oh goody! I just encountered one of these while testing out the new version of UBCD and i was trying to work out how to get around it automatically. i ended up setting the MaxPhysPage setting to 39999 which limits the amount of RAM Windows sees to slightly less than 1 gig which fixes the problem. It was/is a terrible hack and i was going to create something better but you beat me to it. Congratulations I will test out ASAP on a machine i knows gives that error and i will report back ... ... and it works fine. Yay !

Driver Packs for Windows 95,98/98SE,ME
soporific replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
This is it so far. They aren't any use until i release the upcoming version of UBCD but i thought you might like to see the progress ... I've tested the ATI drivers and my 9800 series Radeon was found and installed fine. I also have a NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti 200 i can test on and so i can at least confirm the system works for the majority of major brand cards! The other issue i've come across is that some modern systems need a hardware update otherwise you can't run the rest of UBCD when the desktop first loads until you install the system drivers in particular the drivers for your system bus. So i'll need to do a pack for these as well. Here's the list: Index for the Video Driver Pack for Windows 98se v1.00 __________________________________ ** DP_Graphics1.exe ** 5.35 MB ATI Radeon 9800 series ATI Radeon 9700 series ATI Radeon 9600 series ATI Radeon 9500 series ATI Radeon 9200 series ATI Radeon 9100 series ATI Radeon 9000 series ATI Radeon 8500 series ATI Radeon 7500 series ATI Radeon 7200 series ATI Radeon 7000 series ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series ** and all "All-In-Wonder" variants of the every ATI Radeon series family above. Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)
soporific replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Have you patched the COMPNTS.BAT module to install Scripting Update 5.6.0.8832 yet? If you have, can we download just that patch now w/o having to download the entire project again? (I'm assuming we'd only need to replace COMPNTS.BAT for that single fix.) Or would you prefer that we wait til the next full release? COMPNTS.BAT now has more changes than just the little bug i found. Looks like you'll have to download the UPDATE when its available. Latest News: The September 2007 FULL beta is available. I know its a big download, but for those where this doesn't matter, please try it out. It says Beta but this version is heaps better than August 2007. Trust me! September 2007 FULL Beta is now available - 255 MB The link will work in about 2 hours ... its uploading as i type. EDIT: oops, the link works while its still uploading, please wait for 2 hours after the time of the last edit of this post, otherwise you'll just waste bandwidth on a broken version. An much smaller UPGRADE version will be available tomorrow. I'm off to bed. change log: new: TriEdit - Cumulative TriEdit & DHTML Edit Control Vulnerability Fixes new: kb932590 - Unofficial TZ Environment Variable Errors Fix new: MSPaint - Unofficial MSPaint Update and Graphic Filters Pack (optional) new: Contrl98 - Unofficial Control Panel Applets Lockups Fix new: Revolutions Pack 7 by Tihiy update: 98KrnlUp - Unofficial Update for KRNL386.EXE (4.10.0.2000) update: RichEd9x - Unofficial Rich Text Controls Update (Sept 2007) bug fix: the q329048 hotfix wasn't installing due to wrong file number check value bug fix: the PNGFIX in the Manual Installs folder was broken. bug fix: HTMLHelp was looping, should now be fixed. bug fix:rootsup was looping, should now be fixed. -
Does anyone know if these NVidia drivers are able to be installed purely by the INF method ?? I don't want to include 14 MB of drivers if we need to run the setup program to install them. I don't have anything to test on which is why i'm asking ... this is for the driver packs so its for a good cause!

