And free may also means open-source.

Working with 1.2. I also wanted to say, 1.3 installer could not be extracted with UniExtract1.2. And, indeed, 1.3 does not work with this player.

Thanks for the news, gonna try that.

If this is a windows desktop, would you mind telling me what you are using to display the Console on your desktop ? I know of VirtualConsole for Avedesk but you don't seem to be running it. Yes it is a windows desktop The console i'm using is called console You can find it here Thanks a lot. Working really nice. NB: if you have some transparency problems, edit the xml file, <transparency ...>fake</transparency> with <transparency ...>alpha</transparency>. I guess the former one is interesting with win9x/<NT5.

actually you can remove system restore service, and PDFCreator (Version 0.92-0.93) still keep working without any problems, at least it works for me. I'd swear I also used PDF printers with that service removed. Gonna re-use a VM soon.

Nice litestep theme. Also, I see you're using Avedesk. Don't you have any z-order (the order of the windows, i.e. which one is one top of which) problem ? If you don't could you post your config ?? Thanks. And btw, what are you using for the infos displayed on the left ? B)

@faf4life, although I wouldn't have used this style, I have to say 1-you're listening to good music 2-you've clearly worked on your desktop 3-and it makes a whole thing that is looking good.

nuhi, doesn't foobar > NUL work ? -
.net anyone ? @Cygnus, I thought you were two years younger.

Just tried ZXian hosting in Maxthon and it works perfectly. And I ticked one box in Maxthon options (under advanced, this is the last one "free memory regularly"). Maxthon was in task bar but even without this, mem usage was down to 5MB. edit : mem usage is "Util mémoire", VM Size is "Taille VM".

Why the hell have I subscribed to this topic ? I'm really busy with scholl now (and this will continue during 2 or 3 years) but guys, stop! Does anybody try to understand what the other is saying ? IE is the most secure browser. All you have to do is remove support for ActiveX, java, javascript, vbs, set security zones and everything else. Come on, you can't say something is more secure than something else when it comes to this level : one day Opera/FF is more secure, then a flaw is discovered in Opera/FF and FF/Opera gets more secure until a flaw is dicovered in it. And it's also a matter of settings. Now, about memory usage, reproductible benchmarks and tests ? Last time I benchmarked windows installations in VMWare, I tried each set at least 2 times, stopped everything else on the computer, wait before running ProcessExplorer and lots of other small things. One of the point is I didn't use windows's task manager to measure system usage. When benchmarking, think about this. Extensions and in-place functionnalities ? An extension will certainly take more resources than an in-place functionnality (for the same or nearly the same code),... it's impossible to avoid. But then, sometimes you won't get the feature you want and you'll use an extension. And WTF is wrong with that ?? You need developpers to get a software to work. You can't do everything, you have to do choices. Moreover it depends on what you want to get in the end. And one thing : FF is by essence more customizable. Open-source just makes there's nothing you can change. Sorry Jeremy. And one last thing : Being more customizable does not mean it is easier to customize. Does anybody enjoye digging through thousands and thousands of extensions ? Sorry crahak. I'm really under the impression many people are 13 here (@Cygnus and TD, ). PS: who's gonna start the "I'm adult enough to discuss seriously about topics" war now ? PS2: NT -> moves pages from RAM to swap even with 1GB of unused ram -> much slower when trying to access these pieces of data. But still fast enough, don't misunderstand me (maxthon nmay have 50MB of used memory, there's still 350MB of paged data!). When comparing XP with 2k, people did not think "hey, my computer does not have enough ram", but instead started wondering what the hell MS developpers had done with this OS. However, this is getting incredible here. As a part-part-part-part-part-part-time developper, I know that mem usage can grow very quickly when you a GUI (having the possibility to move a bar from top to bottom of the window for example!) I'm sure some people here are comparing usage on 32bits systems with usage on 64bits/32Bits with PAE, without knowing what it implies!

Of course it does. In the installer, is everything correctly set ? If it is, then it's a problem with the installer, not with windows.

Was reffering to new installer : http://www.bleddyn.co.uk/tux/7z442.exe *far too busy, sorry*

Huh? A method of what? I was just showing the difference between the two browsers. As DigeratiPrime said, it is possible to trim one's working set. But this does not only happen with minimizing. You can call a function from win32's API to get the same effect.

Yesterday, I searched some things on memory usage as shown in Task Manager. On a page explaining the numbers show by this app, I read the on in "Commit Charge : Total" was the size of the virtual memory. See this screenshot: So I have 2.5GB of virtual memory though I only have a 512MB swap file. :/ 2GB of physical RAM + 2.5GB of virtual memory makes 4.5GB. This needs PAE. As I shown just before, PAE makes you loose some memory with pointers. Lost is around 1/3. A quick calculation shows that 4.5GB with PAE is just like 3.3GB without : 1.2GB difference! This went so high because ONE day, ONE SINGLE day, I've used lots of memory and XP increased virtual memory size (which was stupid because I still had lots of free memory) And now, the reason why this does not happened under XP SP1a : the install with XP SP1a is a sort of test. Moreover, I've been too lazy too install drivers so I don't use it and I windows never had any reason to increase VM size. At least I now know that VM size is not resetted upon reboot.

Remove /S, the installer will load your ini file. Make sure, the boxes are properly checked.
-
@Jeremy, errr...... Mem Usage is not a reliable method. I think Private Bytes is more reliable (not sure though). (btw, tell me the number of the box (lines+rows) to tick in Task Manager, I don't know how this is called in french)

Yes : in HKCU not HKLM... Shell is session-dependant; it is not set for all accounts.

Tried on another computer ?

My mother's desktop! Yes, I managed to make my mother use AveDesk and Rainlendar! Coming next : new background, new visual theme. PS: Alexandre is my brother, and I wrote the note.

On the desktop contest, I've seen many different wonderful apps but I did not found any place on msfn with them. The goal of this topic is to create a place where people can share them. And in fact, it doesn't need to be an app. It can also be a plugin (for LS for instance), a desklet, docklet, a shell extension or even a theme. Just write the name, a quick description with a link, a screenshot, a comment if you have any and if it still developped (and the price if it is not free...) exemple: [Docklet] Mail Checker by Andreas Verhoeven Checks emails from any pop server, multiple accounts, labels can be edited, runs in AveDesk. Maybe handles IMAP, not sure. Seems to be unsupported now. Download@WinCustomize.org Your turn.

Please set the "restore removed components" guide sticky!
Camarade_Tux replied to Francesco's topic in nLite
No I don't think that's the guide I was talking about. It had specifics instructions on how to restore each service/component. http://www.uawiki.org/doku.php?id=wxp:reduce:restore That's the only guide I know of. But it's a shame dial-a-fix is not in it! Kill the guy who wrote that! -

-> exp(i*2*pi*) = cos(2*pi) + i*sin(2*pi) .... no, that not the correct thing.... -> http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=77011 (I searched for "dial a fix", but this returned no result so I tried "daf" which is "dial a fix" abbreviated.) -
Yesterday I made a new CD and tried to keep bluetooth and the bth* files. There is no bth* file on a XP SP1 CD, and the inf from the bluetooth driver of my friend refers to them. So you need SP2 for them I think. I thought "Advanced newtorking pack" for XP (it's an MS update) was enough : it contains most network updates that come with SP2 (Wireless network security, ipv6, MS P2P network...) So it wasn't an nlite problem. (which makes me wonder how somebody can make a driver [and it's not that recent] that can only install on system with XP SP2. )

Thanks. Making a new iso with it.
