  1. Hi Ken, thanks for your kind words. I recommend downloading the December 2007 release. You can safely install it over any previous release of AP, you don't have to uninstall first. I have created new 'groups' to use within the modules section, for you, i recommend using the 'Essential' group to select the titles to install. To select 'Essential' choose D in the modules section. You will see what i mean when you install the Dec 2007 release. An UPGRADE version is just being finalised now, it should be available within 4 hours. Stay tuned ... size at present is 80 MB which is a **** site better than having to download 288 MB. You will need to have October installed though. I will make one for those who only have the August release as well, that will be tomorrow though. Can anyone who tries out the new AUTOPACH.BAT with the install counter please give feedback on it ASAP? Is it worthy of inclusion? Let me know!
  2. yes, please do so ASAP, i would like the new version in AP.
  3. how fast did it come down, what speeds were you getting? I never get to test this out, i can't justify wasting so much bandwidth! BIG NEWS: I've added a cool new little feature: an installation counter for your module choices. This will make it much easier to avoid being paranoid that you have the right choices selected. It does add a few seconds to navigation around the module choices, but the benefits vastly outweigh the small hit in performance. If you're keen to try it out, download the attachment, and overwrite (back up the old one first!) the one in your program directory (in the CODE folder). It only works with the December 2007 release. I really got a kick out of using it, i hope you do too. New_AutoPach.bat_for_AP_Dec_07.zip
  4. Cheers for that. As a bonus for all those who download the RC and test it out, you will have access to a special update that will convert your copy to the final edition. I don't expect it to be large in size but there's already a change to the change_log (thanks Retrobuddy) so i'll already be releasing something. The upgrade from the full October release will be available within 24 hours - i hope.
  5. NEWS - Jan 23: * December 2007 release candidate 1 is now available. If there is nothing fundamentally wrong with this release, in a week it will be renamed to FINAL and released to the world via the 2 mirrors AP has. * download link Size: 288 MB MD5: 816109F0E169474BC37DB88C09EEDD66 * change log * module contents - the only change in the last day was the addition of Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 - thanks to all post, comments, suggestions, etc, yada, and so on. Boo hiss to everyone else!
  6. i think i've encountered the problem you are having ... see if you can set a video aperture size in BIOS -- set it as low as possible. If you can even start a DOS box, then you don't have any memory left, because your system thinks it needs to assign heaps of memory which can be caused by a big video aperture size, but i also had this happen on a system with 1Gb RAM, i had to lower the MaxPhysPage value in SYSTEM.INI to 39999 -- there could also be a 'switch' in BIOS that changes the way your system handles memory. This is less likely because you should have had problems installing the OS if the switch was in the wrong place. Still, you should check.
  7. Just confirming: * you get error messages you have to click thru * you are not getting a message within the DOS box informing you that an application could not be run because there was not enough memory - you don't have to click anything, its just a message in the DOS box. please let me know if i'm wrong. Try adjusting the SYSTEM.INI settings, and if that doesn't allow you to run AP, can you install the unofficial 'Out of Memory' hotfix and see if that changes anything. You can uninstall it after if you wish. Sop.
  8. Hey Niknak, First thing i need to know is what exactly happens when you get the 'Out of Memory' error. The computer freezes? Crashes? What... Its strange, I have been getting some if those messages during testing the new release but it doesn't seem to affect anything crucial and they never appear in the same location when testing. I get the message, but everything continues as normal. This doesn't seem to be whats happening to you. Can you please elaborate on what's happening. Can you also PM me the contents of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. I would also like to see your auto-patcher log file, this will tell me lots. Thanks.
  9. cheers for this. I'm rolling back the update in Auto-Patcher based upon your report. MDGx, what say you?

  11. statistically speaking the figures are only a very rough guide, i would say that this says that usage has stabilised somewhat and isn't going to drop sharply anytime soon. Thanks for posting this, as i do the Auto-Patcher for Windows 98 its good to know i still have a client base!
  12. Hi all, I have more info on the problem i reported a few posts back ... there's another factor that i've only just discovered: you also need to install the Environment Space fix for Auto-Patcher to stop working. I *still* haven't found what is breaking the ability to set a SHELL command in CONFIG.SYS, which is then causing Auto-Patcher to fail. But, the problem can be avoided by the USER deleting the SHELL command from CONFIG.SYS and so its now OK to use MD's Cumulative Updater. It's pretty thorough so i'm happy that i can now recommend that people install this.
  13. Ha! What an awesome tool! Thanks erpdude8. And it works nicely in Windows 9x. based upon your comments, AnVir Task Manager Free is now in Auto-Patcher.
  14. I'll look into this. See your PM about the Twain files. NEWS - Jan 20: * Well, after countless tests, PET scans, and brain biopsies, i've finally worked out what is going on. The problem i reported about AP failing to work after installing CU + RP --- well, it turns out i've been had a red herring leading me astray this whole time. I was looking for the update triggering the problem instead of trying to working out the CAUSE of the problem. The problem is related to the Environment Space fix for Auto-Patcher. For some reason, Revolutions Pack breaks the ability of Windows 98 to be able to set a SHELL command in CONFIG.SYS -- but only if a particular update is installed (which i still haven't found). I don't know what people who need to use the ES fix are going to do if they want to use RP, but at least i can tell people who can't start AP what to do. More details soon after i run some more **** tests.
