  1. Just wondering what the thoughts are on Sound blaster Audigy 4 or X-fi. Audigy 4 is about 50 bucks cheaper. I want a good gaming video card and something that will last 5+ years what are peoples thoughts?
  2. Where do i got spyware definitions for Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Adaware? Is there a file you can download that contains all definitions from the past and the most current? I want a method to update definition files without using the programs update feature
  3. sorry for my stupidity when you say "FavoritesResolve" is absolute an path do you mean the keys there are unique to each machine?
  4. Nevermind everyone i figured it out. Here is what you look at for others you wish to make changes. Set up the Start menu with the items you want pinned in it. (when i'm talking about pinned im talking about the items located under the user name not the items listed at the top of the "all programs" list. Once you have your pinned items configured how you like export the following keys with there values and add them to your registry tweaks for unattended installation. Works perfectly! [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage] "FavoritesResolve" "Favorites" "FavoritesChanges"
  5. 1). Ok this is what i want to do. I want to remove the E-mail link from the startmenu. (unpin it) So i would like a registry key to unchecks the E-mail box under Show on Start menu in the Start Menu propertites. I do not want to unpin all items from the startmenu so i don't want the reg edit that prevents items from being pinned to the start menu since i want the Internet link to stay on the menu. 2). I would like to add a link to a folder that would be pinned to the start menu (in place of the E-mail link). What regedit would do this? I want these things done in an unattended fashion. Is this possible? Thanks for any replies
  6. I want to disable system restore so it is not running but i want the option to turn it back on if i so choose. This tweak i use to disable system restore but the tab is also removed from my computer options. how can i disable system restore without disabling the system restore tab? ;System Restore Service [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\srservice] "Start"=dword:00000004 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr] "Start"=dword:00000004 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr\Parameters] "FirstRun"=dword:00000001 Also i install my windows media player 10 hotfixes after system restore is disabled and the hotfixes appear to install very quickly (too quickly) but when i check they are not installed at all this is the switches i use everything installed just fine before i disabled system restore and added the "/DisallowSystemRestore" switch /Q /O /N /Z /DisallowSystemRestore what are your thoughts everyone? Also would you suggest if i am disabling system restore that i add the "/DisallowSystemRestore" switch to all my XP hotfixes to speed up the install time?? thanx all!
  7. Alright i would like to disable the startup/exit music in windows using a registry key. I have been using this entry which is imported with a batch file at first boot but does not take effect. Why is this? Somehow i had this working before took it out and now i cant get it to work again... grrrr ;Disables the Music Played During Windows Startup and Shutdown [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\SystemStart\.Current] @="" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\SystemExit\.Current] @=""
  8. Here are services i disable to create my Hardware Profiles when conducting certain tasks. I find this increases computer speed by a fair amount. You will noticed a performance increase ComputerMan if you do such configurations. My Workstation: w/ LAN profile allows me to use every feature i feel the average computer user would need. Any of the services disabled there should not effect "average" users. ***Workstation: w/ LAN - (The following services are disabled for this profile) Alerter (SP2 Default = Disabled) Automatic Updates Background Intelligent Transfer Service ClipBook (SP2 Default = Disabled) Distributed Link Tracking Client Distributed Transaction Coordinator Error Reporting Service Fast User Switching Compatibility Help and Support Human Interface Device Access Indexing Service IPSEC Services Messenger (SP2 Default = Disabled) Net Logon NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing Network DDE (SP2 Default = Disabled) Network DDE DSDM (SP2 Default = Disabled) Network Location Awareness Network Provisioning Service NT LM Security Support Provider Performance Logs and Alerts Portable Media Serial Number Service Protected Storage Remote Desktop Help Session Manager Remote Registry - Not in XP HOME. 9. exporting those registry keys do not work. any other ideas?
  10. i suggest you use hardware profiles to increase speed if you have specialized tasks you want to complete. on my system i have 5 profiles setup Workstation: w/o LAN Workstation: w/ LAN Game Mode: w/ LAN Game Mode: w/o LAN Emergency Hardware Only (like a custom "safe" mode) thoughts from others?
  11. I dont want to use it for other computer i want to save my profile so i can hold onto it so whenever i do a fresh install i do not have to put together the profile every install.
  12. Wow thanks for the fast reply Oh really!! so if i export this key ones my profiles are complete and import it everything should be set up correctly?
  13. I have created a few hardware profiles for my system. I just found out about this feature and think its awesome. Is there a file these profile settings are saved to that i can hold on to so i can copy it over when i do fresh installs?
  14. 1). I add this line to my batch file which runs during windows setup. I have been told that it frees resources. I use winrar to open zip and cab files anyway. ECHO Disabling Windows Built-In .Zip and .Cab Support REGSVR32 /U /S zipfldr.dll REGSVR32 /U /S cabview.dll 2). Also if you disable the windows start music and shutdown music it will speed up the boot process. I find the music annoying also. 3). After i have windows installed and all programs and drivers and other applications on the system i use TuneXP, google it. TuneXP has one function that i find very useful called Ultra-Fast booting (rearrange boot files). It places the but files on the hard disk in optimal layout. These are just three things i use that i do not believe have been mentioned yet.
  15. i suggest these tweaks are added ;Prevents Windows File Protection from Reporting Errors at Startup After Multiple Unattended Hotfix Installs (WFP is still enabled only warning prompts are disabled) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "SFCDisable"=dword:00000004 ;Changes Time Interval Between System Restore Points to Once a Week (Default is Once a Day) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore] "RPGlobalInterval"=dword:00093a80 (They must be imported at first boot)
  16. This discussion has really come down to one of services. A few users have already done this but i am wondering if other users with greater knowledge of XP would like to put together short lists of what services they run and why and what services they dont run and why for the benefit of the rest of us. Also if a service is sent to manual does it use resources in a idol state???
  17. what are suggestions on switching services you may use rarely to manual instead of leaving them at automatic or disabling them? I hear that some services dont "turn on" when they are used in manual mode and some services dont "turn off" after they are not longer being used. It would be awsome if windows could have all services set at manual and they would turn on and off only as needed.
  18. I am loving this post. Great information keep it up. what are thoughts about disabling this service DNS Client Any ideas how much resources are eaten by system restore?
  19. I was wondering if anybody had registry tweaks for programs such as Zonealarm CCleaner Realplayer Firefox Quicktime AOL messenger Adobe Winamp Divx i have put together some of my own but i am having trouble knowing what keys do what. IF anybody has a list they have already put together or are using and are willing to share please post.
  20. Hey i was wondering if the newest version of WGA no included the notifications stuff. I downloaded and extracted both versions and this appears to be the case. thoughts?
  21. i would like to set all my file types for all my media programs, winamp, real player, wmp10 ect through the registry so i don't have to set them up after each fresh install. what keys do i need to change to set file types. any suggestions on the easyest way to do this?
  22. Your on the right track with the indexing service disabling it will increase performance very much. with no negative effects. double click my computer - right click main hard drive - go to properties, and uncheck allow indexing service to index this drive for faster file searching. This majorly increases performace and has very little effect on slowing file searches.
  23. but i guess you can overcome any of this by just slipstreaming sp3 into a pirate copy of xp...
  24. Just wondering if anybody knows or has any ideas on whether SP3 will have WGA built into it. EDIT: meaning that only genuine copies of windows can install sp3
