Thanks Kiki. I have narrowed my search. Not hard, only time consuming. Because I changed so much this last time, I wasn't sure where to look first (more tweaks, a first AAO, my own icons inf, updated FDV, updated HFSLIP and HFCLEANUP). It seems that the later hfcleanup.zip sets are causing the trouble. The sets are not dated so I will refer to them from the date of the last file added/changed. I have no problems with March 12. March 29 loses mru_kill.inf, rasphone and iexpress May 11 lose all I can probably hunt down the problem but what worries me is I don't know what other FDV infs are being removed even with the March 12 set. This could be true now for everyone. I'll go through the list and post back.

I am not yet but it may save time. Does it come with an answer to bypass the AHTEST?

Good advice. I had thought of the credit thing but MrsP has this info imbedded in the cab as well.

I have typed I HAVE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS a few dozen times over the last couple of days. I have been very careful with capitals and not just relying on a return for the defaults. I even downloaded USP51 for all the latest, greatest. Hard drive seems fine. My next attempt will be a stock FDV with reductions, nothing else. You have seen the log; there shouldn't be anything there to corrupt the works. Fresh install. I never give up. The apocalyse could hit; I'll keep going...... Unless Vista gets me.

Still not fixed. Here is the updated list of files missing during install (should anyone Search to here with the same problem). Sure hate being alone. Well, total W2k install, no rollup or hotfixes but firewall. Downloaded the latest HFSLIP, FDV set, TommyP reducer set (for HFCLEANUP) and W2k extra set. I am hoping this is the one and only holdup (so I am giving this info now). Already _removed the nt5.ca BTW, I wasn't trying to insult dialup users in any way. I was curious if the dialup users actually used rasphone to do it. Microsoft apps aren't typically the preferred choice.

Got it. Did a reinstall of W2k oem (original). That didn't fix my problems. Hoping that this does.

Post has been up long enough to make me think that this is an isolated case. The last time I had quirky results (in a usually solid HFSLIP, etc) was due to the mass of crap I am constantly downloading and trying. The fix was to reinstall W2k and just retry HFSLIP. ... a Zciweisakul memory allocator for Win32, Oh I just gotta try that

MrsP_Opera_Default_Browser_Addon_v8.54.cab to Opera854.cab Just kind of wordy, don't ya think? BTW, copied fine but haven't tested it yet. Don't know about this yet- Working on another problem.....oooo can't wait to get into trouble with codecs and drivers

I see. The .cab, .in_ and entries....ini files were in a larger cab- MrsP_Opera_Default_Browser_Addon_v8.54.cab This goes in HFAAO You make it too simple. Hopefully I can rename the bugger!

Probably should mention that the W2k install pauses to ask me for a few missing files now as well. Figured that this was probably due to the new hfcleanup.zip and I would get to it later. MAPIMIG.CAT DTCSETUP.CAT FP4.CAT IMS.CAT A little reading shows Oleg removing these in December. Funny I am getting these messages now.

So simply, for a first timer, non nLiter trying out a addon from the RyanVM link: 1 extract.exe in HFTOOLS 2 PROGRAM.cab in HFAAO 3 ENTRIES_PROGRAM.INI in HFAAO 4 PROGRAM.in_ in HFSVCPACK That got it?

I had dialup at one time but I don't remember using rasphone. Probably something like Bitware. So rasphone is one of those awesome M$ apps to keep? Actually we don't even have a phone line anymore. I am using the TommyP reducer set downloaded from FDV site (hfcleanup.zip) in HFCLEANUP. Attached is the log. I'll attach wu.txt as soon as I get HFNetChk. HFSLIP.zip

Where have all the Fred files gone? (Sung to the tune of ...) It seems that (for me) FDVFILES shell.in_ is being reduced. I no longer see rasphone, mru_kill, calculator, etc. The files do end up in system32 but not their menu links (shortcuts). There are a lot of references to shell.in_ in the latest reducer set; can you give me a hint? BTW, does anybody actually use rasphone except Oleg? Seriously.

Interesting download page (@ RyanVM). I should have paid more attention when everyone was talking cab files. Could it be as simple as downloading addon packs from here and placing the cab in HFCAB and the inf in HFSVCPACK?

Thanks Kramy. I am not a huge fan of explorer.exe anyways but we must have it. If you know of a way to gut it, let me know. Until that time, I don't want to double up on apps. It's search function is fast enough for me. Kiki Burgh, I may go this way. I sure would like to be able to add back in things that I want though.
