of the registry is used to create [HKEY_CURRENT_USER]. So it is basically a template for all future users. [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] "NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList"=dword:00000001
  18. Doesn't work. Both partitions have to be bootable.
  19. RAM is so cheap. The more the better. However, 256 is too little, if you want the bare minimum, 384 is good.
  20. Adobe is giving away a free training video for Adobe PhotoShop CS2 http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/magic/...deoworkshop.zip
  21. Wouldn't it be easier to use Nero to create an audio CD? But instead of recording to blank media, choose image recorder and save it as an .ISO. Then you can use Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120% to mount the image, use CDEx to RIP the audio back into MP3 and there will be no DRM.
  22. Have you tried disabling it in the BIOS. If it is going into hibernation during installation of XP, then it is a hardware feature. XP is not loaded yet, so it cannot be doing it.
  23. The ATI Multi Media Centre is quite good compared to others. Your problem is not the software. It is the hardware. You are probably experiencing dropped frames. The reason is ATI cards are sofware based capture cards. So it requires a lot of CPU to capture video. Even if you have a 3 GHz machine. Get a hardware based card like the Hauppauge cards. Problem will go away.
  24. A fragamented hard drive should not make a difference for your optical drive. I think it is time for a new CD ROM.
  25. The optical drives operate independantly. It is like having two hard drives. Makes no difference.
