  1. lol, another great reason why Windows 98 has a rite to live on!
  2. Thanks for the help. (boy I love this forum) Luckily I have a PS/2 keyboard and mouse. As for chipset, its a VIA TECH VT6212, PCI card.
  3. HEre's a noob question... what does removing the MRu lines from the registry do?
  4. Most web exploits come through your browser. So if you have a firewall, virus scanner and a spyware remover combined with a modern browser, Windows 9x can easily live on for a few mor years yet
  5. I managed to get it to work fine, but is there a better way?
  6. Windows recognises my PCI card fine, it just doesn't detect any of the USB devices pluged into it on startup. If I plug a device into it after Windows starts up it detects it automatically like it should. (I just had a thought. I wonder if dial booting between Win98 and Win2k has anything to do with it?) I tried putting these commands into a batch file and a shortcut but neither approach worked. Am I doing something wrong?
  7. Other than programs that require Internet Explorers upgraded shell, alot of its to do with testing. Software companies have to test each OS they list as a System Requirement. Less OS's listed, less they have to test, less money spent. A good example is Windows Media Player 9. It requires Windows 98 Second Edition or higher. I could not believe it could work on Windows 98 SE and not Windows 98 FE. So I made a change in the registry identifying Win98FE as Win98SE and guess what. It worked no problems at all! I then tried the same trick on Windows 95 (with IE 5.5 installed). It also worked without a problem. So some times companies deliberately cripple OS support just to: 1. make you upgrade 2. to save them the time and expense of offering compatability status Just annoys me when companies disable OS's for the sake of saving them testing. For non critical software companies should just list it as unsupported and allow users to take the decision themselves if they wish to use the software on a unsupported system.
  8. Try this link http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html
  9. I asked on the Opera forum about Win9x support in future versions and an Opera stadd member replied: Lets hope it says that way for alittle while longer
  10. I also use AVG and find it good.
  11. If I plug a usb device in AFTER Windows boots, it autodetects the usb device. If I have a usb device plugged in BEFORE windows boots, it doesn't detect the device. I then have to right click on My Computer, go to Device Manager and Click Refresh, and OK. Then it detects any USB items I have connected. Is there a quicker/easier way of refreshing System Devices in Win9x? I have a USB modem that Windows 98 doesn't autodetect on startup and am sick of having to go trawling through menus to enable it. So can I make a desktop shortcut that will refresh my System Devices (maybe better still I could put it in my Startup folder?) P.S. I have a PCI USB2 card.
  12. From my understanding, Firefox 2 will support Win9x but still uses Gecko 1.8 meaning it WONT pass the Acid2 test. Firefox 3 will use Gecko 1.9 and should pass Acid2 but WONT run on Win9x. Therefor as it stands, it seems Opera will be the last (major) browser for Win9x that passes Acid2. As for future Opera versions still supporting Win9x, I have no idea. Have searched around but haven't found an Opera roadmap yet. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. (For the noobs Gecko is the rendering engine that allows Firefox to display the web pages you browse)
  13. I downloaded Opera latest web browser today if an effort to find a future replacement for Firefox (Mozilla will drop Win9x support in Firefox next year). Opera 9 Finally Opera have developed a browser that is quick as they claim, no longers stutters its way through rendering complex pages, is free and best of all it still works on Win9x systems That mean's Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Millenium systems ARE supported! So now we have an up-to-date browser that (DRUM ROLLL PLEASE) passes the ACID2 test! http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html Acid2 is a well recognised test to show if your web browser supports the latest web and CSS standards. Opera 9 passes it! (Firefox 1.5 and Internet Explorer currently don't pass Acid2) I'm smiling from ear to ear. Win9x lives on! Still fully compliant with the web standards 13 years after its (first seen in Windows 95) launch! So I urge Windows 95/98/ME users to give Opera 9 a try. We need to support organisations that are willing to continue to support us, and in the meanwhile give Mozilla a wake up call. Maybe if enough of us show we are willing to ditch Mozilla Firefox, they will re-think their decision to drop support for Win9x systems next year with Firefox 3 (Geko 1.9) For more information on Opera 9 go to http://www.opera.com
  14. Because of this wholr issue, I re-gave Opera 8.5 a chance. Didn't last long. Went back to Firefox. But what good timing, Opera 9 has been launched. And it runs **** fine on Windows 9x systems Successfull companies go to great measures to retain marketshare. Mozilla better becareful. The competitors are lurking in the shadows ready to snap up the unwanted.
