Back to your first question though: is winimgit a sector or file based imaging utility? Can you create the partition ahead of time and the image into an existing partition? Or does it only restore the image as it existed on the original machine, so if it came off of a 10gb drive when it goes down on a 40gb drive it only uses 10gb and you have to extend it? You might be able to use WMI to query the drive geometry and then use that information to extend the partition.

what os are you deploying your image from? PE, dos, other? different solutions for different os.

version of diskpart maybe? Here is the script I use, creates a primary partition the full size of the drive and formats ntfs.

if you use the format command within diskpart it has a /quick switch to quick format the drive. If you are creating just a single partition on the drive you do not need to specify a size for the Primary partition it will by default create a partition the size of the available disk space if no size switch is supplied.

Just removing the machine from the domain and putting it into the workgroup will break the user accounts. The domain account profiles stored on the machine will not be accessible. If you want to use the domain profiles with local accounts create the local account but don't log in with it and then use the profilemove utility form microsoft or PROFWIZ to associate the domain profile with the new local account. Then remove the machine from the domain and put it into a workgroup.

What are you using to partition the hard drive? Most utilities will create a partition to the full size of the drive without having to do anything.

Are you wanting to automate the install of windows updates to a running OS? If so right click My Computer, select the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic then your desire day and time for them to be installed. If that is not what you are after then we need a little more explanation.

Your problem likely has to do with the amount of memory assigned to your VM. PE2 will boot and run on 256mb but it is much happier with 512. Even diskpart will not run correctly unless you have 384mb or more. At least not without making significant reductions and changes to PE.