  15. News - Jan 17: * Drat! The bug that was inside MD's Cumulative Updater is now in my current build of Auto-Patcher! Woe is me, indeed. It snuck in under my guard, i'm so embarrassed. I should have assumed that it was an update inside CU that was causing the problem, and tried each time i added a new title to see if it was the culprit. Anyway, i only have a relatively short candidate list for the mastermind behind all of this, i shall announce who it was shortly. In the meantime, please feel free to place a bet on who it was. It is an update not in AP October but was going to be in December 2007 ... drum roll please ...
  16. Hi all, I have narrowed down the problem to a relatively new update (still don't know what it is) but it's not 'just' in MDCU so we can rule out anything to do with the way MD's installer actually works, its one of the updates inside it. My latest AP release that i am testing has now suddenly got this 'bug' so now i know where to look. As soon as i find it, i'll let everyone know.
  17. MDGx welcome back ... and welcome to my world . Ever since i switched to a mobo that didn't support Win98se, i've been relying on Virtual PC 2007 to do all my AP testing. Its sufficient for doing all the code testing, and then the last thing i do is a real world test on my 3rd machine (an old Pentium 3 machine). Virtual Additions works very well which makes access to the test OS very easy. It will also save you lots of time, my dual CPU handles the VM very well and Win98 inside it runs very fast, and i can also do lots of other stuff at the same time.
  18. ... OK! You guys have won me over! I'll keep the program individualised as it is, i won't go for the big all-inclusive packs, AP is one already. Its quite touching that you guys went into bat for the structure as it stands in the way that you did. I guess i'm maybe a wee bit too critical as it does what it says on the tin, more or less. anyways, i have a build i want to release, but i'm going to do a few more tests, i dunno when the next version will be out. here's the proposed Module contents list (or see codebox below). Lots of changes, i'll work on the change-log in the meantime. *** Auto-Patcher Module Contents *** for version: December 2007 - this list was last updated on January 16, 2008. - all modules are selectable - you can set to INSTALL or BY-PASS - if a title has (optional) after its name then this means the title can be excluded from installing. - some updates cannot be installed automatically - they can be found in the 'manual installs' folder in the program directory. There is a menu option that will take you there automatically. - the number in brackets refers to the number of updates in that module. - the total number of updates & hotfixes is 205. 19. Hey Xstyle, Congrats, your work is worthy of inclusion in Auto-Patcher! and so I want to put your two packs XTP and XTP2 into the next Auto-Patcher, is this OK? let me know pronto if its not, as i'm going ahead with the decision to do so. Cheers! They will be available from the manual installs folder.
  20. hi there, we have had reports that the following updates appear to not work perfectly in Windows 98se: kb921503 (MS07-043) OLEAUT32.DLL (2.40.4531.0) does not work. It causes HTML script errors with library not found messages... kb936021 (MS07-042 936227) MSXML3.DLL (8.90.1101.0) does not work. It causes application errors... kb936181 (MS07-042 936227) MSXML4.DLL (4.20.9848.0) does not work. XML 4 simply does not do anything... Broken... It was RetroOS who pointed this out, cheers. The new version of MSXML 4.0 SP2 is now version 4.20.9849.0 - and i'm wondering if things are now better ... please let me know! Sop.
  21. Woohoo! - You 'da man MDGx! - Another nice XP transplant. 98MP10 has worked well for me for some time now - it rocks! Keep up the good work with 9x! Happy New Year All! - Windows 9x alive and kicking in 2008! UPDATE: I installed the lastest 98MP10 and got a problem with two missing files. I installed 98MP10, rebooted when prompted, and then got a missing CABINET.DLL file error when the desktop appeared. I looked in the WININIT.BAK file and noticed that it had renamed CABINET.DLL and MSHTML.TLB to their .MP9 backup files but had not replaced them with anything... I recall having the same problem when I installed the last August update but was not sure if it was a one off... I have resolved the issue by copying the two .MP9 backups to their original files. RetroOS, which version re u using? I still have the version from February last year because no releases since seem to play well. I should have mentioned to MDGx but never got around to it. Hey MDGx, what RetroOS said, i get the same messages. And i've tested this quite a bit, there's always the messages.
  22. Yes, soporifc, you're right, at least in part: If you check the file version with getver.exe, it will report 4.90.0.3000, whereas if you select the file in Windows Explorer, right-click on it and select Properties, you'll find 4.90.0.3001... Of course, as it loads OK in Windows 98SE, it is the patched version, so Properties is displaying the correct value, but, at hexadecimal file offset 4717, B8 must be changed to B9, to update also the hexadecimal file version, the one getver.exe reports... i never thought to check properties--- you're really good with these 'only partially right' situations, i think this is my third with you
