are you sure its system.dat & user.dat Dos is saying that thse files don't exist DOH! "revpack" is where they were backed up to when installed; when you uninstalled they "disappeared"... (@Tihiy - sorry, misunderstood...) looks like you have more serious problems... post this in Revolutions Pack topic. "Explorer.exe", "user.exe", and "user32.dll" are (i think) related and you may need to extract these from you W98 cab files (in DOS)...
-
Don't launch the command from the "c:\"; winrar is assuming that is the location to extract to. cause a "cd" (change directory) to the directory you want it extracted to. the batch command you are using are, in essence, - extracting the files one-by-one from the root of the iso - following the path of each folder (level-by-level) extracting as per the previous %0 is the directory wher the batch file is being executed. %%f and %%d are variables (f=file, d=directory respectively). "cd.." changes to the next higher directory level. Just try as I suggested. HTH

Don't you mean "sysbckup" and not "revbckup"? Also system.dat and user.dat are within RBnnn.CAB, so booting to Command Prompt and running "c:\windows\command\scanreg /restore" and selecting a good (before being hosed) date/time is the correct procedure, correct? And a generic "copy" ("move") of backup files into both folders may cause later confusion... The stated problem (how did you do System Restore in Win98, btw?) is more likely an "unofficial" Explorer.exe/User32.dll "update" mismatch... What did you do/change to cause this (just prior to failure)?

Maximus-Decim Native USB Drivers
submix8c replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
_NUSB.INF in English version - ;Localizable strings Lang = "RU" LocaleID = "UPD" UpdName = "Windows 98 Second Edition Q242975 Update" AdvPackWarn = "You need a newer version of advpack.dll." SrcDiskName = "Native USB-flashdisk for Windows 98 3.3 Eng include 242975"Note the "Lang" value... (?) By-the-by, Result after installing 98SE using UBCD (latest) without NUSB3.1 (version currently used in UBCD), then installing NUSB3.3 (after above correction to "EN") - - correctly does NOT overlay pre-existing components also in NUSB (UBCD versions newer) - DOES cause EXPLORER.EXE Icons on desktop to change to older EXPLORER.EXE of NUSB - deleting ShellIconCache or using TweakUI to Repair Explorer Desktop Icons corrects this So, is this just an ideosyncracy of just "attempting to overlay" as found in "_NUSB.INF"? (I don't know how the INF/QFECheck stuff would prevent inadvertant overlay of newer modules but screw up icons.) Any ideas? Also noted install places all files in OPTIONS\CABS... Rationale? Some official/unofficial in UBCD don't do this, eg Unofficial Q891711 (User.exe/User32.dll) and Unofficial ExplorUp (EXPLORER.EXE). And if they did, would it "hose" anything? Sigh... so confused! -
Evanhoe (better late than never...) - UBCD has already been simplified. Just copy Win98 Install folder to the UBCD folder and burn per instructions. Boot to the CD and install (have your key ready); select "Customize MSBATCH" first. After first install (a "test install", if you will), just copy the generated MSBATCH.INF back to the UBCD folder containing the copied Win98 Install folder and re-burn. Done! (simplified instructions; read docs first for details) Cheers, and glad u got it sorted, at least!

hey, all : Interesting reading... Has anyone gone to the UBCD for Win98SE thread? http://www.msfn.org/board/Unattended-Boot-...-46-t88008.html There is a wealth of information on booting/installing/reinstalling, including using multiple CD-Roms/CD-RW-s/DVD-Roms/DVD-RW-s. Multiple CD/DVD's and Booting (floppy or CD, including SCSI) should not be a problem. Soporific (and myself/others as a tester/analyst/solution-finder) have already been through this madness... Go look around and give some credit to Soporific if you find anything useful (MDGx also provided a wealth of info directly to soporific). Cheers!

Uh-uh!!! Even stranger, in both Win98SE and W2K3 using IE6SP1 (all patches/hotfixes), I first clear ALL cache, cookies, and history. When I go to MSFN main page, go to Sign-on screen, enter my Uid/Pwd, ("remember me/anonymous"), I get the Sign-on screen AGAIN but I am signed on!!! I wind up clicking on "Home" to get myself properly going (which BTW opens a new Explorer screen, at which time I EXIT the offending Sign-on screen). So are you sure there isn't some kind of bug that's been introduced??? edit - "problem" gone(?).

Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)
submix8c replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Precisely why a disk of useful tools should be a separate project.Go here -http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...105936&st=0 It is being bandied about to make this an installation project. The topic has been "stickified"; right now it is basically a list of the last-that-works-on-Win98SE software... The song says "ya gotta keep 'em separated"... A full collection of this type of stuff (utilizing perhaps WPI for selective installs) would be a handy tools/add-on disk for the techie-types that have to repair old PC's... but make post suggestions over there in that topic instead... (edit for clarification as to "where to work on / suggest optionals"; UBCD already includes WPI for many optionals...) @soporific - Have noticed a lot of threads/posts regarding "questionable unofficial patches". A lot of work to installation procedures, but a suggestion - segregate official from unofficial. You don't want unofficial? Install all MS patches and be quiet! you want unoffical and more? Pick and choose and also be quiet! Might make this project more appealing to any nay-sayers. Your call... (p.s. newer NUSB available) -
there is and will be no definitive answer... gape's SP3 is probably all good; soporific's UBCD and/or autopatcher is also all good; mdgx's stuff is all good; rp7 is all good; (etc etc). these folks (among others) have a tendency to collaberate and use each others' fixes (official and unofficial). soporific has a "definitive patch list" based upon information gathered form various sources. best answer is - compare between all resources and see if anything is left out... just be aware that there will possibly be bugs in any one or all of them (maybe not). just check around with the particular topic and ask relevant questions. p.s. MS does not provide any more updates... anything beyond what was provided will absolutely be "unofficial" (not sanctioned) by MS or anyone else but the providers/users of said fixes. only "support for updates/upgrades" will be via what you choose to utilize provided by the author.
-
A rather generic question... what are your needs/requirements for the "child/grandchild" pc? there are a lot of patch methods and optional components (both unofficial and official) available (or linked to) throughout this forum. Just decide what you want/need and search accordingly. Additional help may be provided in the specific topics that you decide to go with...

Newer websites not compatible with Windows 98?
submix8c replied to Daniel-J's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Forget getting updates for any Win9x-type opsys UNLESS...I have noticed that you seem to have been "hung up" over the RP7-deal... Have you even checked out the Windows Update fix (can't get there without it)? http://www.msfn.org/board/Windows_Update_F..._Me_t94225.html Have you checked out UBCD for 98SE? http://www.msfn.org/board/Unattended_Boot_..._46_t88008.html Or Autopatcher for 98SE? http://www.msfn.org/board/Auto_Patcher_Win...ish_t80800.html BTW, UBCD contains RP7MM (installed LAST!)... If you really like your 98SE, dig deeper into the forum... you'd be surprised... -
awergh - you forgot ME-ME-ME, the "cross-breed" (followed 2K & preceded XP, kind of a Pre-XP Home Edition)...
-
Ok...Point1 - This is clearly utilized to indicate an increment of "release level"; where's the beef? Point2 - Did you check the components in any Win9x Opsys? Many are from WinNT! (WinME is what, now?) Point3 - Pure command prompt is done from BOOT. I assume that the option "Exit to DOS" that yopu refer to is the "MS-DOS Mode" option; this is just a Warm Reboot to DOS that you must "Exit" to Warm Reboot back to Windows. Notice the keyword "Warm"... Summary - If you installed RPx in a "Production" environment, your bad! In my experience there are usually a minimum of three basic tiers for any given "project" (real world, fella); Development, Test, and Production. Here we have a case of "development" by one or more individuals released to us, the "testers", to confirm operability and report back. Once no more "bugs" have been found, then it may be released form "test" to "production". I know how this works; I participated in the coding of the Configuration Management Software for the USAF AFMC, called BMF (no, not Big M-F or Bad M-F; Baseline Management Facility). Jeez, even M$ recommends backups before installing some things... DUH! Common sense...

HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!! I can't believe such negativity/argument-for-sake-of-argument... Why mod a given MS operating system with "newer" stuff? THE PREFERENCE OF A GIVEN OPSYS WITH MORE GOODIES!!!!! and ABOVE ALL --- THE THRILL OF BEING ABLE TO DO IT!!!! Whaaa did he say? Did no one ever take apart a toy and put it back together BETTER, or build a model and customize it (Ford-olet)??? I have a customer that has a Ford tow truck with a Chevy engine; better than either!!! IBM supplied their software (with source back then) and the only thing they said was "if you mod it, we do not support it"... Goofie....

