  1. .NET framework 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 are independent of each other, you can install/uninstall them separately. Older apps might require 1.0 (if not present will try to use 1.1) Most current apps use 1.1. Few if any released apps use 2.0 because that is still in beta and officially the beta should not be used in redidtributed software. If 1.1 is not installed apps needing it will try to use 2.0 beta. It does no harm to have all versions on the same PC. BTW: there is a 2.0 RC version available http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Micro...86/1016688677/1 Uninstall previous versions of 2.0 beta before installing that one.
  2. There are several sites from which you can download .dll files, some ocx and other files, but you have to check that it is the version you want, they don't always say. The most comprehensive is http://www.dynamiclink.nl/index.htm but you have to pay for each download. Some free downloads available at http://dll.yaroslavl.ru/ http://www.5starsupport.com/info/dll.htm http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/index.shtml
  3. Have you thought of using Autopatcher? updated monthly. http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=386434
  4. ? I have eject in context menu of CD/DVD drives.
  5. MS have released an advisory addressing this problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909444 http://www.dozleng.com/updates/Microsoft-S...9444-t6600.html
  6. I haven't had problems, but others have: http://www.aviransplace.com/index.php/arch...cause-problems/ apparently uninstall update is only known cure at present.

    Pop ups

Also disable messenger service (not related to Windows messenger; it's the one admins use on corporate networks; but some malware uses it also).
  8. You could just right click on the key you want to delete, click permissions, and give the account you are logged in as full rights on that key.
  9. XP pro or XP home? The reason for asking is that home does not have the group policy editor, and the procedure is different.
  10. You could try right click on it, click properties, see whether it gives any info (e.g. description, company,...) in the version tab. Also, if you open the.xml file in Notepad or IE, reading that may give a clue as to what the files belong to and what it does.
  11. MS has recently released an update to msconfig for XP SP2, that adds a tools tab, giving access to a number of Windows tools by default: KB 906569 According to that article one should be able to add tools to the list, by editng a file, Cfgtlist.xml. The update did not create such a file (searched with 'show hidden files and folders' checked, 'hide protected system files' unchecked) (although the default list of tools does show in msconfig, so they must be coded in somewhere else?). So I tried creating one to add a few tools, such as Sysinternals process explorer and some Nirsoft utilities, as per the example given in that article, and saved it in the C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries as instructed. However they do not show in msconfig (also after reboot). No error messages either Has anyone succeeded in adding tools to the default list? If so, detailed instructions would be welcome.
  12. Deepnet Explorer is an IE based tabbed browser with a very good newsfeed reader (free). It also has a p2p addin, but you don't need to install that if you don't want it. The browser is also good. http://www.deepnetexplorer.com/
  13. I have occasionally observed that in Windows Explorer when selecting files. closing/reopening solves it there.
  14. Word 2002/XP You can add merge fields inside the text box in the same way as anywhere else in a Word document. Having created the Word doc with a text box, select the data source you want so that the mail merge toolbar is active. Place the cursor in the text box, click insert merge fields icon on mail merge toolbar, select the merge field you want to add, click insert, and it appears in the text box. To add an ID number, you would of course need to have that field in your mail merge data source. If you don't have it, you should edit your mail merge data source (depeending on what you use: I use a Word table, with columns labelled corresponding to the merge fields; others use Excel or Access tables, etc.) You can then format/resize/move the text box and its contents to suit. I used that to make an envelope template with the from and to address blocks where I wanted them.
  15. You can also install UPHclean, an additional MS service that forces apps to release handles on user profile during shutdown, to speed this up. UPHClean
  16. Just close the autorun window (click on X top right), then use Windows explorer to browse the CD to get the file you want.
  17. Add to Andromeda's list: Make sure you have no virus/malware.
  18. The C:\I386 is from your original install (was it XP, or XP SP1). The one in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\I386 is from the service pack you have since installed (probably SP2). That is one of the places sfc would look for the latest version of a file if the active one in system32 folder needed replacing (when you run sfc /scannow, for example). So don't delete that folder. The previous versions that get reinstalled if you uninstall a hotfix are in the corresponding C:\Windows\$NTUninstal...$ folders.
  19. I would be careful about that: a lot of the hotfixes it includes are of the kind normally you have to contact MS to get them; these are not fully tested, and any such should be applied only if the particular issue it deals with occurs on your PC.
  20. That's why I posted the link to sourceforge, try it.
  21. You might find this one works better: http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/
  22. Several similar reports on other fora of inability of downloading updates through check for updates. The problem lies at their end. You can manually download updates from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/ Extract the defs.ref file from the downloaded zip file and place it in your Adaware folder (click yes to replace the old one). The defs.ref files are cumulative, i.e. the latest one includes all previous ones.
  23. To find out what startup items are and do, use http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html or http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm Edited as just saw I gave the same link twice..
