Thanks in advance
  4. I agree, i can't replicate the problem myself, i just won't tell my 'IT' friend i'm highly disappointed that he can't keep his main machine in sufficient working order to run a groovy application like WPI when everybody else can! I thought i'd do the right thing and make an attempt at solving the problem so thanks for this.
  5. In order to re-install Windows without losing the setting you already have for programs and stuff, you need to delete WIN.COM from the system directory first, before trying to start setup from DOS. If you need more info that just that, please provide more info regarding "But I can't seem to just run the setup on the windows 98 CD..." and i believe i can help.
  6. aw, Tihiy, that's very gallant of you but its not the correct solution. The problem does not reside with RP, i can done countless tests to confirm for me that the decisive update is MD's cumulative Updater. I am just testing now to see if v2.40 does the same thing as a request by MD (who got in touch!) ... and anyway, i can drop RP from Auto-Patcher but that's not going to stop other people from combining the two updates (CU and RP) and then they will wonder why they can't use AP. People have already reported this, and i've still got some checking to do but this is how it seems to be. Hi soporific, I cannot understand how using MD's CU can cabbage the Command Interpreter... I can't either ... i must admit, the evidence is still circumstantial -- i have to do more combination tests to see if the combination of CU + RP results in AP not working everytime. It has so far. I haven't been able to do a combination yet that results in AP working. I have been able to confirm that with everything ELSE installed (except CU) and then installing RP, AP works fine. It is strange however. I am testing v2.40 to see if that gives the same result. Thanks for the feedback.
  7. AP NEWS: I have had to completely junk the new code that included MD's Cumulative Updater. The reason is that there is something in it that causes a huge problem if you then subsequently install Revolutions Pack 7. And that problem is - you can't use Auto-Patcher ever again. For some reason, Windows loses the ability to create new Virtual Machines (DOS boxes) with the environment space dynamically set. Ie, normally you can use COMMAND.COM to create a new DOS box with a set Environment Space, and i have used this extensively all the way thru AP because it uses so much space to get everything done. Now that this functionality is gone, AP is useless and will not work on your machine. I have tried to get around this, but if would need a complete re-write of the program, and that is going to happen soon anyway but i'll be switching to a GUI interface, and so this problem won't ever be there again. But that's months away. So, in the meantime, i'm still using the old code. I have managed to salvage some stuff, it certainly wasn't a complete waste of time, so they'll still be lots of new additions, but not as many as before. MD's updater is actually very very good, its a pity it causes such a bad problem to the point i have had to announce a quarantine on the updater so no-one loses the ability to use AP. Comments welcome.
  8. Isn't the file version 4.90.3000 ? The file inside the hotfix is 4.90.0.3000 -- is it supposed to be that, or is it supposed to be 4.90.3001? TAAFTU. (TAAFTU = Thanks as always for these updates)
  9. Yay. Thanks for the major update. Unfortunately i can't use it until we work out which thing in your updater is causing the problem with RP and the command.com environment switch - is there a way you can test for this? the following code works on every test machine i have made: %COMSPEC% /E:6120 /K "%LOC8%\code\AutoPach.bat" "%LOC8%" %debug% and it doesn't work on a machine with the Cumulative Updater 2.50 installed first, and then with Revolutions Pack 7.11. but this code DOES work: "%LOC8%\code\AutoPach.bat" "%LOC8%" %debug% which says to me that command.com isn't working as expected. my code simply needs to be able to set environment space dynamically, i can't get around this. This problem does not occur on any machine i've built where i've also installed Revolutions Pack (RP) so the problem isn't RP. It's only when your cumulative updater is installed first that the problem i outline above happens. Interestingly, it doesn't occur if the Updater is installed after RP. I hope this gives you some help in tracking down the problem. I've already asked Tihiy via PM if he can help with this so this won't be new to him, hopefully he's already worked it out, he's a smart fella me old sparring partner!