Driver Packs for Windows 95,98/98SE,ME
soporific replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
OK, now we immediately run into the "duplicate files" problem ... we can't just dump every single file into the one directory there are bound to be files with the same name that are completely different and the right version needs to be present for the driver to work (we have to assume this). So, i would still like to be in more control of the INF files, then we can just use C:\D1;C:\D2;C:\D3 and so on, instead of C:\Windows\Setup\D1;C:\Windows\Setup\D2;C:\Windows\Setup\D3; and so on. We will run out of string space very quick. But we are fine for now. The list so far: SiS 530 SiS 6326 Trident Blade XP-T64 All ATI cards that are supported in the Catalyst drivers package for Win9x (which is heaps, i will post a list soon) -
SED, INF, DDF file format description
soporific replied to Petr's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Eureka !!!! I've cracked this wide open. Ok, we still had to work out how to tell SETUP where the files listed in the INF were located. The way to do it is this ... 1) we are launching setup from the hard drive, so we create a folder under the setup folder called "drivers" (or whatever) and then in each INF file, we change the following [SourceDisksFiles] sis530v.drv=55 sis530v.vxd=55 sis530v.inf=55 to [SourceDisksFiles] sis530v.drv=55,drivers sis530v.vxd=55,drivers sis530v.inf=55,drivers and we dump all the drivers into <setup folder>\drivers This method also uses the addition to MSBATCH.INF of [OEMDrivers] ; Add additional driver paths for OEM specific drivers ; Ensure each entry is separated by a semi-colon ; HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion","OtherDevicePath",,"<drivers path>" That's it. I will post a full set of instructions at a later stage, but the above should give you the gist of it. Thanks to everyone who posted but especially SubMix8c and MDGx who provided the crucial elements! -
Tweaks Pack for Windows 98se v1.30
soporific replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Umm, i think i need to get v1.3 out the door - but in the meantime, let me try to help: 1) can you post a screenshot? I don't know what you are seeing here 2) It doesn't matter what you click in My Computer -- if, for example, you unchecked the C drive, this would hide the c drive from the computer (it wouldn't see it in any save menus). If this is what you want, then do it. Just leave them all checked unless you have a reason to uncheck. 3) to fix your folders do this: - set Program Files to "C:\Program Files" (without the quotes) - set Programs to "C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" (without the quotes) 4) look before you leap next time! -
Driver Packs for Windows 95,98/98SE,ME

I have a very old video card, an ASUS V3400TNT (1X AGP) which came with driver version 1.02. I later upgraded to 2.17 from the ASUS website. I've seen versions 6.31c and 31.40H elsewhere, but it wasn't clear if those are ASUS upgrades. Would I get better performance with 6.31c or 31.40H? Are these too old for your driver pack? Does this pack install the video driver automatically with UBCD? 1) Nothing is too old. In fact, the older the better as long as it is genuinely used on a current Win98se system (or one that could possibly be resurrected), and it is not natively supported in Win98se. I'm not building this pack to put every driver in the known universe in, but a good selection with a good chance of being needed in the next 5 years or so. 2) i would go with what the manufacturer says -- if they reckon 2.17 is the latest driver, then that's the one you post a link to. I am on a mission but this mission isn't to give everyone the very latest driver, its to simply get the hardware to work. If we give them the latest driver, that's a bonus. So for the purposes of this exercise lets not waste our time trying to determine which is the very latest if its not obvious. 3) Would you get better performance with 6.31c or 31.40H? Isn't it obvious ??? dude, maybe you think i'm some sort of genius that would be able to tell you just by looking at the version numbers for drivers for an 1 x AGP old video card which one is going to give you better performance -- sorry man, i just aint that good! I am gratified a little though to know you hold my intelligence in such esteem that it was possible 4) Yes, these driver packs are designed to be used with unattended boot CD or DVDs just like the ones for WinXP etc. It won't have to be my UBCD as i will post the method (as soon as its finalized!) so as long as you know what you're doing, it will be useful on any installation disc. -

