[Question] - Windows xp hotfix size differences!?!
cumminbk replied to cumminbk's topic in Windows XP
thanx for your reply. yea i understand about the entire installer package deal. what i was really wondering is if microsoft had all sp2 patches somewhere that did not have this bloated installer package included with it. I have them downloaded and installed from the microsoft update site there are a total of 22meg if i manually install them with the links from the Kb articles they are 40meg total for all 31. Where can i get copies of the smaller versions? when they are automaticly downloaed from the site whrere are they placed before install?? -
halo all the way!! hope 2 comes out for pc
-
well i noticed on a fresh install of windows xp with only sp2 intergrated that windows has you install Windows Installer 3.1 and KK898461 which, installs a permanent copy of the Package Installer. Now after these updates are installed and pc is restarted 31 critial hotfixes are shown. the total size of these is 22.2 meg. now when i have these updates downloaded the size is twice that around 40 meg. why the difference in size? does installing ther permanent copy of the package installer reduce the size of ALL updates? i thought it just applied to the newest ones. Is it posable to download the smaller versions of the hotfixes that do not include the package installer in the hotfix itself? Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on. --Zxian

HOTFIXES: Windows XP SP2 & Windows 2000 SP4
cumminbk replied to Incroyable HULK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Yes i know there are hotfixes that are unoffical that you can only get by request but im talking about hotfixes that have this in the knowledge base article There are many hotfixes that may still need additional testing. some of these WMP10 hotfixes are the same way and i dont think they should be placed on the update page. Here is an example of a hotfix that has the above quote in the KB article. There are many others. KB907865 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;907865 Yea i agree KB891122 is not a update needed for the current WMP10 install -
HOTFIXES: Windows XP SP2 & Windows 2000 SP4
cumminbk replied to Incroyable HULK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Yea the hotfixes i listed are only the ones that do not need additional testing. The hotfixes you have listed need additinal testing, personal i dont want to install unstable hotfixes. There are dozens of other windows updates also availible that could be placed on the list, (like those inlcuded in Ryan's back) that address certain problems and are still in testing stages. We dont want all those hotfixes listed on this list do we? Just official hotfixes that would be seen on windows update was what i though this post was originally about. Also boooggy it seems that some of your fixes listed dont even have knowledge base articles... And this hotfix (WindowsMedia10-KB910393-x86-ENU.exe) is for windows Media center not XP... Cheers -

cumminbk replied to Incroyable HULK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I dont think hotfixes that need additional testing and are not "Stable" should be added to the hotfix list. Most of the fixes you list m1m1m1m101 are only to address particular problems with windows media player 10 or windows. If you want to add windows media player 10 hotfixes i have only found two fixes that are "offical/stable" fixes that need no more testing. KB891122 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891122/ KB892313 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=892313&SD=tech This updates windows media player to build .3901 -
Alright i tried hitman pro for a while and and i was impressed with how with the click of a button it would search for updates for Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. I was just wondering if anyone had a method where they could put the commands into a batch that could be run and would automaticly search for updates for these three programs, download them, and apply them to the programs. And prehaps even perform a scan afterward? Thoughts anybody?

Remove cmpnents\netfx\i386\netfx.cab from source?
cumminbk replied to cumminbk's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I have an XP pro system. the cmpnents folder can safely be deleted -
Just wondering if those with uA cds remove the cmpnents\netfx\i386\netfx.cab? I install a silent .Net framework 1.1 SP1 package from my CMDLINES.txt. do i still need the netfx.cab? also how many of you remove the VALUEADD folder from your XPCD. Do these folders just take up extra space that could be used for more important things? Is netfx.cab even installed when xp installs? or is it an extra optional component?

cumminbk replied to Incroyable HULK's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I agree with Sonic these updates should be included in your list HULK. I have all the updates you have listed save for GDI+, Melicious Virus Tool, and the one that fixes XP screwing up after SP2 installs (I have my SP2 slipstreamed and GDI+ and Virus Tool i apply through the registry. So i have a total of 45 hotfixes i install. -
ok but how do you know what to change it to. CD's come with there own icons that are set. where are these icons located. also can you just use the shell32.dll icons?

I would like to change the icon that is shown by my office 2003 CD currently the only icon for office 2002 appears when the 2003 cd is in the drive. It shows up correctly in virtual pc just not on my real pc. I can i change this and also how can i have a custom icon appear for the CD when i place a CD in the drive rather than a simple icon of a CD? any ideas? edit desktop.ini somehow? suggestions please.
