  1. There is an upgrade to the December 2008 version of Auto-Patcher for Windows 98se available from this link: http://soporific.dsleague.com/main/?page_id=7 something that is new with this release is an improved installer -- this installer will upgrade your December 2007 program files to the December 2008 release exactly. Previously, obsolete updates were left behind -- which is a bit messy. Not anymore! So you don't need to get the full version to get the exact program files, just install over the 2007 ones and you'll have exactly what you would have if you had grabbed the full version. here is the final change-log: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ December 2008 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ added: kb925051 - Unofficial Jet 4.0 SP8 Fix update: kb938464 - Hotfix for Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language update: kb951066 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6 sp1 update: kb951072 - Unofficial Daylight Saving Time Zone Updates (Aug '08) update: kb954430 - MSXML 4.0 SP2 Update update: kb956390 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 6 sp1 update: 7-Zip 4.62 update: Crypt9x - Unofficial 128-bit SSL Encryption Security Fixes update: DX_Media - Unofficial DirectX Media Update for IE 6 sp1 (Oct 08) update: KernelEx 0.36 (manual installs folder) update: Flash 9.0.151 player & plugin for IE added: Internet Explorer ActiveX Kill Bits Security Fix (this update is inside kb956390 so no .exe file will be included but the code still checks for it) update: MDGx's Updates for WMP from XP & ME (Nov 08) update: OleLibUp - OLE Automation Libraries Update (OLEPRO32.DLL 5.0.4530.0) update: RootsUpd - Root Certificate Update (Nov '08) update: SCR579x - Unofficial Microsoft Scripting Engines v5.7 update: Sun Java 2 Runtime Environment 6 update 7 update: WIA11 - Unofficial Windows Image Acquisition v1.1 (was Twain98) update: VBVM60 - Unofficial Visual Basic 6.0 sp6 update (6.0.98.2) removed: Windows Update Fix 1.22 (reason: Windows Update is a joke so why encourage people to visit)
  2. Hi Drugwash, long time no speak ... good to see you're still kicking around.
  3. latest change log: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ December 2008 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ added: kb925051 - Unofficial Jet 4.0 SP8 Fix update: kb954430 - MSXML 4.0 SP2 Update update: MDGx's Updates for WMP from XP & ME (Nov 08) update: RootsUpd - Root Certificate Update (Oct '08) update: kb956390 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 6 sp1 update: DX_Media - Unofficial DirectX Media Update for IE 6 sp1 (Oct 08) update: KernelEx 0.36 (manual installs folder) update: SCR579x - Unofficial Microsoft Scripting Engines v5.7 update: kb951072 - Unofficial Daylight Saving Time Zone Updates (Aug '08) update: kb951066 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6 sp1 update: kb938464 - Hotfix for Vulnerability in Vector Markup Language added: Internet Explorer ActiveX Kill Bits Security Fix (this update is inside kb956390 so no .exe file will be included but the code still checks for it) update: Flash 9.0.151 player & plugin for IE update: 7-Zip 4.62 update: Sun Java 2 Runtime Environment 6 update 7 update: Crypt9x - Unofficial 128-bit SSL Encryption Security Fixes update: WIA11 - Unofficial Windows Image Acquisition v1.1 (was Twain98) removed: Windows Update Fix 1.22 (reason: Windows Update is a joke so why encourage people to visit) NOTE: regarding any hotfixes that Maximus Decim includes in his update packs, unless the hotfix exists as a stand-alone hotfix i won't be including it in AutoPatcher. If you feel that there is an important update that needs to be included, please bug MDGx to have a look at the update and to make one for us all. He's the best person to make up the hotfix, my previous attempts leave a lot to be desired. ALSO NOTE: -- the above change log is pretty much it ... i have included all the new updates i know about. If you think there's more, say something NOW or wait until after xmas.

Any idea where i can grab anything on '906216' from? links are always good. Thanks to RetroOS for providing this in the other thread. Cheers

  7. News: Hi again, yet again i promise to update AutoPatcher -- maybe this time it will happen! Thanks to RetroOS for giving me a nudge
  8. hi everyone ... i'm back (again) ... i was moving and it was a 'nightmare from hell' move that took forever and was traumatic to the extreme. I will read over the last few pages of the thread and reply to stuff so if you have unanswered questions, please just save me time by reposting them.
  9. Hi everyone, sorry i went AWOL ... i am sort of back but it will still be a while b4 new version. I am still keeping track of things, so don't lose hope for a new version.
  10. First, installing RC1 over the final December 2007 version is not the end of the world as long as you then installed the upgrade to Dec Final over the top. The only thing wrong with this is that there will be extra obsolete files in the AP program directory that you don't need that takes up space. The patching process should be exactly the same. Second, auto-patcher contains: DirectX 9C, IE6 and service packs, and TweakUI for 98SE, so you can remove these from your list. Also, simply FORGET about using Windows Update -- not only has Microsoft stopped updating WU, it will report that you are missing some updates when in fact you already have them installed. This happens due to the unofficial updates overwriting files that WU expects to find. There is no harm visiting WU, just treat their results with a grain of salt. You don't need Gape's Service Pack 3.2 beta, but it does install a few extra goodies that AP doesn't. I'm sorry, i can't provide a list of what is different, but you can compare the two contents lists and see for yourself. I recommend installing gape's SP after you have finished using AP. With regard to other packs, if they contained anything crucial, i would have already included them in AP. That's not to say there is no point installing them, just that its certainly not necessary. AP is designed to make your PC fully up-to-date, so to be on the safe side, its NOT a good idea to install ALL the update packs -- pick your preferred update pack and stick with it. Hope this helps.