thanks for this ... however, the only thing wrong with your method is that i will want to be deleting all these .cab files after the hardware installation part has finished. I suppose i could use a naming method and then bulk delete on the pattern i choose, but this is still a work-around my ignorance of INF files. i will resort to it if i must, but my preference is to understand the INF file so i can make it do what i want, rather than the otherway round. Thanks for the help though. See if you can gleen anything from the link ... how to write an INF the closet i could find was this: so assuming you had the drivers sitting in: c:\drivers\video in your example this would be : [SourceDisksNames] 55="All in Wonder 128 Driver Disk","MyVideo.cab",0 [SourceDisksFiles] vspdx.dll=55,c:\drivers\video vspp2.dll=55,c:\drivers\video vspp7.dll=55,c:\drivers\video vspp97.dll=55,c:\drivers\video but i have no idea about syntax and i've just about run out of blank CDs and i'm not getting any more soon due to extreme poverty. Driver Packs for Windows 95,98/98SE,ME
soporific replied to soporific's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
it's not a matter of consideration, i know i want to be able to dump drivers onto a UBCD and for setup to be able to find those drivers and use them to install the hardware it sees, and i've actually just cracked how to do this!! The only problem is understanding the INF files (which i would have to do anyway for a 'driver update manager') so setup finds the files listed in the INF without user interaction, so if you can help with this, please post, if not, sorry but that's all i need to know to get the project as i've outlined above going in reality. Cheers! -

i'm posting this question here as this thread contains lots of INF information ... thanks for any help! i need some help with INF files ... how can i make sure that the drivers installation is unattended ... in my test system, i have a video card that is not supported by Win98 and setup finds the INF file OK, but then setup asks for all the files the INF file refers to i know the location that the files will be in, but how do i include this info in the INF file so it can all be unattended? Thanks in advance ... i have the "How to Write an INF" guide and its not helping me with this ... i'm also only modifying an existing driver INF install file so i need to understand how it all works so i can properly modify all the INF files i come across.. -

I'm building a Win98se video drivers pack !!! It doesn't have to be strictly Win98se, but that is the system i intend using it on, i should be able to include instructions about how to add drivers to the publicly available pack. Please post your suggestions about what to include in it, please post direct links if you can. no worries if you can't. Thanks to all for the info, all the replies since my last one were excellent, i shall reveal which method i went with very soon ... The pack contains so far: 1. SiS530 VGA display driver. -
Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)

The code that adds a ProgramFiles variable to the WU installation isn't the same as the Java install. The code that determines the location of 'Program Files' is not working on your system, and i want to get to the bottom of it, if possible. Q: have you installed the Unofficial Microsoft Scripting Engines v5.7 ??? Everyone else: here's the list of outstanding issues, please advise if it is missing anything: loop problems: - DX_Media, HTMLHelp, kb937143, Servic9x, RootsUp Issues: - Unnoficial Notepad Update issues, doesn't play well with Rogsoft Notepad+, the initial solution is to make the the update optional - Java just installs update 12 without uninstalling Update 06 first - some updates that report they have been 'set to skip' don't have any way to be set to skip, eg 98KrnlUp, and kb933360 (this has now been fixed, it is only a cosmetic bug, nothing bad can happen) - the Unofficial Scripting Engine Update 5.6.0.8832 is available in the menu, but it never installs -- this is because i hadn't added this to the Optional Components module. D'OH! - MSXML 4.0 SP2 Update (kb936181) breaks MSXML in Win98 (is there anymore info on this?) do i have them all? more info on Choice.sav - this is the file that records your module choices. As soon as you make a change to the module selections, the save file is deleted. Also, you can't carry your SAV file thru different versions of AP, you have to make a new one. - i know this feature is pretty basic but i can't see how to improve it without adding more complexity to the program as it is. For the looping issues, can people also report back if the above updates DIDN'T loop on your system. Ta. -
Customizing Windows 98 setup billboard screens

I wasted a good half hour investigating how to repackage PRECOPY1.CAB & PRECOPY2.CAB but then it occurred to me to try just including the file in the Win98 directory. And it worked! So, good suggestion ... where were you when i was starting to waste that half hour? -