  15. Sorry my bad! P.S. I use Firefox and Opera but I still have IE6 SP1 loaded and want to ensure its locked down best it can be (without removal).
  16. I am one to mess around with my PC quite alot. But I did a search for "tape" in my registry and it didn't reveal many entries. That's why I asked. The removal of "url" addresses is a great tip though. Thanks.
  17. Sorry I should have been more specific. Prior to my last post I had just spent some time reading Mozillazine and Forums. The official Firefox 2 will be based on Gecko 1.8. And WILL run on Windows 98/me systems. But..... what I was getting at was, maybe it would be better to start a Win9x project on keeping Firefox 2 alive (after mozilla launch Firefox 3) into the future for Win9x rather than 3. They are asking for volunteers to make a Win9x branch for Firefox 3, but I think I'd rather we try and port Gecko 1.9 and all security fixes into a special Firefox 2 realease as it will have less bloatware (features we don't need). Thoughts?
  18. I remember reading its possible to modify Windows 2000 update patches to fix Windows 98 (for some patches). My main thought was we know Microsoft will not release updates for Internet Explorer 6 SP1 on Windows 98 anymore. But they will release the updates for IE6 SP1 on Windows 2000. And we all know IE is the biggest weakness in Windows 98. So can we make our own patches for IE on Windows 98 using Windows 2000 updates?
  19. Would be great if we got a project going keeping alive Firefox on Windows 98. I can understand why Mozilla would want to drop Win9x support from FF3 but it might be for the best anyway. As windows 98 users we hate bloat (Am I right! ) and the last thing we need is a bloated browser. So maybe if we could keep Firefox 2 going, with the Gecko 1.9 engine, we could have a standards compliant browser with less bloat and features we don't need. Just a thought
  20. I'm keen on learning more about this. Where and how do you find what registry keys to delete?
  21. Mate, I have to thank you! not only does this usb driver allow Windows 98 SE to detect most of my usb thumbdrives it has now over achieved. It allowed Windows 98SE to detect my SonyEricsson w800i memory stick I can now add and delete mp3's to my w800i through windows 98SE usb connection! 1st I had to install Sony Ericsson's USB driver then your USB driver! You little ripper!
  22. Thanks MDGx for your work in keeping Windows 98 alive Cheers mate!
  23. Pentium Pro 200MHz 256 MB EDO RAM 3.8 GB Hard Drive Creative DVD Drive Richoh CD RW/DVD Combo 3dfx Voodoo 4 32MB PCI Creative MPEG2 PCI Card Skymaster USB 2.0 4+1 PCI Card Ensoniq Soundscape ISA Sound Card and it still rocks!
  24. I have a huge collection of USB thumbdrives that all require different drivers to work on Windows 98 SE. I have successfully installed NUSB and thats fine, but I was just wondering, is there any way of updating Windows 98SE so it behaves like Windows ME (ie. use its native drivers?) I am currently trialling ME2SE but I would just like to be able to add ME's USB support without all the other updates to Windows 98SE? Has or Does anyone know how to do this, or what files I would need to copy from ME to achieve this? Thanks for keeping Windows 98SE alive!
  25. I used the guide located at http://aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.php to get my Pentium 4 with 1.5GB of RAM to run Windows 98SE (it required me to disable my 512MB of my RAM, basically only making 1GB available to Windows 98)
