  1. Many thanks for the info dencorso. I have noted your comments in respect of the USBSTOR.INF file. I have been testing v2.4 on a USB2.0 enabled mobo (VIA K8T800Pro VT8237 southbridge) and did not want to disturb the existing USB2.0 driver. I just wanted to add mass usb storage capability hence my interest in v2.x. So far all seems well with no issues. NUSB 2.4 has detected the drives that I connected (Corsair 1Gb & 4Gb) a digital camera Sony DSC (usb1.1) and a Sandisk SD reader. The remove hw icon in the system tray has ejected all drives (& reader) correctly. Although this board has a VIA SATA controller, I have my HDD connected to the on-board Promise SATA controller since I o/c the cpu. It is because of this slightly more complex set up (ie on-board Promise controller runs on the PCI bus) that I did not want to use NUSB v3.x but may wish to use updated USBSTOR.INF files (although don't think I will be using usb floppy drives, prefer the normal variety). Many thanks again for the info Cheers
  2. Many thanks for the info noguru. >>Fredledingue, I guess that since no new script is being written for 98se running no AV is not so dangerous anymore. Well as I said above, when I trialed BitDefender 10 icons in the system tray turned black, there were lock ups and 'bidlite' in ctrl-alt-del stopped responding. Apparently, my experience was not an isolated example. I still have a couple of 98se systems running Norton and have seledom have had any issues with them. Having said that it is the 2003 version, the last version which was not bloated. I think Norton stopped 98se support on the 2005 version. Also add NOD32 to your list, I had issues with it but to do with a conflict with my imaging program. Good Luck
  3. Many thanks for the info noguru. I don't have Avast installed on my system now but for clarity you are saying start the scan from AvastSS.scr. Do you double click on that file? Is that for a full scan only? what about scanning just single files or folders. Cheers PS Also tried - Bit Defender 10, icons in system tray turned black, lock ups and 'bidlite' in ctrl-alt-del stopped responding - AntiVir Free very sparse and apparently no HTTP scanning - NOD32 which seemed to lock up on boot at desktop but I think that this was associated with my Second Chance recovery prog.
  4. Having read the 21 pages of this very informative thread I wonder if I can clarify and confirm the following points please. 1. The main difference between NUSB v2.x and v3.x is as follows: a- v2.x contains just the mass USB storage driver. b- v3.x contains the mass USB storage drive AND the USB2.0 controller driver. 2. If v2.x is already installed on a system can the existing USBSTOR.INF file version (c:\windows\INF) be replaced by the updated USBSTOR.INF file from v3.x (ie just a cut and paste). 3. If v2.x is already installed on a system, is it not possible to upgrade to v3.x by installing v3.x over (so need to ghost partition prior to any NUSB install). Have I understood all this correctly please? Many thanks for your help Cheers
  5. What AVG versions are you guys running, I ask because I tried it a while ago installing v7.5.432 and got a BSOD everytime I started an on-demand scan. I see the latest version is 7.5.516. I also tried Avast 4.7 but the well documented problem there is the systray icons disappear when doing a full system scan. Kaspersky v6 had 100% cpu usage as an issue. Cheers
  6. Many thanks for the info fishindude. I have also been doing some testing with NUSB but using v2.4 which seems to just be the generic usb drivers. I am not sure I want to disturb the via usb 2.0 drivers on my system so I thought I would try the earlier NUBS rather than v3.x. v2.4 seems to just overlays the generic usb drivers without disturbing my existing usb 2.0. The Corsair 4Gb stick was immediately and correctly detect and the eject HW icon in the system tray worked and ejected the drive. The Corsair stick was also correctly displayed in the Device Manager under 'Enhanced USB' ie it was operating at usb 2.0 speeds. It also created a USB Drive entry in Device Manager much like the one found in XP. I also tried an old Sony digital camera (usb 1.1) and that also was detected, worked well and ejected to. I even connected both units at the same and transfered from one to the other with no apparent ill effects. I will try a couple of more usb devices and hope that there is no conflict. Cheers
  7. Many thanks for your replies guys. fishindude, I take it you installed NUSB, if so which version. From my understanding v2.x seems to add generic usb drivers while v3.x expands the list of supported flash drives as well as taking over USB 2.0 support. Fredledingue, I have in the interim run across several posts which also confirm no ill effects from simply disconnecting the flash drive without using eject. Obviously, this is not to be done when drive is in operation. So far I have not had any blue screen or error messages from 98SE when disconnecting and the data transfered does not seems to be corrupted in any way. Cheers
  8. Many thanks for your reply Ambassador but the drive is nevertheless still accessible. On my 1Gb Corsair drive it works as you have described ie windows displays error box after eject is selected. Does anyone know whether this is a shortcoming of the Corsair / Silicon Motion driver? Cheers
