  1. You mean MS Office Shortcut Bar (Office XP and earlier). I use it, very handy. You can add other apps as well, have several toolbars, etc. To start it go to start, programs, Microsoft Office Tools. Can be set to open on startup. Office 2003 no longer has it, but you can install it from previous version if you have the CDs http://www.outlook-tips.net/archives/2004/20040323.htm
  2. Office (Excel only handles 15 digits. Your 16th digit is ignored
  3. If you want it without contacting MS, it is available at the hotfixnet site (sorry, the URL is automatically disguised on this board, google for XP SP3) (number 893056) Note: this is an unofficial collection of post SP2 hotfixes, the claim that they will be included in SP3 is spurious. The hotfixes which MS asks you to contact them about, such as this one, always state Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix. So it is not a good idea to install one of these unless you are sure you need it. That is why Autopatcher does not include them.
  4. I'm not aware of any, it is real player proprietary format.
  5. I don't think Excel supports numbers with more than 15 significant digits (and the sum function may make an error in the 15th if the sum then has more than 15 digits)). Your numbers have 17 significant digits (omitting the two zeros at the end) Somewhat clumsy work around: enter the first 14 digits of each number in one column, replacing the others by zeros and sum that. Enter the last set of numbers in the next column, sum those, then you will need to add the two sums outside Excel. 3512641584565700000 89200 3512641584589800000 52100 3452745584568700000 84300 10478028753724200000 225600 <--- sums correctly done by Excel 10478028753724200000 + 225600 = 10478028753724425600
  6. For office outlook XP/2002: taken from the help file (always a good place to look :-)) Reduce the size of a data file A data file is a Personal Folders file (.pst). If you delete items from a data file, the size of the file will not change unless you compact the file. Compacting the file might take several minutes. On the File menu, click Data File Management. Click the data file that you want to compact, and then click Settings. Click Compact Now. Note When you compact a .pst file, you do not have to exit Outlook.
  7. It might be helpful if you described exactly what is not working in WMP 10: does it not open at all, will it not play certain audio or video file types, will it not rip/burn audio CDs or what? Depending on what the problem is, you may be missing a video codec, or you may not have some settings in Tools, options, correctly or, or, ... http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...h%3BEN-US%3Bwmp is a FAQ and trouble shooting guide for WMP, I suggest you look through that. Also MS knowledgebase articles http://support.microsoft.com/search/defaul...r%2010&srch=sup You could also check for updates.
  8. Server is missing from your xls XP sheet. Supports file, print, and named-pipe sharing over the network for this computer. If this service is stopped, these functions will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. Default is automatic I think this is only needed for networked PCs, but I also found that it needs to be started to run Microsoft baseline security analyzer on a stand alone PC. I have it set at manual, as I normally don't need it, but MBSA will not start it, I have to do so manually before running MBSA.
  9. To get it in the right click contect menu of any folder, at least in XP home, you need to edit the registry, add [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd] @="Open Command Window Here" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd\command] @="cmd.exe /k \"cd %L\""

  13. http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp click on find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems brings the page with the drop down box For me that includes the following list of XP versions: Windows XP Family Windows XP Home Edition RTM Windows XP Home Edition SP1 Windows XP Home Edition SP2 <------------ Windows XP IA64-bit edition Windows XP IA64-bit Edition RTM Windows XP IA64-bit Edition SP1 Windows XP IA64-bit Edition Version 2003 Family Windows XP IA64-bit Edition Version 2003 RTM Windows XP IA64-bit Edition Version 2003 SP1 Windows XP Professional RTM Windows XP Professional SP1 Windows XP Professional SP2 <------------- Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Windows XP RTM Windows XP SP1 Windows XP SP2 <------------ Windows XP x64 Edition Family As for drivers, maybe they don't think thereare substantive differences for component drivers between SP1 and SP2
  14. Mabe I've misunderstood your problem, but in Windows Explorer, with that folder selected, then in the right pane, in details view, if date modified column doesn't show, right click on the column headings, select date modified. Then you can sort by date modified in the usual way by clicking on that column heading (toggles between dates ascending and dates descending).
