  1. Lecco, I bet it might work, if you reduce the RAM. Try 512MB (physical if possible), then work your way up. I had similar issue with larger registry after installing .NET 2.0 (adds TON of registry). After reducing RAM, all was ok. Of course, I would like to have all my RAM back!
  2. Anyone had luck getting AbiWord 2.6 running on Win 9x/ME? I tried AbiWord 2.6.5 with KernelEx 0.3.6, but receive a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error". If KernelEx was able to make OpenOffice 3.0 work, I thought maybe there might be a trick to make AbiWord 2.6 work (?).
  3. Unfortunately, no, the JRE 6 update 11 installer does not work. The new release of JRE 5 update 17, however, does still work.
  4. If you don't mind using KernelEx, the latest release SumatraPDF seems to run fine with it. That's what I've been using.
  5. Is nvuDisp.exe from official 77.72 driver included in the updated unofficial 82.69 driver?
  6. Unfortunately this new version of Flash breaks U.B. Funkeys. My kids hate me now :-(
  7. I suppose that asking for an unofficial patch when it's still possible to pay a bazillion dollars for special support for an 'official' patch is probably not in Microsoft's best interest Maybe when that special support period ends, I'll come back and ask again.
  8. Has anyone heard/read of an unofficial NT 4.0 patch for MS08-067? Perhaps NT 4.0 is not vulnerable?
  9. Wow, that's pretty awesome seeing OOo 3 running on Win98. If that can truly be done, then I begin to wonder what the limits really are (Flash 10? Shockwave 11?). Spectacular work.
  10. For a corporate environment with primarily Windows XP/Vista PC's, I still can't find anything better than IE. Why? Group Policies. IE8 improves on IE once again in this area. If someone can point me to a centralized administration tool for Firefox that has the degree of configuration that Group Policies for IE allows for, I'm all ears.
  11. I do believe there has been mention in other forums that performance on newer cards is not as good as some of the older cards, when running older games and applications that pre-date DirectX 9.0. Plus, there is the additional issue of quality versus performance. Many older games and applications are not looking/working properly on newer cards due to removed hardware and/or software/driver support of older features (like dithering, for example).
  12. Well, it's not just DOS games actually, that WinME has problems with. DOS apps too. I have a theory that it might be possible to modify dosmgr.vxd to change the default DOS VM environment variable settings, to make more DOS apps, including games, work. My theory is based on the dosmgr.vxd patch (kb274594) that MS released for WinME. That update increased the hardcoded environment variable for FILES= to the max of 255. So, quite possibly, someone could find a way to modify dosmgr.vxd to change some of the other hardcoded environment variables, such as FCBS, BUFFERS, and STACKS (where STACKS is the one that I believe needs adjusting in order for my precious Tie Fighter Collectors CD-ROM to work).
  13. Well, there is one game I could never get to work on Windows ME, that really ticked me off and made me go back to 98SE. Tie Fighter Collector's CD-ROM. It's DOS-based, but it runs fine with the DOS from 98SE (and I don't even have to shutdown and restart in DOS mode). With Windows ME, I would always get a Stack Overflow error, no matter what I tried. Apparently this is related to how DOS on Windows ME runs in a sort of 'VM' environment and hardcodes certain environment variables to certain settings, without the ability to change them. MS KB article 274646 goes into some of the details.
  14. I'm running 9.0.47 due to problems reported of newer versions here http://www.msfn.org/board/Adobe-Flash-Play...24-t115186.html and here http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-335
  15. After applying latest updates from 7-1-2008, Internet Explorer (especially Flash plugin) is running *much* faster. I cannot explain it. Would be interesting if anyone else reports same result.
  16. I seem to recall that Win98 (any flavor) didn't support USB mouse in Safe Mode, but WinME did. [Edit: I think it depended on type of USB controller.] True/untrue?
  17. I will vouch for WinFLP's usefullness in a corporate environment. Even on newer PC's, it's wonderful, because the OS footprint is very small. This makes imaging, backups, full virus scans, etc, go much faster, because there are much less files installed. As others have said, it can really extend the usefullness/lifetime of older hardware. I'm not really sure why MS doesn't open up WinFLP to other markets (home users, small business, etc). There is a large market for breathing life into old hardware, and MS is really losing in that space.
  18. If anything, we could do what Debian had to do, and rename Firefox to something else. Or maybe we can just piggyback on the already existing "IceCat" name. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceweasel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_IceCat
  19. Your thread appears to have been deleted :'( Edit: Nevermind, I think the threads were merged.
  20. Has anyone submitted bug to Adobe? According to system req's (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/productinfo/systemreqs/#os), Windows 98/ME should still be supported. Here is bug report link: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index....&product=17
  21. It appears that the latest VLC player 0.8.6e no longer works on Windows 98. It complains about unicode support. Has anyone found a workaround, or can someone recommend another media player application that still supports Windows 98?
  22. Ok I thought maybe I was going crazy but now someone else confirms the problem on 98. Thanks!
  23. Hmm, I'm unable to reproduce this bug using the method mentioned on that ToolTipFixer page. Perhaps the bug exhibits itself under different circumstances under Win9x?