  9. Running a Corsair 4Gb USB stick with the Silicon Motion controlled on 98SE (4.10.2222A) and have a question regarding ejecting the drive. If > My Computer> right click on Corsair drive select eject an hourglass comes up for a second but the drive does not eject. 98SE does not display any error message box nor any bluescreen. If I physically disconnect the drive after the failed eject command, equally no error messages or bluescreen. My Corsair 1Gb stick which has the Prolific controller, eject works fine. I am using the Corsair supplied drivers, the old driver for the 1Gb stick and the new driver for the 4Gb stick. Question: Is anyone else using this Corsair stick (Silicon Motion) with the new Corsair driver on 98SE getting this same (non-eject) issue. Many thanks
  10. No prob dencorso. In truth, I got the 4Gb since I did not want to spend that much on a flash drive. This time next year the 16Gb will be selling for the same price as the 4Gb. In respect of the controller and FYG, I understand that 2Gb and over models now have the Silicon Motion controller, the others ie under 2Gb have not. Good Luck
  11. RainyShadow & Mijzelf, many thanks for your directions. Much appreciated. PassingBy, I was made aware of NUBS by dencorso who replied to my thread above and I must admit that it is a more elegant solution. However, since my wife now needs her 98se to finish her thesis now would be a bad time for mishaps on my part. Are you saying that I could edit the .inf file to the current ie old (Corsair) windows driver that is installed for my current Corsair 1gb stick and add the VID/VIP. I did try to look for any corsair .inf file in C:\windows\inf but found nothing that looked like a likely candidate. Furthermore, even if I found the .inf file I am not sure what the VID/VIP are. The controller on the 1Gb Corsair which I have currently installed is Prolific as stated by my Device Manager. Many thanks for your kind info Cheers
  12. I received my 4Gb Corsair Flash Voyager drive today and it appears that the controller of this new drive is different to the one on my 1Gb Corsair. Reason being that when I connect the 4Gb drive to my win98 box which has the driver for the 1Gb Corsair drive, win98 displays the 'New Hardware Found' wizard. It would appear that the new Corsair win98se driver is required for this drive to operate and I was just going to install that for ease. My question is as follows and relates to installing this driver as there is no .exe file The new win98 Corsair driver contains the following three files - Smimbpdr.pdr - Smimb.sys - Smimb.inf I suspect that to install this new driver, I need to right click on the Smimb.inf file and select install. Here is a link to that file http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthre...ftware+Download and click on link for Newer Win9x Driver for Flash Voyager located in RAM GUYS sig Many thanks for any info provided Cheers
  13. dencorso, many thanks for taking the time to completely clarify. PassingBy, it was most kind of you to take the trouble of going into such detail. Although I dual boot several pcs (98SE/XP), my wife steadfastly uses 98SE on her pc and with the info provided at least I can now upgrade her memory stick with no probs. I may just go for the 4GB stick for ease but at least in future I will know how to proceed with larger capacities. Cheers
  14. Many thanks for your very informative reply dencorso. Following your comments I did some more searching on the 'house of help' forum and have found an old and new win98 driver. They are listed in RAMGUY's sig below http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53660 For complete clarity, I have 3 final questions please if you have the time. 1. The old win98 driver (which I have currently installed) is for the 1,2 & 4Gb Corsair memory sticks with the Prolific 2518 controller. 2. The new win98 driver is for the 8Gb (and over) memory stick running the Silicon Motion SM321QF controller. Have I understood this correctly, and finally 3. Does the new win98 driver also work for the memory sticks with the Prolific 2518 controller ie 1,2 &4Gb. Many thanks for your kind help Cheers
  15. Seasons Greetings to all. I am currently using a 1Gb Corsair Flash Voyager drive [Model #: CMFUSB2.0-1GB] on Win98SE (4.10.2222A). I installed the Corsair supplied driver and the drive is working without any issues. I have 2 quick questions 1. I wanted to purchase a larger such drive from Corsair (either the 4Gb or 8Gb of the same model ie CMFUSB2.0-4GB / 8GB) and was wondering whether 98SE would have any issues either detecting or working with these larger capacity sticks. Indeed, is there any limit applicable to 98SE 2nd edition in respect of these memory sticks. 2. Presumably the Corsair driver which I installed for the 1Gb stick would also work for the larger Corsair sticks ie 4/8Gb also. Many thanks for any info provided Cheers
