137GB limit - ESDI_506.PDR and other limits
LLXX replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Hi, this thread hasn't gotten a bit of activity in a while, but HDDs keep getting bigger and cheaper Bumping it to announce the upcoming release of Enable48BitLBA ~ -
Version 1.1 is now available. 2006-07-13 15:19 Finished driver analysis, initial announcement 2006-07-14 10:43 Working on inserting new code 2006-07-15 09:56 First successful build 2006-07-15 22:03 Major change of plan 2006-07-20 18:10 Version 1.0 released 2006-07-21 04:51 Begin work on WinME version 2006-07-21 05:50 Finish WinME version 2006-07-21 06:22 Begin work on 4.10.2225 2006-07-21 06:37 Version 1.1 (4.10.2225) released 2006-07-22 07:34 Win98FE version (4.10.2001) released 2006-07-23 08:51 Win98FE version (4.10.2186) released 2006-07-29 20:05 Win98SE version (4.10.2226) released - only for replacing an existing v4.10.2226 file 2006-08-02 17:57 Win95 OSR2+ version (4.00.1111) released 2006-08-04 20:27 Win95 OSR2+ version (4.00.1119) released For those that don't know, this is an attempt to implement 48-bit LBA support into Windows 98se's default IDE driver, enabling the use of hard drives in excess of 128Gb. This is not just another variant of Loew's "High Capacity Disk Patch" because 1] It's completely free (and of course, has no guarantee) 2] Addressing to 2048Gb is possible (limit of FAT32) 3] A large portion of driver code has been rewritten and optimised 4] LBA-48 commands implemented in separate routines instead of "patched into" existing 28-bit's code 5] Slightly increased performance over Loew's patch due to [4] If Enable48BitLBA has worked for you, please post a link to a validation image containing the following: 1. Properties page of a drive filled past 137Gb 2. Information dialog, the results of a successful scandisk on the drive 3. System Properties -> Device Manager -> (your IDE controller) Properties -> Driver -> Driver File Details (must show ESDI_506.PDR being used) Also specify your hardware (in particular, mobo chipset and HDD specs). This will help to confirm that it works. There's always a workaround... but this is probably one of the main reasons why I'm not going to be switching to Vista.

ROFL Is that CD by any chance made by Sony? You might've gotten infected with their infamous DRM Rootkit.

How should the Win9x Power Pack be distributed?
LLXX replied to jimmsta's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Quite obviously I inspect them, but inspecting at most several MB of files is a much more pleasant task than several hundred MB. Also, self-extractors can get infected, while archives can't. They do not contain executable code that is run when the archive is opened, unlike a self-extractor. -
You're not the only one to notice that Definitely a bit flipped on the disk, right in the middle of the directory entry filename... I'd say do a backup and perform read/write testing on the drive. What an interesting coincidence indeed.

Nothing. LCDs have to readjust to the timing of the video signal for optimum performance.

Some PC2100 can actually run fine at PC2700 (22% OC) speeds.

Does an application to test memory cards exists?
LLXX replied to Francesco's topic in Software Hangout
It cannot recover. It only does a low-level format, testing for bad blocks. -

I'm rather cautious around executable files, especially huge ones since they take a long time to virusscan, so that might not be the best idea. I unpack most installers manually anyway, to minimize the risk of getting anything infectious.I recommend the CAB format. The compression is actually superior to 7zip's LZMA as pointed out above, and in addition, every 9x computer already comes with extraction utility and viewer shell extension as well -
That's not a "fix" isn't it... more like a workaround. Check to see if MaxPhysPage has gotten a value in the system.ini, and remove that line completely. The real solution is to decrease the maximum size of the file cache. See the other thread somewhere here for more information.

Last Patchday --> persuade M$ to extend support for Windows 9
LLXX replied to winxpi's topic in Windows 9x/ME
...and I'm working on a fix right now. Partially rewriting a disk driver is a lot more interesting than I expected Is it still illegal to download copies of an unsupported OS now? Or does Micro$oft just not care about 98 anymore? -
Code for RISC processors is inherently more "loose" and of a lower density, so it is not a good comparison. The Mac version of most software is often much larger than the PC version. But I wouldn't doubt it if most of the space was filled by all the graphics and icons.

The progress bar? That's when it's reading the kernel from disk. Absolutely normal.

Disable scripting, activex, and java for Internet zone. Put trusted sites in Trusted Sites zone and enable slightly only the options needed to make the sites work. Use blocking HOSTS file and Proxomitron to filter out the ads. I do the above and use IE 6.0, haven't had any problems in 5+ years with malware. However sometimes I post malware-infested links of information on forums and I'm not even aware of it, since my config blocks out so much. It's only when the others start to complain that my link "infected" them that I know there was malware there

Google "PortFree Production Program". 3.27 is the latest version. Translated description: -
It's just palette animation. Nothing extraodinary. Just do a search for boot logo and you'll find more info.

Laptop goofed.. WinXP 'Corrupted Data Structures' when booting

Never use Norton. It's noted for heavy resource consumption and inefficiency. Also, clean out the fans if you're experiencing thermally related problems. -
It's not a good idea to use Flash drives to subject to lots of reading/writing, they will wear out extremely fast.

Sound works fine but just like the network stack, it is almost 10 years old, - Audio stack has been running in Kernel mode, sound when your sound crashes you can get BSOD, the sound stack is now in user mode, sound when sound crashes, it restarts audio and that is it. -audio now can be controlled by a per application proccess, turning your sound up for Media player and down for your game or IE or any other app. - New Audio API, allows for people who write sound into apps or write drivers for sounds cards to more easily write code against to the sound stack It now also incorporates DRM features to prevent "unauthorized interception of protected audio"

Check to ensure that the processor's heatsink is still firmly attached. There have been many cases in which the heatsink loosens due to movement, causing the processor to overheat during the boot process.

The NT series have been known for their bad DOS emulators, and it seems they messed up again with Vista.