  11. thydreamwalker, please don't confuse the issue Techoidy, you only need the latest full version, you don't need preceding versions. If re-installing the OS is an option, definitely take it. Do NOT install any updates until you have used Auto-Patcher, but by then you shouldn't need to. Auto-Patcher does what it was intended to do, provide an easy way to get your WIn98 OS updated without you having to do them all yourself. The new version is coming very soon, the upgrade pack is about 25 megs (will upgrade your AP from dec 07 to june 08). here's the change log so far: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ June 2008 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ update: "Twain Compatible Scanner Core Files Update" is now "Unofficial Windows Image Acquisition v1.1" update: Sun Java 2 Runtime Environment 6 update 6 update: Unofficial DirectX Media Update for IE 6 sp1 (Apr '08) update: kb947864 - Unofficial Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer 6 sp1 update: Unofficial Microsoft Scripting Engines v5.7 (JSCRIPT.DLL 5.7.0.20550) (removed v5.6) update: RootsUpd - Root Certificate Update (Dec '07) update: kb942763 - Unofficial Daylight Saving Time Zone Updates (Mar '08)
  12. Please note: Auto-Patcher is an automatic hotfix and update installer, it doesn't install anything on its own, it only installs other people's hotfixes. One of the updates you installed has screwed your PC, sorry to report. This can easily happen on very old OS installations (ie the OS was installed years ago). If you re-install your OS, you will find that you can use Auto-Patcher perfectly well. You will be able to install every single update and have a kick-arse OS in the end. The problems you are experiencing are probably due to you existing OS config but it also could be hardware issues.
  13. Please post in the appropriate thread which is on THIS site. I get emails when you post in that thread, as you didn't, i didn't know you had a problem. That's what didn't does.
  14. Jun 28, 2008: - Added: WIA, IE947864 - Updated: Q942763, DXM9x, SCR569x, KernelEx, OLEUP, VBVM60, SCR579x, Shockwave, DX CPL tools, USBFDD98, RootsUpd As always, thanks to MDGx for these updates.
  15. Hey win98 dev people, I actually agree that my help could come from the patcher/installer side of things. I offer my services in at least creating an installer, prob with InnoSetup -- I can also do AutoIT and VB6 scripts. In other news, I may be re-writing my AutoPatcher program in VB6 but i have to finish something else called lastXP v20 first. I haven't given up Win98 yet, just taking a break
  16. Yes, definitely possible --- i used VMs all the time to test out my projects and i get all sorts of weirdness that isn't there when i check on a real machine. Please, only reports from real machines. Mikey, you're encountering a growing problem where perfectly legal files are being flagged by who knows and they are suddenly flagged as being suspicious. It is a complete and utter waste of time for all concerned. If this is isn't a good example of the insanity of capitalism, i don't know what is. eg. NICRMD.EXE (i think you meant NIRCMD.EXE) -- is made by a great friend of freeware developers called Nir Sofer and here's where you can download NIRCMD.EXE -- http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html MAINCODE.BAT, START_ME.BAT, START_DEBUG.BAT are my babies. They are simply text files that have the extension .bat meaning they are executable. And for this crime, they are labelled as malware. This really sucks! I refuse to waste time with these issues. Thanks for listening.
  17. cheers for this, i should get a new version out soonish, i promised it but other projects caught my attention more. I shall rectify this pronto. I wouldn't be surprised! Auto-Patcher wasn't any good until the June 2007 SP2 release but, my dear friend, there have been many many releases since that version, why haven't you uprgraded? Is it purely the download size? Use a download manager that has a resume function. If not, please grab the December 2007 final edition and see if you have any problems with that.
  18. [do ya think this is anywhere close to the world record for a delayed reaction?]
  19. I agree. i initially baulked at the lack of a true silent switch but i've just used AutoIT to get around it for inclusion in my latest version of UBCD and so i may as well chuck it in AP. It adds quite a few updates up and above what AP gives you so its madness not to use it. New AP version coming soonish... thanks for the heads up re: the new version.
  20. Hi MD, Is it possible to make your 'silent installation' a true silent installation? What i mean is that the computer doesn't automatically reboot - this defeats the purpose of the silent switch. I've asked this before and you never replied, so i'm asking again, is there any good reason why the computer has to reboot automatically when using the silent switch? Why can't the user reboot themselves, after all they used the silent switch didn't they? The user knows they have to reboot. Eagerly waiting your reply, Soporific.
  21. Well, there's a few issues... * one is that the Unofficial Scripting Update 5.6 is the one causing that message about needing to download 0 bytes to install it. Using the 'never download it' option seems to fix this but i haven't tested extensively. * two, the Unofficial Scripting Update 5.7 is still causing errors for my CSCRIPT.EXE scripts so i can't include it in UBCD and i'm reluctant to include it in AP without further testing. I'm in two minds about what to do with this.
  22. Hey everyone, I've been following the discussion avidly and i've come to the conclusion that my previous fears about more incompatibilities for our dear old OS are coming true. Never again will i simply add a new update to Auto-Patcher without waiting some time to see if its any good. Stability is the key here. I've noted the conclusions down and i will get a new version of AP out soon. Cheers, keep the discussion going.
  23. Hi Ken, In Control Panel, from Add/Remove programs, uninstall the Unofficial Improved Replacement Tools. Cheers, Sop.
