I may be new here, but I think it is a great idea. MSFN already commands great respect in the community, and those of us who have found it find out very fast what a great resource it is. The folks here have been valuable to me in my quest for answers and collecting that wisdom in a central place makes wonderful sense. I'm sure each of us has collected the tweaks and bits and bobs that have made our lives easier, and doing that in a more formal way is a way to help more folks. It would also help those who wander in looking for stuff, only to be told to search for it. Well, I know that searching is very time consuming and still I do it. Some are not so patient so they ask what has already been answered somewhere. Collecting the info in a more centralized place would facilitate that function and save those of us who try to explain it to those searching! The utilities and apps developed here already enjoy followings and they each have their advantages and disadvantages (okay, not so many disadvantages...lol). Having them branded with an MSFN moniker would give them panash. I vote yes. And will help if I can. Thank you all here, by the way. DD =====

Office 2003 Did not silent Install
DonDamm replied to PerfectSwanson's topic in Application Installs
You're kidding, right? ....Have you reaed the unattended guide yet? Where ever did you get the idea that T-12 was a good place to try to install MS Office?? Please excuse my incredulity if you are seroius, but your question shows that you have done little reaseach or reading. Most of the folks here have had to to a lot and really don' fell like repeating what has already been well documented. In a nutshell, the best place to do an install of Office is using RunOnceEx which executes AFTER Windows has installed and AFTER it reboots. Check the forums and the guide for the switches (for office it will be /qn for a silent install) and consider doing an administrative install point with all the updates and SP1 integrated. This method, however, will NOT place an MSOcache folder on your disk, so any further updates will require the original install disk, or you could just update the admin install point and use that. Clear? Hope that helps. -
Whoa! I never thought of using resource hacker there! Fantastic! Anyway, there is a difference in Win versions. The logo in 9x maxes out at 120x120, according to MS the max for XP is 172x172 and should be square!! Really, I'm not kidding. This is from KB314472 for WinXP (it is similar for Win2K) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;314472 ========== "Part D: Brand Your System Manually 1. To add support information to the Windows Start menu, create an Oeminfo.ini file by using Windows Notepad, and then copy it to the Windows\System32 folder. When you use Oeminfo.ini, the values in the [General] section and a Support Information button are displayed on the General tab of the System Properties dialog box. The following is an example of the Oeminfo.ini file: [General] Manufacturer = MyCompany, Inc. Model = Brand X Processor SupportURL = http://www.mycompany.com LocalFile = C:\Winnt\Web\LocalFilename.htm [support Information] Line1= For Technical Support: Line2= to obtain updated drivers or for information on frequently Line3= asked questions, visit the MyCompany technical Line4= support web site at: Line5= Line6= http://www.mycompany.com/techsupport. NOTE: The [General] and [support Information] sections of the Oeminfo.ini file are required. Replace the manufacturer, model, support URL, and local file information with your company information. Be careful not to leave any trailing spaces after your company name. 2. To add your logo to the System Properties window in the Control Panel, replace the sample Oemlogo.bmp file included in this OPK with your company logo (bitmap image) in the Windows\System32 subfolder. NOTE: Your Oemlogo.bmp logo must be square and must measure 172 by 172 pixels. If your bitmap image is smaller than this specification, it appears centered in the rectangle. If it is larger than this specification, part of it might appear to be cropped under certain font and screen resolutions, or it might not appear at all. Refer to "Chapter 6: Advanced Customization Topics" in the OPK User Guide for more information about how to brand. For additional information about creating Oeminfo.ini files, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 216347 HOWTO: Test and Modify the Logos in an OEM Preinstallation ============== I don't know about you, but when I tried that it cut off the top of Sun Tzu head in the pic I was using. As to why your oemlogo isn't showing up, I don't kknow. Try a smaller version, try a different picture, try reducing the number of colors (256 works best). To make a given color or background transparent in PSP, just go to Colors/Set Palette Transparency... and then choose which color you want to be transparent. You must be in 256 colors to do this.

Acknowledgement Card, Please!
DonDamm replied to MOONLIGHT SONATA's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I think it's a great idea. My question is, will a flash movie run at stage or will it be an executable? It really is a good idea for using that interval and it would look professional, too. I like it. ) -
The quotes only make a difference if your value data has a space in it. for example under [userData] FullName="Sun Tzu" OrgName="The Dynasty" ComputerName=Sword I could have just as well written "Sword" and it wouldn't have made any difference. However, without the quotes around "Sun Tzu" The name would have been rendered as "Sun" and ignored the "Tzu". Glad you got it working.

