  1. Oh wow you took my rock away! just kidding you can actually test your system restore now. Create a restore point, install a program then restore it back. It worked for me. Glad you got it working.
  2. All credit goes to dencorso, without him patching the vxd file, we would not be running system restore on Win98SE. Thanks dencorso.
  3. Installing 290700usam.exe is the last step. Extract it, because it is a WinME file. Some people don't have KernelEX so you will get an error. No you don't need KernelEx. No you don't need to put the 290700up.inf anywhere. Just run it where ever you extracted it. After you followed all the above instructions you shouldn't have any problems.
  4. Yes that the right version. I mean extract 290700usam.exe and inside it is 290700up.inf because it is for WinME not win98.
  5. OK duffy98, I have receive those errors you were talking about. I don't remember them in the past when I installed or maybe I just ignored them. It is a setting in the PChealth.inf that ask for the checksr.bat + ebdundo.exe. Extract the 2 files checksr.bat + ebdundo.exe from Base2.cab. Put them somewhere so when its searches point to them. Now run the C:\windows\rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection PCHealth.Install 132 C:\WINDOWS\INF\PCHealth.inf. When the first error comes up press ok, not the skip file option. When its almost done towards the end it will ask for checksr.bat + ebdundo.exe point to the files. It will install only if you press ok. Then replace the Vxdmon.vxd file. Then install 290700usam.exe, extract the file first and run the 290700up.inf. Restart computer. The navigate to the start button Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore and now you are good to go.
  6. First of all after you have to get pass that missing files error. I have never got that error. After that, once installed correctly you run a system restore point from the start menu programs. There is no way system restore will work without 290700usam.exe. I really hope you get it working. You have to extract 290700usam.exe with 7zip or something because this is an actual WinME file. And then run the inf file.
  7. Yes, make sure you use the 290700usam.exe or else it won't work.
  8. You must install every first and the 290700usam.exe You must have a WinME cd because it has all the files. Then check your shortcut menu. Should be somewhere in there.
  9. I don't have the time to go through them all. Some of them are included in the Update Rollup 1 (891861): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861 (scroll down to "Fixes that are included in Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4") Perhaps if you have time, you can edit your post to mark those that are included. I'm still updating the 2000 Updates page when I have spare time. Aside from any corrections and additions that will need to be made to the page, I'd ask you to take the updates listed there as a more or less definitive list. I understand, I'm pretty busy during the week myself. Do you know how to create a bat file to extract them all at once instead of running them from cmd prompt? P.S. WINDOWS2000-KB942831-X86-ENU.EXE has newer than any other infocomm.dll 5.0.2195.7147 WINDOWS2000-KB816868-X86-ENU.EXE has newer than any other wininet.dll 5.0.3900.6944
  10. How can you say they aren't? I also would like to check if any of my hotfixes (in HF\ subdir) are actually slipstreamed but I don't know how. Maybe I can make HF\ subdir lighter... Because if you try to slipstream WINDOWS2000-KB816868-X86-ENU.EXE for instance, which has a newer version of wininet.dll 5.0.3900.6944. Thats how I know. It does not slipstream. I know a lot of the other files are newer too, because they are hotfix request. bristols When you have some time can you tell me which of these are obsolete. When I put these files in the HFSVCPACK_SW1 for some reason the older files replaces the newer files. 11. I have applied all WildBill patches to Windows 2000 Server and all is fine.
  12. copy PCHealth.inf from your WinME cd to C:\Windows\inf Run this command C:\windows\rundll.exe setupx.dll,InstallHinfSection PCHealth.Install 132 C:\WINDOWS\INF\PCHealth.inf and then replace the patched vxdmon file, then intall 290700usam.exe and you are good to go. The VXD patch is from dencorso he used his downgrade technique and thats how I got it working.
  13. True but its also works on Win98SE.
  14. It works on 98SE too!
  15. I have removed these files from my HF folder because they don't install. The reason being the file versions are older or HFSLIP don't want to slipstream them. I believe its because of the files being older. I'm not a 100% sure. 16. You probably never will. People tend to lose interest over the years, move on to other things, whatever the case may be. I don't understand why there are so many packs that serves the same purpose. Then these packs get outdated or full of bugs and now we are .......... Why not have 3 main packs with optional features with No 3rd party software 1. System files/apps only (reg tweaks sys performance etc...) 2. IE 6 all updates/outlook express 3. Mdac, Dotnetfx, etc... each pack can be downloaded separate and only applied as needed.
  17. @ bristols Thanks for your time, keeping us up to date with 2000 pro/server.
  18. How can I tell if its oem? The hard drive is dead and the guy I bought it from was from craigslist. I have no way of knowing if its retail or oem untill I get a disk. All I have is the product key. You're a bit confusing about what you bought an what's dead. Common sense tells me you bought a Dell C600 from "the guy from craiglist" which HDD is dead and an other HDD from "the guy that had a C610" with now Vista or 7 on it. Your Dell probably has a sticker that says what version of XP it was sold with. I believe you did buy that licence with the hardware because the licence is tied to the hardware. Your best move now is to borrow from a friend (or buy from eBay) an XP cd, same version (Home or Pro, OEM or retail, probably OEM) either generic MS (using the key on your sticker) or Dell branded (using the generic Dell key that will be included in the CD). The problem in your case is that (I'm no lawyer) the computer is sold with a licence AND the licence "comes" with the cd which can only be copied for personal backup. So the deal should have been clear at the sell, if he sold you the licence (thus including cd) or not. I think you got more than 51% of that licence. I was sold the hard drive, screen and memory. I don't understand I got mostly everything from the computer except the cpu, motherboard cd-rom drive. Most of the part that I have on my dell c600 is from the C610. So am I good to go. I didn't mention the other parts because I didn't think it was relevant. P.S. The dell c600 I already had but when my screen got cracked I bought the screen and other parts from the guy on craigslist. I didn't bother to ask if the key was OEM or Retail. Heres the link about my cracked screen

  20. I bought a hard drive for my laptop C600 from a guy who had a C610 because his motherboard went out. The harddrive had WinXP pro on there along with a legit product key from dell. That hard drive has lost its life. I still have a copy of the key but no disk. How can I go about using WinXP Pro. I believe he's not using the key because he upgraded to vista or 7 which ever.
  21. No need to updated from 583 to 585. You are right the only thing changed was languages.
  22. It will crash unless you replace the SysSafe.exe 2.0.8.585 with 2.0.8.583
  23. No newer versions won't work with kernelEX because you need files like userenv.dll and other NT files, but version System Safety Monitor 2.0.8.585 will work if you replace SysSafe.exe 2.0.8.585 with 2.0.8.583. There is only a slight speed improvement and maybe a little more resource usage. But of course I had my firewall running in the background. You should give it a go. P.S I change the version of 2.0.8.583 to 2.0.8.585 with resource hacker and all is fine.
  24. System Safety Monitor Free Edition 2.0 Build 585 Bugs fixed: * ESET SysInspector driver compatibility problems (BSOD); Build 584 What's new: * added Windows 2003 Sever SP2 support; * several language updates. Build 583 What's new: * added tree-view in process monitor; * several language updates. Bugs fixed: * registry browser status bar shows misplaced value; * services Module: option "Alert on config change" won't persist; * GUI performance optimization; * "Locate" command (Application Activity dialogs, Process Monitor and Rules tab) now uses the default system shell; * minor GUI bugs.
