I was able to reproduce the error on a clean install. Not sure what causes it but I'm looking into it ATM. Thanks Edit: Misinformation

I guess my solution wasn't ideal. I just bricked a 120GB HD. Way to go HUH I think the drive is pretty much dead. I put it in another computer, downloaded tools, chkdsk etc....... I even use jaclaz MBRFIX.CMD with WIZAPP.EXE. I got NOTHING!!!!!!! WinXP won't install at all. I have another 120GB HD, but I wouldn't dare do the same procedure I have just done. Looks like I'm going to have to install Win98 first.

Here's what I need you to do. 1. Install Win98 on a clean install. 2. Install all your drivers. 3. Install SP3.4. 4. Follow the instructions for USB 2.0. 5. Report back to the forum. Thanks you

Do Microsoft have some type of snapshot tool. If so, I can include it to take a snapshot before installation. It will probably slow down installation etc.... Unless there is a better way, I have no ideas

lets hope one of these batch Gurus are watching. I don't mind trying make SP simple as possible. Thanks again Drugwash

Another solution to using the SP is to add a higher version number to EXPLORER.EXE + SHELL32.DLL, so anytime you install a new version of the SP it won't replace your lovely icons. This is the best way to have your cake and eat it too.

Thanks for the links, but it is already included in the main updates in SP3.x. This is probably why others haven't witnessed it. What do you suggest?
-
What options did you check? This might help.

I do appreciate your testing. I will do my best to find a solution for you. Please list your hardware specs so I can research it. Sorry if I'm aggressive, but thats my character. I don't mean to be a PROBLEM although I am a CHYLD. Thank you!

As I said, you are the only one reporting slower boot time and hard drive thrashing. I have read every single post in the SP3 thread. I have not seen the complaints or issues. If they have occured in the past, they would have been fix by now. I have even fix the few bugs that was in 98 SE SP 3.0 BETA 4. I do this sh!+ for the love. If you have a problem I will fix it. If myself or others can't reproduce the problems then its on you.
-
I don't have any hard thrashing. You are the first to report this. Maybe someone can look into this. It might be hardware problem.

If even this is not acceptable along your (IMNSHO senseless) restrictions, then yes, you are stuck . jaclaz Please wait to lose (ALL) of your patience only after I get the solution . You did lose me for a second. I don't understand how editing BOOT.INI will help me copy the drive. I'm sorry but I just don't understand. If you want, I will fight with you later

I think I may have a better way. I have a StarTech USB to SATA and IDE adapter. If I install WinXP on the IDE drive and remove it from the laptop, then connect it to another laptop along with the 120gb SATA drive using my StarTech USB to SATA and IDE adapter. Can it be done this way? Please list instructions if possible.

Exactly 120 GB There will be two drives, on the 40gb Win98 and on the 120gb WinXP. No, I have to remove the CD rom caddy in order to run the SATA caddy with XP on the partition. Win98 will be the Primary/Master, WinXP will be the Secondary/Slave. I would like to install WinXP first on the SATA and then Win98. The only way to do that is, to install it on the 40gb from the CD and then clone/image/ghost etc.... to the 120gb.

I want to install WinXP on the C drive from a CD. Once it has been updated, I will remove the CD rom caddy and add a SATA HD caddy with an IDE interface. I want to copy/clone/image whatever etc....... from the C drive to the D drive. I doNOT want to install any 3rd party apps to accomplish this. Thanks

Thanks Here what I'm doing. I want to install WinXP on and 40gb IDE hard drive. After fully updated with patches and software, I want to move it to a sata hard drive (caddy) with a IDE interface. I hate to install software and only have to use it once. I will do this procedure with a couple of SATA drives, so all I have to do is change the HD thats in the caddy.
