Hi, I am currently working in a mixed mode enviornment with 2k3, 2k and NT servers. For some reason one of my DHCP servers on one subnet does not like to give a default gateway to my NT clients, forcing me to set the IP information static. I have researched microsoft in and out with this problem, and have determined its not a client side issue since I can take an NT machine to another subnet with a different DHCP server and get the gateway. I was wondering if anyone knows about some setting in the DHCP server that would allow/disallow the server to give out the gateway to the NT machines? I'm sure I'm just missing a radio button somewhere. Thanks for your time!

Is this happening when they hit enter after typing in their password? When did this start happening, and can you recall any changes made, or updates installed? check the update log and compare it with a client that isn't having these issues

I had this problem on my company network when we installed our SAN system. All of my users were unable to see random directories in the share, and it would always be different for every person. (Files would not show either) -- We actually had to get microsoft involved and they provided a private patch that resolved our issue. KB896427-v2 to be exact. See if you can get ahold of that, it may help with your problem.

Thank you for taking the time to help me with this: the files are located on a windows 2003 server. Not too many other people synchronize, and this looks more like a confusion with nic cards.....This morning I obtained access to the users account for only a few hours to try and resolve this problem. I was able to disable the NIC on the laptop, and so far it looks like everything is okay. The problem is that this issue is so sporadic, It would be hard to tell without putting it in production. The only thing I can sit here and do is click through his folders hoping the error will pop up again. I previously had the NIC to be turned on 24/7 and was getting the error message. I will keep trying to reproduce the error with the laptop NIC disabled.

This is a dell D610 laptop by the way....I've checked the power settings for the NIC, they were set to default which is When the laptop is not plugged in, the NIC is disabled, but when it is plugged in its enabled. Now, Are you recommending that I completly disable this NIC since its using the NIC on the docking station?? Could this be where its getting confused? OR should I set it to remain "ON" no matter if the laptop is plugged in or not.

I used to work for a bank while they were doing their conversion from Novell queue's to IP based printing....They were about 26,000 employee's large and it was one heck of a job. (Took over a year) I can tell you that the reason they went ip based is because its so easy to manage and troubleshoot, you literally can't go wrong! Plus the fact that Novell is not as widely used eliminates support possibilities. This is definately a matter in which pro's will outweigh con's in almost any enviornment.

Okay, (sorry, meant to add [HELP] to this topic....) I have a client who has synchronization setup on his laptop. He is synchronizing about 5GB of data over our network. We completed a network upgrade from static to DHCP a couple of months ago, and his PC has had problems ever since. Because of the problems, I built a new laptop for him from scratch, but now he's still getting some of the same errors as before... I completed a full synchronization before I left his office, and verified the data was available offline before I left. Not too long after, While connected to the network, he stated he was getting errors that read "H:\data\data" (H: being his home drive) refers top a location that is unavailable. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location. Now, he is able to continuously click on the folder (and click ok for the error message, sometimes 3-6 times more) before it finally openes up for him. The kicker is, when I pull the laptop offline and start browsing his offline files, these errors no longer occur. So this is only happening when he is connected to the network. I'm wondering if there is something not configured correctly in synchronization? I'm really stuck here as I've gone as far as to building a completly new machine for him, but only get the same results. I'm thinking hard about it now, and I'm wondering if him pulling the laptop offline, and then putting it back online without logging out or anything would have something to do with this. I'm not sure if he's done this or not. (i.e, the PC is confused as to which version to look at, the one on the network or the one on the local machine) ******************* ---update ----- I spoke with the client and he stated that when he is pulling his machine offline, he is completly shutting down the machine, undocking it, and then turning it back on to access his files offline....He turns the machine off to go back onto the network also....So correct me if I'm wrong, windows should be picking up that there is a drive mapped to a network location, and it should be using that copy first. It doesn't really make a difference where you store the files. Best practice is to create a seperate partition to store files, just in case your C drive becomes corrupted, or one day you can't boot into windows. (This is almost inevitable! You're data will be safer from corruption by being stored off the system partition. As for servers, most people would say never store any data on the C drive. The C drive should be designated as a boot partition only.

It sounds to me like there is something wrong with your hard drive...If it took 2 hours to install, and everything seems to be working fine, your hard drive might be getting ready to go bad. Pay attention to the sounds it makes when you turn the system on, and when its accessing data. If it seems loud to you, it might be going bad....Also, you may have something configured in your bios thats causing it to crawl like that...although this is not likely, i would try restoring your defaults if you've made any changes (ie. overclock memory, ect)

I am probably going to have to manually edit each machine to enable AU. I would like to make a script, but I need something that only I would have to run as I don't want any users running logon scripts that contain admin credentials to install the registry settings. Is there a way I can make a script that will remotely add these settings to the PC's that I tell it to?