  10. thank you very much for your post, its good to hear you can use AP to fix mistakes by other programs. OK, i have an announcement to make ... !! DO NOT USE THIS UPDATER UNTIL ALL PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN QUARANTINED !! Quarantine Warning Details: At exactly 10:03pm AES, i discovered a critical bug in the Cumlative Updater 2.50 - If you install this, and then install Revolutions Pack 7.11, you will not be able to use Auto-Patcher (it won't work) -- this is because the Command.Com file which controls the DOS side of the OS can't use the environment switch /E:nnnn as you normally can. It is not known at this time what the exact cause of the problem is, but until we know more, you are well advised to steer clear of even downloading this critical bug infected updater. Don't even mention its name! This will result in critical system failure for all programs that rely on this feature to work. The list of known applications that are affected and are still in use in the world is the following: * Auto-Patcher for Windows 98 SE That is all.
  11. When you setup sharing in the XP machines for the directories that the Win98 machine can't see, you were informed that by using more than 12 letters, some machines wouldn't be able to see them for networking purposes. You chose to ignore that warning. Microsoft, for all its faults, at least knows when to tell you something important. The problem is how do you know that THIS warning was the one you actually needed to heed to. Go figure. There is no other way i know of to correct this problem except by biting the bullet and spending the time required to re-make the network share folders, this time using less than 12 letters. Hope this helps.
  12. Thanks for the feedback, it was interesting to hear your thoughts on the proposed GUI change. 1. The reason the next AP is taking so long is that i've had to carefully go thru everything inside MD's updater. You still get to see the realtime checking of updates, the only difference you see is that instead of "installation complete" it says that it will be completed after reboot. After wading thru 127 updates, if any need to be installed, then AP calls MD's Updater and runs it. After reboot, AP still goes thru each install to make sure it was installed. So, really, you will be hard pressed to see much difference. The modules have changed - the following have been taken out and the contents merged with the System Stability Hotfixes module: Laptop Hotfixes, Other Recommended System Hotfixes, and Rare and Obscure System Hotfixes. 2. If i do make a GUI for AP, it will work basically the same. In stead of a DOS box, you'll see a Window but hopefully the same messages you're used to seeing. The reason i need to do this is to avoid all these out of memory messages i get while testing. Its driving me nuts.
  13. my suggestion: Watery Grave it fits well with 'The Dark Side'. PS - if i win, the 5 bucks goes back into WPI development, no question as i use it quite a bit.
  14. I think i can see the problem: The WPI path is set to a different drive !! Also, why the extra "\" in the command line? Thanks for any help with this. Bumpity bump bump. This mystery ain't going away unless we solve it! No clues? Cheers man.
  15. Hi MD. I've decided to use your cumulative updater in AP, hope you don't mind. As i still wanted to keep all existing functionality, i had to go thru your installer very carefully to add an entry to the module bat file for every update that you included. I got most of them but i also uncovered a host of mistakes and other things. I hope writing this post wasn't a waste of time, i have never actually conversed with you but its not for the lack of me trying. The list of problems with this release: * Your list of updates included in the _README!.TXT file inside the installer is all wrong, please update it ASAP. * the following is a list of updates you list as being installed by your cumulative updater but in fact are not installed at all. They seem to be all obsolete hotfixes that you should remove from your list. I don't want anyone bugging me to update my Win98se hotfixes list for unnecessary stuff. The list is: 229670, 239697, 241134, 242937, 246387, 266039, 273468, 305575, 329128, 827656, 896559 * The list of updates that aren't installed fully, ie some extra files and reg entries are missing that are installed by the stand-alone installer: 942763 * There are some updates you list that are red herrings for the USER. If they try to find out about the update, they get nowhere, as there is no other information, and the number does not correspond to a microsoft KB article. We need more info please. The list is: 247583, 266039, 268064 * Other obsolete updates you list are: 928388, 929120 * Errors in list: "VBRUN5SP2" is actually "VBRUN5SP3" and that's it! I have some other questions but that's enough to start with. Please reply MD ...