Well the Sun Jave Runtimes installed correctly into C:\Program Files\Java, so it seems that code translated %ProgFile% into "Program Files" while the Windows Update code did not. BTW I still have TWO Sun Java Updates (06 and 12) installed. Is it ok to take the 06 out now via the control panel "Add/Remove"? If so my C: drive could use the reclaimed space. Also, during the patching of my OS my firewall asked me to permit web access twice. I permitted it both times. I'm thinking it was during the setup of IE6 SP1 and maybe Windows Media Player, but I'm not 100% sure. Is it not possible to install all the updates without web access? I know the full IE6 setup is a huge file, almost 80MB if I recall correctly, but then the AutoPatcher August 2007 Full was more than 3x bigger (248MB). Was I correct in letting AutoPatcher thru my firewall? What if I wish someday to patch a computer with no net access? Would that require using the UBCD instead? RE: Sun Java --- i would uninstall both, and then re-install the latest one. RE: web access --- AP should run totally fine on a computer without net access. What is happening is certain setups (ie IE 6) still check for net access even though we aren't going to need anything from the net. MS has a long history of doing this, so i'm not surprised in the least. As soon as i have September 2007 ready, i shall out out a call for testers ... you should put your hand up! -

OK, i should have mentioned before, those files relate to WU_files.exe which is the Windows Update files (inside EssComp.bat). You can safely delete them, we don't need WU anyway. I was just saving a tiny bit of bandwidth for those who still feel the need to check their system to WU. but they should be installing into %ProgFile%\WindowsUpdate where ProgFile equals the current location of your Program Files folder. This variable is determined by code as it is not native to Windows 98. It seems to be installing into C:\V4 correct? If so, the code doesn't work for your system which is strange. I'll probably have some more questions but i may as well try a D drive install test first. Oh, and Auto-Patcher should definitely work if installed on another drive other than C, it just needs to be able to wrtie to that drive. I really should change this so then Auto-Patcher could be run from a CD. I know SubMix8c wants me to get around to implementing this ... i may just get around to it soon ... -

do you have Windows installed on a drive other than C: ? The code is not supposed to just install stuff onto the C drive, but onto the drive where you have installed Windows. Looks like there's a bug somewhere ... this reminds me that its been a while since i've done a test using a D drive Windows installation, so i shall set a test up and do a check on the August 2007 code ASAP. the Java and notepad+ issues i've have to have a look at the code ... i'll get to it soon, promise. -
I orignially posted this in the Customizing Windows section of the forums, but eidenk correctly suggested i post it here ... "i'm just about to release a new version of the UBCD for Win98/SE as a sort of last hurrah for the ancient thing, and i'd dearly love to do up a custom billboard screen for this." the above was the gist of the original post. I since discovered (and eidenk also helped with the info) that the files we need to adjust are inside PRECOPY1.CAB & PRECOPY2.CAB -- win95bb.ini is where the text is you can edit, and the .bin files contain the bitmaps. If i find anything else out, i will post it here. If anyone else has any pertinent info, please say something.

Wow, AP discussion has been relatively quiet ... and now its coming thick and fast ... i actually have a theory that the less problems in AP leads to less discussion, and there are some issues with August 2007 which will need to be fixed quick smart. I have not been totally ignoring AP, but to be honest, i haven't touched the code for 2 weeks (sorry Max!) but its definitely next on my to-do list. i have just cracked the last few problems with the next edition of the UBCD (custom setup billboards text!) and so my way is nearly clear to get AP focussed again. First, i will be listing all the issues that are outstanding, so as soon as this list appears, please check to see if your issue is on it. Should be up within a day or two. I will put the list in 2 places: first post, and as a message to this thread. Stay tuned !! Thanks to all the posters who have provided info in the last few days, you rock! Remember, this is the last remaining Auto-Patcher for Windows left standing so any posters should feel part of the team helping to keep it alive! -
I know!! Does this mean i get to send kudos to myself?? For those wanting to know the answer, it is: win95bb.dll & win95bb.ini inside PRECOPY1.CAB the question now is ... anyone know of a program that can edit NE files? Apps like Process Explorer say they don't support such an "obsolete" format. i can change the text of the billboards but not the appearance. I think i have to edit win95bb.dll to be able to do that. Any clues?