I am currently supporting a mixed enviornment of NT, 2k and XP PC's. I would like to setup the XP machines to be configured for automatic updating for now (untill we get AD in place and functioning fully) but I have to accomplish this without going to each machine and configuring them manually. We are in a domain but are currently not using AD, and won't be for awhile. My question is, is there a way I can configure all the XP machines to be set for automatic updating either by using a script or something? Also, if I were to configure active directory to set all machines to have automatic updating, is this going to have any effect on the 2k or NT machines? This is very possible. You can configure security options for internet explorer to only allow certain websites. You can set this up so that you only allow *.gov and *.org domains. This is done under the Security * Security Zones and Content Rating portion of your GP. Go to user config>windows settings>internet explorer maintnance and you will see security there. Enjoy!

Why would you need to install the latest IE? If anything I would rather have IE 5.0 installed because I know its a solid program that has been around for a long time, and its not going to crash on me when I view a website. You are only asking for trouble wanting to upgrade a peice of software that new, especailly if its your internet browser. My suggestion to you is: Go with Firefox, once you convert you'll never want to go back.

I've been using NOD32 since I installed my x64 and I have no complaints about it. If you are looking for a good alternative to sav10 then this is your cake!

I'm trying to repackage this because i want to be able to deploy it using GP. I know Active directory supports several other install types, but i read msi is the best to use. Ive tried capturing a diff with win install LE, but for some reason its not fixing the issue. (The MSI creates fine, installs fine, but the actually hotfix is not effective)

QUICK UPDATE: I found out the problem, although I need some help trying to pinpoint it. Eventvwr reveals: Windows saved user (domain/username) registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account. now my question is: does anyone know how I can find out what service or application is causing this??? Hello, I recently completed a network upgrade for my company. We changed some IP addresses, and implimented DHCP on another segment. For some reason now, I have a few laptops that seem to hang when you logout of them. (It goes to a blank background, and it sits there atleast 5 mintues before you will see "closing network connections" dialog box pop up.) This INCLUDES the local administrator account. This is only laptops, and I want to say that there is some sort of record still pointing to an old network address that is causing this to hang. I've installed and ran uphclean, but this does absolutly nothing for me. I've verified that no drives are attempting to connect/disconnect, (that I can physically see) I've flushed the dns several times, and I still have no luck. Why gets me the most is the fact that this is happening for any person who logs in, including local accounts. anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this hangup?

Thank you for taking the time to read over my issue and try and help. i tested wise packaging and was unable to figure out how to get it packaged to launch the patch.exe with the switches. this was the same for wininstall LE...Maybe someone can tell me how to get this patch to launch once i add it to the package? Also, is there a way i can have this patch install using the local admin account (without creating a revealing script) by somehow adding that to the package? I basically need to find a good enough prog to do this, and maybe someone out there who can help me get a grasp on the program itself. Regards

Hello All, I'm having some issues with my XP laptops. When a user logs out, it takes 3-6 mins to complete the logout. This includes the local admin account as well. I'm almost positive this issue is occuring because something in the default user profile, or all users profile is causing this to hang. When I built the image for the laptops, i may have replaced one of these profiles with a profile so that users could have identical backgrounds and Icons. Can someone tell me what may be going on?? Also, if i want to have a default background for all users, how would i go about doing that? I've tried creating profiles and then replaced the all users profile but this doesn't seem to work. Hello all, I'm really in need of help, as I've spent countless hours trying to get this done and I feel that i've gotten no where. We were released a private hotfix from microsoft because our sp2 xp clients couldn't view our SAN. I need to create an MSI to deploy this hotfix, using a /passive /promptrestart switch. Sounds simple. I've gone through almost every program out there trying to figure out how to build this, and I can't figure it out. I attempted to use wininstal le that comes with windows, and it did not install the hotfix correctly. (the patch ran, but it did not correct the issue) Many people are telling me to use Wininstall LE, but I cant figure out how to get it so that it will launch the hotfix when the MSI runs, or better yet even add the switches. I' m hoping someone here can maybe guide me through building this or tell me what I need to do in win install le to have it launch the file and install using switches. I will be using GP to deploy the MSI through AD. Again, I want the MSI to launch an exe with /passive and /promptrestart switches, and thats basically it. I believe since I'm using GPO to deploy, I wont need to install using an admin account since the system account will be initiating the install. Anyone can confirm this please.
