  1. for those of you who did not understand, i want to know how to shrink the text size on my start button for those who need an image (which wont change anything because its just showing how the text makes it look ugly): screenshot
  2. hey everyone. i just got my new dell, and they messed up the visual styles a bit by making everything bigger. I went through the display settings, and set everything back to its default value (i love having 2 computers) and once i did it, everything went back to normal.... except the start button. i looked all over online for any advice but i couldn't find anything. if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. The buttons text and image are distorted, whichs means that it is being stretched by some setting somewhere in the OS. thanks Sven
  3. I agree with Shindo_Hikaru. starting at the age of 10, i spent every new years eve wondering what it was about. yay, its a new year, woop de do..... christmas actually represents something. I really dont care about the gifts, its the part about being together and having fun with family.
  4. Hapenned with me when i was playing the god-father. turns out my psu wasn't giving out enough juice, and everything rebooted. as said before we need all the system specs
  5. I guess if they fixed their themal grease problem on the heat pipes the computers wouldn't get so hot, and they wouldn't have to do this. Everything fixes itself in the then.....
  6. I had a D-link router and i used to block packets from my brothers computer so he could get off the internet. theres a setting somewhere (cant remember becuase i changed from d-link to linksys) that blocked all ip traffic from a certain ip. i know it can be done, i just cant remember how, or if there was a time on it. i'll look farther when i hook up my d-link router later to get some settings.
  7. really? i never used crossover cables to connect my 2 routers together....
  8. Turning off the firewall doesn't so much in the case of a router. since there are many computers sharing a single ip, the router doesn't know what to do with traffic that is sent to a single port. routers are firewalls no matter what becuase of NAT. If he wanted to do a passthrough, he would have to forward traffic on the port he wants through the first router to the 2nd one, and then at the 2nd one do another port forward to the computer that needs it.
  9. i use DD-WRT, and havent had a single problem since. theres only been once bug so far, and its setting up teh wan port as a lan port through the gui, but it can be done by telneting in.
  10. an easy solution would be the wireless bridge as said before. i would suggest buying a single port one (like those advertised for use with the XBOX/PS2/etc, then connect it to a lan port on your switch. This will create a bridge between the networks, and will allow you to keep teh same ip address range. Another way to to it (with the hardware shown) is to replace the switch with the router, then use a single port ethernet bridge (as stated before) just to connect the MCE Pc to the wireless network. this would also make your network more efficient, as it removed the bottleneck at the wireless bridge (which runs at 54 Mbps). The way you have your network set-up in the diagram, Pc1, Pc2, and Pc3 have to share a 54Mbps connection to the router, and the MCE Pc gets its own 100Mbps connection. Pc1, Pc2, and Pc3 will connect between eachother at 100Mbps. If you set up your network like in way 2 (paragraph 2) then it will allow the 3 computers (pc1, pc2, and pc3) to have a 100Mbps connection to the router (and between each other), and MCE Pc will have a complete 54 Mbps connection to itself. Also, method 2 will allow you room for expansion if you want to add a laptop because the 54 Mbps is shared between all the computers on the network. This will further reduce the speed between the 3 computers and your router, creating bottlenecks and problems. if anything seems confusing (which it might be) send me a PM and i can help make stuff clear.
  11. what operating system are you running? if your running windows xp pro or 2000 pro then it's a problem with your security settings. there are 2 ways to fix this. this is the long and more secure way: you have to add every user on your network onto that machine, and have the same password on both computer. this will remove the authentication problem. the short way is to turn on the guest account, and since the guest is in the "everyone" group, guests from outside the network can access your shares. the 2nd one should be a quick way to fix your problems, because you should only have to turn on the guest account. everything else should be set up properly
  12. if you connect all your routers together using the Lan ports (and have nothing on the wan ports) they will all act like different computers on the network. you have to give them different ips, and have only one of them as the DHCP server (if your using one). once you have your big multi-pc lan set up (with only one wan port entrance), you just have to forward the port to the ip, and everything will sort itself out. (or it should, it did for me. if it doesn't work talk to gamehead200, he told me about this)
  13. I'm almost 100% sure it is, I just have to find a way to fix it or update it. I might just remove it to make everything work again.