  15. Not sure this is the answer, but have you tried in Outlook, Tools menu, address book, then in the window that opens Tools menu, options; if the when sending mail section shows the two options, highlight the one you don't want and click remove. Another possibility: in Outlook, Tools menu, E mail accounts, in the window that opens select view or change existing directories or address books, click next. If that shows the redundat entry you can remove it.
  16. I have had no problem slipstreaming SP2 onto my Dell OEM XP sp1 (home). I did it three ways, one manually, one using nlite, one using autostreamer. All the OEM files are in there. With nlite, I also slipstreamed post SP2 updates onto the previously slipstreamed XP SP2 disk, no problems. There are some Dell OEM XP Pro disks that have additional non slipstreamed patch updates, for those to slipstream them you need to remove a couple of files. http://vbdotnet.home.comcast.net/XP_SP2.htm As for Dell, I have had my Dimension 8300 for about 2.5 years now. The only time I had a problem requiring customer support was when the NEC 1100 DVD writer died. The call took about ten minutes, and they agreed to send someone round to replace the drive, which was done at the agreed date and time. Dell support even rang back unsolicited to check that everything had gone OK. It may be that I was lucky, I agree that there are many complaints about Dell's customer support. However their user forum is one of the best for getting problems solved http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/

  21. I have a stand alone PC, XP SP2, all updates. Windows updates offered .NET framework 2. After installing it, I get about twice a day an event error log: Source .NET Runtime Category None Event ID 0 The description for Event ID(0) in source (.NET Runtime) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE=flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Unable to open shim database version registry key-v2.0.50727.0000 I do not understand this description. What Help and Support is being referred to? With what should I use the /AUXSOURCE= switch, and how/where do I set the value of flag? What is the shim database version registry key? How can I determine what app, if any, is causing this message to appear? I don't connect to remote computers (except, of course when browsing, or to my ISP servers for email). I don't use any instant messaging or Windows messenger (disabled), etc. Services such as Alerter, Messenger, Net Logon, are disabled. I have about four or five apps that need .NET framework 1.1, which is also installed (with updates). These apps run OK and I never got .NET runtime errors with just .NET framework 1.1 installed. None of these were running at the time the error was recorded. I have not been able to correlate the time of these error messages with the use of any particular app or process. There are no other events logged (info, warning or error) either in application or service, that are anywhere close to the .NET runtime error in time. I have set the .NET Runtime optimization service to manual, but the errors occur whether that service is running or not. I am not into developmemt of software, whether based on .NET or any other platform. As far as I have been able to fix them automatic update is switched off for all apps and I have no scheduled tasks enabled. (I prefer to check for updates and do routine scans, etc. manually in my own time). I tried uninstalling .NET framework 2, and of course then the errors did not occur, but reinstalling it they are back. I realise that I don't really need .NET framework 2 at present, but no doubt as apps get updated I will need it later, so would like to find a fix for this now. Any help, information or advice would be most welcome.
  22. Crerate a new account for whatever username your mom wants to use, then delete your username account.
  23. As far as folder views is concerned, by default XP remembers about 400, if you have many more folders then you will get some not remembered correctly. This can easily be changed by a regedit. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm click on F and scroll down to section starting Folder views. It gives instructions on changing the data for BagMRU Size value in two keys. I have mine set to 7000 (decimal). (Note: TweakUI claims to have a setting to do this but it has a bug as it enters the wrong name for the value)
  24. Have you looked at File, Import and Export? You can export the contents of the inbox and subfolders, or individual folders (with or without their subfolders); you can filter by from or sent to or key words, and other options. You can export to a .pst file, or if more convenient, to a database format such as Access, Excel, some others. It would not be too difficult, I think to write a macro to automate the process, so the users would not need to go through the import/export wizard windows each time.
