  1. do NOT use virtual box, they HATE us Win98ers.
  2. thanks for all recent posts, i'm working on a December release but its not going to be ready probably until the new year. I have high hopes for this new version. Stay tuned ... and have a safe holiday period!
  3. sorry, i didn't say ... thanks for this. I added it a few days ago to the list. Cheers.
  4. I'll look into it ... the next edition of Auto-Patcher will hopefully have all current problems solved. I've been working hard ! Sop. PS - this would have been better posted in the Auto-Patcher thread, but not the end of the world. Remember for next time ...
  5. Hi there, I recently made an unattended DVD for a friend but he wanted Turkish as the input language and i had somehow taken that out. Rather than redo the DVD, i investigated a fix for this problem and came up with this: 1) Use the INF file attached 2) You will need a copy of Windows XP on disc -- any version should be fine. Instructions: 1) Choose the file you wish -- either re-install all missing BASIC languages, or install ALL missing languages (use this to install East-Asian languages) http://soporific.dsleague.com/files/Add-al...uages-to-XP.zip http://soporific.dsleague.com/files/Add-all-Languages.zip 2) extract the zip file contents onto the target machine that needs languages restored. Inside ZIP file is only one file, a INF file, right-click it and choose to INSTALL 3) files will start to copy over, then stop and ask you for a Source CD. You can use ANY Windows XP disc -- simply use the Winborg DVD, or something else, and point to a i386 folder. On the Winborg DVD, the best i386 folder to use (there are 3) is the one at this location: D:\z-OS\Standard\I386\ assuming your DVD drive is the letter D: 4) after its all finished, reboot, and you should be able to use all East-Asian Languages (actually all languages get re-installed). hope this helps you all out! Soporific.
  6. I think i can help, PM me. I just fixed a problem where Turkish was missing from the list of Input Languages in Windows XP. IF this is similar to your problem, i think i can help. PM me.
  7. Hi everyone, I've been away for a bit working on another project that's now finished, and so its back to Win98 stuff. I'll get a new version of Auto-Patcher together first, then try another release of UBCD. Stay tuned ... Please get your suggestions in about what to include. I've already taken notice of all the ones recently. Sop.
  8. I should have made more noise about this ... the above update in question is the first hotfix from MDGx i decided not to touch whatsoever. I tried it out, it broke something, i ditched it. All in the space of about 1 hour. For me it was breaking the method to determine the Program Files folder on a Win98 machine ... the code used vb script. MDGx is human after all. Whew!
  9. Yes, you can by-pass any superseded hotfixes ... the reason most of them are still there is due to the combinations of updates that are possible. Some people may choose not to install all the modules, and this means some superseded updates then become 'un-superseded'. Having said that, there are probably some i can take out now. I will try to get rid of all the unneeded ones before the next release. The complete list of hotfixes and updates that i maintain is the best list to use. I always update it before updating Auto-Patcher --- well that's the plan anyway. November 2007 UPGRADE is still coming ... one of these days
  10. Someone else is reporting problems starting the October release --- do me a favour, if you have a previous FULl release, can you uninstall the October one, install the older one, and see if the behaviour is the same? Also, you could try installing the Environment Space fix which is in the \files\hotfixes folder, and its called "UpConfig.exe" -- just run the file - you will need to reboot afterwards to answer your questions: * the syntax of FIND doesn't require a space, it will work without one. But be my guest and temporarily change the file by adding the space, and see if it makes a difference. * i'm not sure what you mean by "does DOS support channel symbol as *nix" etc ...
  11. * Yeah, the base install files for DX aren't in the official August 2007, we needed to nick them from December 2006. * If you have Dec 2006 installed, and you don't have a really modern video card, and you don't have .Net framework installed, then there is absolutely no point installing Aug 2007. Not a single thing is changed on your system, in fact i had to write a special registry key in order to tell Auto-patcher that it was installed after running the installation. So in answer to your question, there's no real need to install it or benefit for your OS. * If you do have .Net Framework installed, then there will be some modifications to the OS. Whether this is going to help or not -- your guess is probably better than mine.
  12. you missed "did you not know about the new NUSB" from your list of options, because that's the one that i would have chosen -- i will check it out pronto, thanks for the heads up.
  13. That's a good question ... Theoretically, you only need to download a FULL release once, and from then on you can simply download the updates and install them over what you already have on your machine. The only problem with this is that files that are subsequently deleted from the FULL releases will still be in your project folder. But apart from this, there is nothing wrong with wanting to avoid downloading 250 MB each and every time! So my advice is to wait for the October UPGRADE release.
  14. Nov 10: The October 2007 FULL release is now available from here: October 2007 FULL - 264 MB - MD5: D8E724A439750AFFC48440B0B1DA54EB - this release will not fix the problems people were experiencing with the last release, i will include any fixes i come up with in the next UPGRADE release. - the upgrade pack will be out soonish. It's going to be big due to DirectX 9.0c August 2007 change log for October 2007: new: kb939653 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 6 sp1 new: kb938977 - Unofficial 2007 Updates to Time Zone Daylight Saving Time Settings update: RichEd9x - Unofficial Rich Text Controls Update (Oct 07) update: DX_Media - Unofficial DirectX Media Update for IE 6 sp1 (Oct 07) update: RootsUpd - Root Certificate Update October 2007 (14.0.2195.0) update: DirectX9 - DirectX 9.0c (August 2007) removed: kb937143 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 6 sp1 removed: kb933360 - Unofficial 2007 Updates to Time Zone Daylight Saving Time Settings new file: Q891711, Shell98, OleUp, kb918547 (reason: fixes to issues to do with installing) updated: Revolutions Pack 7.11 -- with a better installer as well updated: KernelEx 0.32a (manual installs folder) Thanks as usual to MDGx for being the main source for Auto-Patcher content changes!