  14. I reinstall everything. I started making unattended cds 5-6 months ago, but my system just changes too often for me to have a concrete install cd. I would use imaging, but it’s too late. Either way, I format around every year-year and a half, so all I really so is put it to its basic original state, then install the programs I need (no games, etc) Works for me, and it's something to do while I'm working on my homework (hey, 3 hours without computer distractions, it’s great )
  15. well, where i live i know you can buy a p3 computer running at 700 mhz for 58$ if you want to get better... you'll go over. speakers (cheapest ive seen 20 canadian) keayboard + mouse (20 canadian) all this is at the same store, what will burn you is the dvd rw, which arn't included with teh cheap p3s
  16. ok, thanks. im alraedy using uphclean for another problem (doesn't seem to work for me) and this problem is for all the profiles. i'll see if i can log out with the unused account, and if it works, i'll copy everything over.
  17. After running my OS for 17 months without a format, I have reached the point when Windows is unstable. I know I should reinstall windows and all that, but I’m waiting for my laptop to arrive. It’s on its way, should be here in 3-4 weeks. So once that happens, I’m formatting and everything. This is my problem: when I click logout, the computer does nothing. I tried to close programs I don’t need then try, and it's still locked up. I'm forced to log out using the task manager (which works on the first try). What could be causing this problem, and is there a way for me to fix it? I also have no problems at the welcome screen shutting down, so it’s something that loads with the user. Also, this seems to have happened around the time I installed a Bluetooth, so that might have broken Windows. Thanks a lot, I’m willing to try anything
  18. alright, so i looked on the internet after my weeks of work from school, and found a new project for me to do. idk if you've seen them, their shufflephones. now, i already own a 3rg gen big ipod, so this will influence the following question. should i get an ipod nano for this, or an ipod shuffle. firstly, i'm not sticking to that plan 100% i might by a set of headphones that go behind the ears, and just attach it in the back becuase i'd want to keep the cable to use the headphones later. i might do the mod, and have it hidden in the headphones, but now that i think of it, i might look like a freak with a huge set of headphones. so tomorrow im gonna go check out headphones and see what i can do. either way, here's my idea. i want to mount either an ipod shuffle, or an ipod nano to a set of headphones. now, the big question, which one do i get? points to remember - it wont be my main mp3 player, i have a a regular ipod for that. - it has to be durable - price is no issue, i'll pay the extra 30$ for a nano - i have a 14 gig library, so i need to make a playlist either way - i will either buy a 1 gig shuffle, or a 2 gig nano - the nano will only have 2 playlists max if i get it so tell me what you think. i personally think i should get the shuffle, becuase with the right playlist, all the songs that come up will be good.
  19. i know, i saw that a while ago, but i also need to have the amount of cds those people have. im looking for a relationship between number of cds and number of mp3s (well, see if there is one in this day in age)
  20. Hey everyone, yea, i know i havent been online lately, iv been occupied with school and other activities that have cut into my msfn time. yea, so im gonna try to become another good member of the msfn comunity. (whne i got on, i had 30 000 new posts ) Anyways, this is the question how many cds do you own (actual music cds, not mp3 cds) and how many mp3s do you have on your computer. This is for a school math project on statistics, and your imput will be greatly appreciated. i check This poll from 2004, but i need the amount of cds they own for it to be usable. Thanks alot Sven
  21. looking good. i like what i see. but does it work?
  22. lol, sweet. sounds like my english class (nooooo must stop thinking.... cant bring this to a computer forum, ahhhhhhh. accusations!!!!!) sorry, iv been brainwashed
  23. oh boy, a look at my future physic course. im having enough problems understanding circular motion
  24. im shopping around to buy one. i have a lot of time though. about alienware, that was my first idea, but then it would have cost me 500$ in taxes and shipping, so im not buying one of those lol. i also posted this as a general question for everyone, because not many people know the high end laptop companies. everyone thinks desktops. Examples, alienware are top of the line gaming machines, dells can sometimes go crazy, dont ever buy a compaq desktop, and other examples i cant think of right now. the problem is when you want to buy a laptop; there's less information out there (well, except on that site which im checking after this post). hopefully this thread will be able to help anyone whos wondering "where should i buy my laptop".