What's your internet connection like?

Home; probably better if Business Class (capped)... -
Krap! U R probably right... It's just that I have not used 98/ME 4 a while (even tho testing soporific's stuff) and the install I have is a complete ("full") install (?mebe not?), hence "no downloading during install" (i think, anyway)...But, here's a link to get pretty much any version - http://www.oldapps.com/msn_messenger.htm Trust these as you will... @BenoitRen - perhaps ur r rite... i'm not much into IM's, so I can't comment any further than this... I would just get MSN-Mangler straight from MS, install it, and just do what it asks (apparently it all depends on "options" that you want to install)... Just try it; if it works, ok, if not, well, uninstall and try a different version... search Microsoft.com for "MSN MESSENGER" (with quotes) and they all show up...
-
Oops, forgot.. requires .NET (min. .NET v1.1). I have used it in Win98/ME but had to install .NET...Just go with BenoitRen's suggestion for MSN-Mangler 5.0... no special requirements... just don't update it. AFAIK, it works fine... Methinks that whoever is being IM'd with has to be using the same IM software, so all IM friends would have to also have this installed and using it. Or am I wrong? Try it also; just coordinate with friends to install, get ID's, etc... if it works, kewl!

MSN Messenger 7.0 on Win98/SE/ME.

MSBATCH.INF - No more info... As far as I have been able to tell, the ProductID is derived from (your example) - XXXXX-OEM-XXXXXXX-XXXXX xxxxxx123-1234567xxxxxx

Install XP from Hard drive -working ideas?
submix8c replied to cumminbk's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
WinPE... I personally tested Win2k3 install by first loading Win2k, created a WinPE image (useable/bootable as well as this/my method) from WinXP RTM WinPE (should work with others), created a HDD image (methods available; I included VirtualCD), "burned" both to CD, booted into the associated "image backup" software and cloned it to C-drive, booted to HDD, mounted the 2K3 CD (an image, hence inclusion of VirtualCD), copied it to the C-drive, and ran WINNT32. A basic WinPE Bootable CD should be sufficient. Create it on another machine, boot it on target machine, then run your install. WinPE has small footprint, and runs any "basic" 32-bit apps; even ran Explorer under it (after gathering associated modules). My first paragraph appears to meet you requirements. Create the HDD-style image on the target HDD, place the Install stuff "wherever" on the target HDD, put target HDD in target machine, boot into it, and go... -
Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)
submix8c replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
DOTNET11.exe is same as DOTNETFX.exe (kind of). Difference is MSInstaller has been stripped out and a different "setup" program has been inserted. Also here is a link to DotNet 1.1 Service Pack 1 info... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=867460 It contains a "patch" module... In DOTNET11.exe? Have been doing "basic testing" of UBCD, sloooowly inserting patch-by-patch and re-installing. DirectX is a looooong install! Some modules "moved" to different locations since the install switches/method has been changed (but you knew that...). Some "oddball" errors, unknown causes as of yet (still may be a CPU cooling problem?). However, after changing all "/W" to "/WAIT" (old DOS-style to Windows-style) in START instructions, appeared to have corrected(???). If Mplayer9+Codecs not installed but instead MP7.1 (from IE install) then some "fixes" missing (and my point is?). Full integration of AP into UBCD would probably work flawlessly... create an "AP Integrator" for selective UBCD installations? Work, work, work! Did you get your G-mails ok? Respond off-line please... -
Uh, yeah, that SHOULD work too! Either way...
-
After installing - - Start Internet Explorer - Click "Tools" (at the top) - Click "Internet Options" - Click "Advanced" (at the top) - All of the Internet Explorer Settings will be listed. Just scroll down to "Microsoft VM" and Enable it by clicking on the "circle" which makes a "black dot". Note that you must also Restart. - Now click "Apply" (at the bottom) Restart (it will do it for you, tell it "Yes"). Voila! MSJVM is activated.

Did you learn this by Setting the Partition Active (one must be active) and allowing the PC to boot to it (NOT using the "F10" key )? If so, can't help much on "PC Angel"...
