  1. Tyan SuperMicro and of course any of the following will happily sell you a 16GB or more machine, IBMs max in the multiples of terabytes; the largest Sun I've seen is 256GB: IBM Dell HP/Compaq Sun Microsystems (though to run XP on one of these would be a travesty) Silicon Graphics, Inc. (would also be a travesty) Apple (can't run XP on these yet... but hey, it does support up to 16GB)
  2. properly configured, this one can be very difficult to bypass, but simply deleting the files deepfreeze uses while it's running is enough to disable it. a few hidden servces and whatnot isn't enough to deter the determined users. My suggestion? RIS once a week.

    Beta HFSLIP

While using old drivers on new hardware is not always the best way to do things, or the fastest, stability is hardly the issue. Any hardware that has drivers on the XP CD that requires an update for stability reasons will have one available via Windows Update. As for using the drivers on a 4 year old computer with a 4 year old OS, it's not like bugs suddenly *appear*... Now, if you have updated drivers available, trying them out isn't always a bad idea. I usually only recommend clients that a driver upgrade is necessary when they run across a specific, repeatable issue that is fixed by the driver upgrade.

    Slowww PC

I call BS! From: "Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed Put as much RAM in the machine as you can get. I've used up to 1GB in a Win98SE machine before. There's not much of a difference out beyond 512MB though, except with large programs.

    minlogon

minlogon simply doesn't save the settings. this limitation is discussed in the Windows XP Embedded documentation. I was considering coming up with a better alternative at one point but I abandoned the idea due to time constraints and the sheer ugliness of this part of the win32 API. <puke/>
  6. still experiencing this BSOD on a gateway 3550GZ (SoundMax chipset. http://325i.org/smaxgw.rar )
  7. RSS for each thread would be awesome, instead of just two categories. eg. if I had a thread I wanted to follow in particular instead of simply having to click on it every time.. esp. since I use Apple's RSS screensaver
  8. basically my ultimate goal for this project is to port your work to C instead of batch files. The first step, I think, is to populate a uAwiki page with a step by step howto. From there crafting the code is pretty easy. I'm going to finish working on my updater today (similar to ryanvm's work, but portable to any host OS... I generate my updated CDs on my Mac and my Linux box), and then start work on the tutorial. Oh, and thanks for leading my blind butt to that sticky.
  9. Welcome Back, BTS. =) Please get in touch with me when you get a chance, I'd like to see about helping you out with DriverPack development.
  10. Could someone provide some links so that I can make a tutorial?
  11. I poked around the themes a bit and it appears that there is no way to determine what version of WPI a theme is designed for. If this is something people are interested in I could complete it this afternoon. Thoughts?
  12. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> you need to put that line in the prepack.bat as one line, and not two, as you appear to have done.
  13. I know that at least nuhi and ryanvm have quite a bit of knowledge in this area, but is there a diagram somewhere of specifically what update.exe does? I think we should begin to document the boot & install procedure as completely as possible.
  14. I was asked for the driver for Plug and Play Monitor during install device detection phase. interesting.
  15. same problem with method 2 on a gateway, soundmax. SoundMAX Gateway Driver It works fine when I include this driver in a separate driverpack. my HWIDs, in case you might be missing some: PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8031&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_00\4&16793A72&0&38F0: PCI to CARDBUS Bridge PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8032&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_00\4&16793A72&0&3AF0: IEEE 1394 Controller PCI\VEN_104C&DEV_8033&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_00\4&16793A72&0&3BF0: Mass Storage Controller PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4401&SUBSYS_202F161F&REV_01\4&16793A72&0&40F0: Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2448&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_83\3&61AAA01&0&F0 : PCI to PCI Bridge PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C2&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&E8 : Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C3&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&FB : Intel® 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller - 24C3 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C4&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&E9 : Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&FD : Multimedia Audio Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C6&SUBSYS_2030161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&FE : PCI Modem PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C7&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&EA : Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24CA&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&F9 : IDE Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24CC&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&F8 : PCI to ISA Bridge PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24CD&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_03\3&61AAA01&0&EF : Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3580&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&00 : PCI HOST Bridge PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3582&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&10 : Video Controller (VGA Compatible) PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3582&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&11 : Video Controller PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3584&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&01 : Intel® 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Controller - 3584 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_3585&SUBSYS_203E161F&REV_02\3&61AAA01&0&03 : Intel® 82852/82855 GM/GME/PM/GMV Processor to I/O Controller - 3585 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4220&SUBSYS_27018086&REV_05\4&16793A72&0&48F0: Network Controller USB\ROOT_HUB\4&229725C&0 USB\ROOT_HUB\4&996039D&0 USB\ROOT_HUB\4&F426B55&0 USB\ROOT_HUB20\4&24655B8D&0 4 matching device(s) found.
  16. after about an hour of figuring it out, as whatcounter is totally borked under links, I managed to get wget --referer="http://ryanvm.msfn.org/updatepack.html" http://ryanvm.msfn.org/files/RVMUpdatePack1.3.1.cab to work. Ryan, if you want, I can host a torrent. =)
  17. when I change my key on my microsoft-provided xp sp2 pro corporate to one so common it was blacklisted in SP1 (yes, that's right, sp*1*) and use the disable trick, it pops up a dialog in the bottom right corner of IE mentioning that the site is trying to use an activex control that has been disabled, then continues to work fine if I ignore that popup. for the retail version that needs to be activated, I used one that had been activated mroe than 3 times, tried the same thing, and again, it works fine. Are you using this method? (or even sp2 at all?)
  18. Ghost 9.0 installs a 32-bit driver that is used to create images of currently mounted filesystems. Sorry buddy, you're out of luck. try booting from a BartPE disk.

  20. physical memory does not really draw all that much current. Motors (such as the ones n fans, hard drives, CD-ROMs, etc), on the other hand, and CPUs... I have an IBM box @ my work w/ 8 power4 CPUs and 128GB, it draws quite a lot of power but if I hot-remove 7 of the CPUs and turn off the RAID array it's comparable to a P4, current wise... speed, though...
  21. synchronous cable. something like 5mbit up/down for $200 would even be acceptible.
  22. the asus box should scream by comparison but I've found on more recent machines that the hard disk read/write/access time is very important. I'd swap if I were youi.