Hmm Interesting! Thanks! )

Im back, with a new app in the works

Hey, thanks for this. This will be perfect when you need to do other things in the PE. I like and will check it out soon. ) -
I think what he is asking is can you use more than on CD so that when you have files copying over during the text mode phase (not T-12), it will stop and ask you for the 2nd CD and then continue copying stuff onto the hard disk. I think the answer is no, in general, but it may be possible as long as you have a reboot command on the 2nd CD. I don't know how this might interfere with MS setup routine, but it continues from the hard disk after reboot. If it needs to access the CD anytime after, you should probably swap it again. Now, the obvious question is why not just use a DVD? The drives cost no more than CD drives these days and you don't have to go through any hassle. I know, your target computer has no DVD. So, bring one with you and swap it temporarily, or encourage your recipient to take the plunge and invest like €20 in a DVD drive.

Actually, there have been some really good posts on this recently. I'd do a search first. Also, check in the WPI section. there were some brilliant instructions there for just what you are looking for!

A question for the experts(YOU)to make sense of.
DonDamm replied to flo's topic in Networks and the Internet
I don't see a problem. For 1. "Prorietary" seems completely wrong as the very nature of proprietary precludes interoperablility. So, my instinct says "Diverse". For 2. I first tried to order the phone call. That alos seems straightforward: E. Modular telephone cord A. Dial tone C. Telephone number G. "Please dial a 1......" D. Receptionist B. Extension look up F. Confirming conversation From what I see that matches the OSI model quite well. Now, as to the value of these questions as a test, that is another thing altogether. That these questions can be answered without any reference or knowledge about the OSI model means its not a very good test. give the teacher an F for test writing!!! -
Just a quick look at it and it doesn't look too bad, but I'm curious about a couple of things. First, I take care of the Windows Tour, and AutoUpdates in the registry tweak file which I apply near the end of my RunOnceEx.cmd. You can find those tweaks and variations here on the board. Removing the US keyboard is a bit trickier. Usually it is put in there in addition to whatever locale you choose. This is true for German Windows which I install often enough. I noticed you put in the British locale, so the British keyboard and other settings do appear, yes? Administrator is a default account built into windows. If you want to create a different account (recommended) there are two ways, but I use the tried and true CreateUser.cmd at T-12 in cmdlines.txt CreateUser.cmd @echo off net user SaxoVTR mypassword /add net localgroup Administrators SaxoVTR /add net accounts /maxpwage:unlimited REGEDIT /S autologon.reg EXIT AutoLogon.cmd Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "DefaultUserName"="SaxoVTR" "DefaultPassword"="mypassword" "AutoAdminLogon"="1" In [Gui Unattended] I have ....AutoLogonCount=3 You only have AutoLogon=1 Try upping that to 3. There are other things you can do, but that should run fine like it is.

Sure, when you use the MS utility CDImage it looks for duplications and removes them. When you copy over to your hard disk many times it will be copying over two copies of some files instead of just a hardlink.

Don't be disappointed. It means folks were interested. I created my own single 11- in-1 CD for Office 2003, but could use that for the UAI. for that I made an admin install point. I don't want to run it as the first thing in my RunOnceEx. I defrag first, then put in TweakUI ans then a few other things before I tackle Office. However, I may learn a few things by going through the process. thanks for the post! )

I'm not sure if avatarless posts are allowed here!!! lol ) There are a whole bunch of characters here on the prowl for n00bs. Some of them will tell you to search search search! Which actually is a good idea, even if it takes a while. It is easy to get side-tracked here, so watch out!!! Oh, and btw, WELCOME!! What a kick to see you here, elf!! lol

I would suggest doing a quick format of the C: drive prior to putting in the Unattended Installation. That way it will install there and leave D: alone. I've done that for a friend and it is the simplest way. Yes, there are ways to deal with the partition, but you want to remove the existing installation if there is one so there won't be any conflicts or surprises, like installing it onto the D: drive!!! There are many utilities to do that for you like Partition Magic disks, Partition Manager, ERD Commander (the one I like), and there are many others out there, free and not.

The problem as I understand it has more to do with Windows update and they way it determines things. The same thing is true with the Windows 3.1 installer. It says I need it, but you can clearly see the uninstall folder under the Windows folder. Go figure. MS are updating their update services almost as I post here. Don't worry about it if you have them installed. The point is to be protected and up-to-date. They'll get it right sooner or later! )