  16. Many thanks for your input Analada. Previously to posting I had disabled the 4 NVidia items in msconfig but this made no difference whatsoever. The only driver that will install on this card is the 82.16. However, it is possible to install earlier versions ie 81.98 by hacking the inf file. I did this and installed the 81.98 but frankly it was worse than the 82.16. I am surprised to hear that the GF6 cards have driver problems with 98SE. I say this because I have a Leadtek 6800 n/u 128Mb which ran on an MSI KT3 Ultra 2 and with my current set up an Asus A8V Deluxe rev 2 without one single problem. I think I was using the FW 62.11. However, since you cured it all fine. Some further update on the 7800GS. Athough at first the only problem appeared to be shutdown related, other issues are now emerging one of which is continuous IE errors together with WMP problems. I think that the 82.16 driver is complete c**p. I have read countless threads about this card working perfectly in XP. The 98SE FW is unfortunately totally corrupt to say the least. I spoke to BFG who confirmed to me that NVidia where not going to fix this driver and BFG had 'nothing further to suggest'. My conclusion in respect of the 7800GS is as follows if you have XP then as a final upgrade it's fine. If you have 98SE anywhere in the frame give this card a wide berth, unless you know any different. Not sure how to move forwards from here, maybe I will get rid of this card and go for a 6800Ultra and o/c it..... Cheers
  17. I did see that awergh. I can live with that.glocK_94, I thought long and hard before parting with my cash plus I also got this card cheap but new from ebay. Paid 2/3 of the full retail price, otherwise would not have jumped into it. I get the same shutdown issues if I try that which I already did before posting. Once pc is off if I boot ie cold boot scandisk runs. My alternative simply because I dual boot with XP is to reboot to my XP partition and then shutdown. I have not installed the card into XP yet but hope there will be no further issues. Apart from the shutdown issue things seem ok with this card. At this stage there are no other issues that are manifesting themselves. The card is fast but I don't game much in 98SE. Do you want me to post some benchmark results from 98SE, if so let me know which ones. The one thing about this card is that the fan is really loud when running on full. Like a hairdrier no less but using RivaTuner the fan can be slowed down in 2D/3D mode and runs quietly. The card runs pretty cold 39/40C on idle. The BFG has a cold bug problem also whereby if the card's temp falls much below the high 30's (the card's) performance can and does collapse. So slowing the fan down alleviates that issue also. The one last thing about this card is that it runs at 400/1250 with 16pps and 6vps but it can be overclocked giving additional boosts. Coolbits showed that this card can run at 500/1400 and many have it set even higher. Cheers
  18. Is anyone using a 7800GS (AGP) card with Win98SE without any issues. I ask because I have a dual boot system 98SE / XP and am trying to install a BFG 7800GS OC using the 82.16 drivers listed on BFG's site. The drivers install correctly but I am having shutdown issues with the pc either hanging on a dos type screen or getting a 'windows protection error' message. I read the earlier thread to do with 7 series cards and hacked the 81.98 inf file so that it could install those drivers but am getting more issues with the 81.98. In the first instance, can anyone confirm that they are running a BFG 7800GS (or any 7800GS) without issues on 98SE. Many thanks
  19. Many thanks for your replies guys. ssmokee, your explanation has cleared up some of my confusion ( I am also clearer on HAL). The VT8237 (Via) southbridge has 'native' SATA support so 'in theory' from what you are saying I should just be able to install 98SE without any issues. Thereafter I can install the Via SATA drivers for purposes which you have explained namelly, o/s management and monitoring purposes. Andromeda43, I note your success using the Sata PCI card but I did not want to have my SATA HDD on the PCI bus and hence was trying to get info on installing 98SE on the motherboard's native SATA controller. In the interim I have read a great number of threads on this issue and the general picture appears to be as follows (reflection of ssmokee's comments). Many people have installed Win98SE on SATA HDD using their motherboards 'native' sata controller without any problems whatsoever (same way as PATA HDD) and then installed the SATA drivers. Others have had to completely install their o/s on a PATA drive and then install the SATA controller drivers. Once these steps were executed, they would clone the newly created partition to a SATA drive. I guess I have clarity as to what I should do. I will shortly be doing an install on my test system to see if the theory works fine. Cheers
  20. I wonder if someone can help please. I am thinking about upgrading my system and using SATA HDDs. I currently dual boot with 98SE and XP. I want to continue using 98SE and prior to upgrading, I wanted to be clear on what I need to do. I have read posts on this forum that state that 98SE and SATA will work. 98SE does not natively support SATA so the software to enable SATA has to be loaded ater the 98SE installation. Questions: 1. Do I therefore install 98SE on a PATA drive then load the SATA driver and copy the installation over to a SATA disk???? 2. The mobo I am thinking of using is the MSI K8T Neo2 (Via Chipset/8237 southbridge). I have looked on the Via Arena site and I am confused as to which one it is. Can anyone help by providing some clarity. Many thanks