  16. what tweaks thread? can't you see i'm desperately trying to avoid touching that thread in the hopes that it will just go away? seriously, thanks for the info, i will get around to updating the Tweaks pack, only about 6 months overdue ... AP NEWS: --- i've found a few more updates and a better way to install them taking less time, and that is to use the work of the elusive Maximus Decim. I've got his cumulative updater doing all the work for 127 updates which are all grouped together in the first module. This saves quite a bit of time when using AP on a newly installed OS. I'll be trying out his other packs as well, so my promise of a new AP within a week might just have been slightly precipitous, there's lots to wade thru. MD did quite well with the updater but not so well that it was a breeze to integrate. Oh well. So, i've already managed to replace over 100 files in AP with the one file, but still keeping all the functionality, ie you still get to see what updates needed installing, and AP still checks that each of them was installed correctly via the checking method. If anyone knows of any problems people have had using MDs Cumulative Updater 2.50 which he released mid December, please say something.
  17. You will get basically the same result. Doing it with UBCD means its one less step. Since you have to 'make' your own UBCD, using AP after installing with a standard Windows 98 SE cd is the easiest way.
  18. Hi there, you've had lots of replies to this, which is good, but as you can see, i'm replying to your first post, because i'm not happy with the course of the help you've received. One of the likely scenarios to answer the question: "what is wrong with my machine" is that you have a "very damaged windows" (which is one of the replies you got) but this was never followed up. You've tested the hardware, and if all the results are clean and the computer is not behaving as intended, you have a Screwed Operating System that Needs Re-Installing. In my experience, you can waste WEEKS of your life trying to fix a problem that can be solved in less than one hour. And that is re-installing the OS. It only takes one incompatible system event to crash Windows 98 or make it behave in an excruciating manner. So, please, more info on the state of the OS ... how old is it? When was it installed? How much change has it seen? Ie how many programs have been installed and uninstalled (a few, many?) -- but we only need this if you have a good reason why you'd prefer to not to re-install. As you are probably painfully aware, a week is far too long to be trying to fix Windows. Get good at re-installing the OS and you will live longer due to less stress.
  19. You said it Eck. However, i should say something on the subject ... in the short term, a new AP will hopefully be out within a week, and in the long term, i'm hoping to switch to a GUI interface. More details soon ...
  20. Hey MD, the silent switch doesn't work. Did you try it? I've mentioned this about your other "silent" switches and you've never replied. This makes me a sad panda.

  22. I think i can see the problem: The WPI path is set to a different drive !! Also, why the extra "\" in the command line? his log file for one program: My log file for one program: Thanks for any help with this.
  23. Hi Kel, How's it going? Happy New Year! I'm hoping you can help 'cause i'm stumped. I have a WPI v6.3 project that i gave to a friend and he reported that on his main machine, every app he choose to install got the red crosses. He was able to test it out on 2 other machines and it worked fine. That's why this is weird. There's nothing wrong with his DVD drive, there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with his system, he can access the files on it fine, and i even got him to confirm his system assigned the CDROM variable that tells WPI where to find the files. I've tried this DVD on at least 5 machines of varying hardware configurations and it works on all of them. He did mention that he had the most recent SP3 installed on his WinXP Pro machine and he was going to try to see if this made a difference (he was going to install sp3 on a machine that the DVD worked on and then see if the DVD still worked but he hasn't got back to me), but i can't see why SP3 would cause the behaviour i describe above. So i'm wondering what the possible causes could be ... I'm not asking for extensive help on this, just maybe an idea of where to look for problems, or things to try ... i could attach my config.js but you'll most likely find that it works, it works for me! I've tried 2 methods of launching the WPI -- using a batch file, and also using an AutoIT script. Both methods work for me, both don't work for my mate. Any ideas Kel? Cheers, Sop.
