  1. You can download SP2 once and for all, and RyanVM's last version of "Post SP2 update pack" and integrate them all in a new CD, using nLite for instance. It is very easy if you are ready to spend one more hour on it. Exploring all the options in nLite is not mandatory.
  2. Idle : not occupied or employed: as a : having no employment : INACTIVE <idle workers> b : not turned to normal or appropriate use
  3. I think noone understands your question so I won't pretend I did. From Windows, typing chkdsk c: -r in a DOS box does not bring any GUI (are you talking about the one like scandisk's Win9x and before had ???)
  4. "Administrator" is a built in account, you did not create it, XP installation comes with it. You can change its name after installation but most people don't bother. Wether SAM which is the account you created has the adminisrator's rights is an other concept, but understand that SAM is not the administrator account. In MS's view, people are not supposed to use the Adminisrator account as a normal user's account but only for computer administration, that's why they let you create a new account during installation. That first account does have administrative rights. A 3rd problem is taking ownership of the files that were created before the reinstallation as I guess most your problems come from that. Did you do it yet or did you just read the article and get stuck (this is not very clear from your post) ? Do you mean they did not appear in "My Documents" or you could not open your files ?

    Lost in Guide

The title says it pretty much. You are supposed to point to the service pack executable file. Depending on what you start from, you might want to include SP2 (or SP4 for Win2k) in your cd. There is a long way to go.
  6. Even if you reinstalled XP without formating, you don't lose your data but you still have to reinstall most programs. You should have got the CDs with the laptop. There is no way around this.
  7. It seems your multiboot sysem gets confused when the USB stick takes a drive letter.
  8. Like taking IE out of Windows ? Since more than 10 years, MS programmers swear it's impossible.
  9. The same way you do with a standard XP install disk. As Nuhi wrote, there is no nLite option that allows automatic partitioning/formatting.
  10. You got to love it. A guy registers exclusively to contradict the will of a Super Moderator on a thread from 2 weeks ago. This almost beats Zhoulengbo on this thread. Or is it just spam ?
  11. Do you get "This computer is in use and has been locked...." or the normal logon screen ? If the first case, just uncheck the "password protect" box in the screen saver options (or modfify settings according to your choice). This is in Control Panel, Display. If you are really logged off, ... ??? Must be in the Power Options.
  12. Do a search for "smallest", you'll come up with a few threads.
  13. You slipstream the updates at the point where the program asks you if you want to slipstream updates. They are then slipstreamed. Excuse me but you don't seem to have searched very hard before posting nor even started the program.
  14. Does work now indeed.
  15. Thanks. I thought so. I changed the cardridges of a Dell 720 printer and the unofficial Win98 drivers do not allow prinheads alignement. So I aligned them with an XP portable. Now the cardridges are unofficial aswell. B)
  16. bad link ? 2.15 was the last "freeware" version, next, I think, were shareware or evaluation versions.
  17. Are you starting all the process with an XP made by Compaq ?

    hello and help

Try resetting the resolution and the fonts size (in the "Appearance" pane). Change them, then back to normal again.
  19. read at least the 1st post ! He has an install CD (->ROM) and an empty partition. Where's the boot.ini ?
  20. At that point, you should set the PC (option to be found in BIOS, interrupting normal startup) to boot from Hard Disk Drive. An other way is to set it to boot from HDD and use the "F12 boot choice" to boot from CD only the 1st time. Don't hesitate to ask for more info.
  21. Does aligning a deskjet printer's heads stay in the machine or stay as a parameter in the computer's drivers ? In other words, can I align the printheads with a PC and use the "tweaked" printer with a other one ?
  22. If your laptop is fairly new, you probably need to load the drivers for a Sata disk when prompted at the beginning of the install ("Press F6...").
  23. This has to be the best first post ever.
  24. As already stated, this should not be the case for the desktop. A good desktop should only contain shortcuts. Aside from that, I would tend to think it is downloaded every time the user logs on as every object does appear on the screen, so there is no purpose to the operation causing your problem. I guess the solution is not far.
  25. Precision 490 ? see this this, the Serial ATA drivers are 2/3 of the page.