First, Coleburg, you cmdlines.txt and your RunOnceEx.cmd should be in the $oem$ folder, NOT in the install folder. Second, if you haven't downloaded cmdow.exe and placed it in your $$\System32 folder then it won't be there to hide the window. This is mainly cosmetic so you don't have to have it, but if you don't then remove the line "cmdow @ /HID" (or put a REM in from of it) from the RunOnceEx.cmd file. Third, remove the [GuiRunOnce] lind from your winnt.sif file as you don't need it. Fourth, in the example you gave with Kaspersky you forgot it put closing " quotes after it. Fifth, you seem to have two locations (install and apps) with the software you want to install. Consolidate that into one folder and use that folder only. Sixth, check your RunOnceEx.cmd all they way through for integrity and then execute it. go to the registry and see if everything got put in to the key correctly and and then you can delte all the entries. Lastly, you need to do some debugging. When you post here you should be using the [ code] tags. Please do so. It will be easier for us to separate out. Thanks. )

Hmmm. Let's see. $2000 for removal, that leaves $8000. The IRS will require taxes on that and I presume they are not destitute so one-third is about normal, so lop off another $3000 for the Fed, and between 5% adn 10% for State taxes, so now it's around $4000-4500 left. The last I looked tuition room and board and most universities was running upwards of $15,000 - $20,000 (some are more but I'm being conservative) per year, so for 4 years she'll need......$60,000-$80,000. Throwing the pain of removal (it is no fun, believe me!) and extraordinary expenses and she'll still be a minimum of about $55,500 short (assuming of course no rise in tuitionover the next four years!!! Doesn't seem like a good business to me!

Anti-Virus to become obsolete.
DonDamm replied to rhythmnsmoke's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
What you've presented is a very interesting and alluring idea. I think all here would welcome it. What we all don't have a lot of is extra time to give to everything that comes down the pike. That's why all of are interested if we can get our hands on it. You want our time. If you're not promoting snake oil, fine. But we have no way to judge that with what you've presented us. so, you just want to practice answering the inevitable questions. From the sound of it, you know a certain amount, but either don't know the depths or are unwilling to talk about them. That's what folks here are interested in. How it works. You've alluded to it, talked about a "binary search engine", said you don't maintain any sort of database or "white/black" lists, mentioned complicated algorithms, and lots of very good sounding buzz words. What you haven't done is tell us how it integrates with the computer's architecture (surely divulging this couldn't compromise either the security or your products position), the software architrecture, or anything else. I personally don't give a hoot if some gov't geek thinks its super duper. I want to know how it works. I know how most AV engines works and in some limited way I know how Windows works. So far you haven;t told me anything, but promised that it is great and you've spent a lot of energy telling me what it is NOT. that's not the same thing. When I was your age I'd already spent a few years selling advertising to pay for my tuition. That was an education. You may think you're not trying to "sell" something, but that's is exactly what you are doing. Yes, you are being very professionel about your presence, and that is good, but please understand that it is your approach that has set off a lot of folks here. Regardless of your product. You didn't come in and say, "Hey guys. I work at this neat company and we're working on a neat product which I like to practice presenting to you. What do you think?" You may have a computer degree and I may not, but you still have some things to learn about people. Have you read Schneier on security? Without any way to evaluate what you claim (other than a live demo which is fine as far as it goes), I'm quite certain he would label you a snakeoil salesman. Many of us have been there, done that. It doesn't mean your product isn't what it says it is, and I think most here would like it to be what you say it is. The product will speak for itself. What we want is more real information, not buzz, and the chance to actually fiddle with it. Anything less is asking for our time without rewarding it with more than a ooo isn't that great I wish I could have it feeling. Regardless of your calm, you have nevertheless spoken down to a number of people here and that doesn't go over too well. It also reveals your youth and lack of experience. Maybe your willing to reveal more than you have, I don't know. I've been testing software for 10 years now and been periphally involved with security for a rew of those years. I think you'd be surprised at some of the folks behind the nicks you see here. I never heard you mention an NDA, many here would be willing to sign one to get their hands on a copy just as I would. However, you don't seem to be in a position to offer anything of the sort. I suggest you go to your superiors and ask for more latitude in your authority before you ask us for more of our time. -
I like I like. Now you've screwed up two months work, lol!!! I've almost finished my project to build a UA DVD for a friend which is topping out over 3.5 GB and it is working great! Now, I have to go back and redo everything.... (okay, not really, but you've insipired me to try something completely new. )
-
It's clever, but in the long run not really very useful. Just bells and whistles. If I've done a successful burn, the last thing i want to do is to possibly mess it up. I'm quite content with a non-destructive permanent marker! ) It cool though!

Yes, I have been following it and other aspects for a while. I truly think the enterainment moguls need to rethink their business model and strategies. They've only been hurting themselves by treating their customers as criminals and thieves.

Oh, I don't I don't!!! I am, however, a beta tester........ )

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0.0.359

Actually, don't wait. It is a better implementation with more features and controls. You can easily turn off what you don't want.