  15. Hey Submix8c me mate, yeah I could go that way, but that would be giving too much credit to Microsoft for what they have given us to play with. Which is hardly anything. All the main crucial updates to the OS come from the unofficial updates and so the official/unofficial categories aren't relevant for the purposes of auto-patcher. Anything i'm not certain about becomes optional or goes into the manual installs folder. And now that we've had that episode with those MSXML updates i'm being much more careful before releasing, both with testing and also with 'beta' releases. And don't forget that MDGx is the main source for my updates and he gets it right 99.9999% of the time so we're in pretty safe hands. Most complaints are usually about my bugs if anything. But thanks for this suggestion, it was worthy of a reply. I originally had it included but took it out in a fit after it started acting up on me. But that was my fault, not .Net 2.0s fault. I'm starting to seriously think about modifying the structure to be able to release 2 versions, the essentials and then the extras pack. Like the now defunct official autopatcher was starting to do. It will mean coding a new system but its getting to the point that i need to bite the bullet and get to work. I've got to get my other projects finished though. We'll see... NEWS: the new auto-patcher will be out when its ready, sorry i can't be more precise! I will post a change_log list soon, and i am investigating all issues people have reported. Please keep hassling me if i haven't responded for a bit, sorry, i have my fingers in too many pies to keep everyone happy. I'm very naughty like that ...
  16. Nov 6, 2007: - added lots more localized editions of updates * Added: - Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0 Update 13, - IE939653 - kb938977 - DirectX Aug 2007 * Updated: - DXM9x - Q891711 - Shell98 - RichEd9x - OleUp * Now obsolete: - IE937143 - kb933360 see first post for more detail
  17. 1) unless you are going to use the left over RAM for a RAM disk, there is NO point having 1.5 gigs in a Windows 98 machine. Win98 was NOT designed to be able to USE more than 1 gig. I would take out the 512 MB stick and just leave the 1 gig stick in there.2) even with 1 gig, you can still run into problems if you have a large graphics aperture being set in BIOS. Windows will load but you won't be able to start any additional Virtual Machines (ie DOS boxes) until you adjust MaxPhysPage and set it to "39A00" --- (MaxPhysPage=40000 can still cause problems). 3) dencorso is right, follow his suggestions as well and the links.
  18. You're right, it is something that would be good to implement, and it is a "little" bit of work but a good suggestion nonetheless. Let me mull it over (literally). Briton has it basically right ... the emphasis is on the updates as opposed to bells and whistles, but the precise formula i use when deciding whether or not to include a 3rd party app is this: 1) the app MUST provide functionality for everyday tasks that is missing from the native OS. eg, InfraRecorder was included to add CD burning capability to the OS. Karen's Directory Printer was included to add more ways of manipulating folders and lists of files. 2) Size matters and so very small apps may get in even if they don't exactly satisfy the first point, and big size apps may NOT get it even though it may be very useful to include it. I haven't got an example of this but it shouldn't be too hard to understand where i'm coming from. I agree!LATEST NEWS: i have a working copy of the FULL October release of AP but i'm doing more tests than usual, especially in conjunction with Revolutions Pack. There was a bad update in either the August or September release of AP which stuffs up the RP installation. So, this is now a priority, i won't release until it plays well with Tihiy's baby. Hopefully coming soon.
  19. Joe Tweaker is right, Auto-Patcher is primarily for re-installing an OS and the file size is big enough as it is. But thank you for the suggestions i will check them out. All you need to do is use the undo feature. Run AutoPatcher, choose to select modules, de-select every module except the tweaks, use the More Options flag to see the options for the tweak module, select the 2 tweaks you want to undo, and choose the UNDO option (press U) --- instead of installing the selected tweaks, it uninstalls them. Easy.
  20. Thanks for all this feedback! and welcome to MSFN! So you are saying that you installed each of the 'loops' above manually? Can you run Auto-Patcher again and run a report to see if Auto-Patcher thinks its now installed? It works on my version of Windows 98 --- how stable is your system? Does it ever hang or produce a Blue Screen of Death? You'll have to ask MDGx but i think it is, even though you can't see the values in the LOCAL_MACHINE section It shouldn't matter but don't use both methods at the same time. Try it out. You should be able to use TweakUI and then have the changes reflected in the Folder Options. Good point, i will investigate adding this to October 2007 Full which is due out soon.
  21. LOL .... that's the fastest sticky you've ever awarded MDGx !!! Not that it isn't deserving of this title, for it surely is! Great work Galahs!
  22. Um .... ooops. For some unknown reason, when i compiled the install package i left all the switches as they were listed in the readme.htm file and this means i used the /nobackup switch to install Revolutions Pack. This is NOT good. Anyone that has used the install package in Auto-Patcher can't uninstall it! Well, actually, there is a way, but it doesn't excuse my mistake. Profuse apologies to any who are in this position. If you would like help to fix this problem, just PM me.
  23. There is no FULL September 2007 FINAL out and i don't think i'll be doing one. I'm getting October 2007 together so that will be the next FULL release. But if you installed the FINAL September UPGRADE then this is virtually the same as if you had installed the FULL final version anyway (which no-one except me has) Re: your "out of Memory" errors, you will need to apply the "Environment Space Fix" --- have you already tried to apply this? It is available from the full main menu -- the option letter is "F" (for Friedrich Engels).
  24. If anybody actually admits to using Windows ME, they should read this wonderful comic: http://xkcd.com/323/
  25. Add the following to SYSTEM.INI MaxPhysPage=39A00 and see if it works.
