  1. in regards to updating virus defs ... it's really quite simple. 1. Go here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...ges/US-N95.html 2. Download file named something like: 20050602-024-i32.exe 3. Name file whatever you want. Example: SARC.EXE 4. Use simple switches to update defs silently. Example: SARC.EXE /qn The above switch will update it completely silent. I use that on our customer's computers at work. It really helps out when scanning for viruses. I just make sure to update sarc.exe once a week. edit: In case I wasn't clear enough, this is ONLY for updating VIRUS DEFINITIONS. Nothing more.

  3. That is correct. I should have mentioned that. BTW, when the Found New Hardware wizard pops up, I just have to click next and it auto-installs the drivers. It's not like Windows can't find the drivers or anything. It's pretty retarded, actually. :\ From what I've read, I need to disable the PnP service in order to disable that popup. Any way to keep a service turned off during the installion and then turn it back on after everything is done?
  4. Whenever I install Daemon Tools or Alcohol, I get that "Found New Hardware" wizard. Is there any way to completely disable that prompt? And then re-enable it after installation? I'm hoping it's just a simple reg hack, but I haven't been able to find anything on MS's site. I used nLite to remove a bunch of drivers, but I made sure to leave in SCSI and RAID drivers. That should be all I need, right? If anyone would know how to code an auto-it script that will look for the Found New Hardware wizard, that'd be cool too. Must be in If-then format, though. I may use the WPI script on a computer where the found new hardware wizard doesn't come up.

  8. hmm... I think I got it fixed. I copied over the following files: wmp.dl_ wmp.in_ wmp.oc_ wmpasf.dl_ The WMP10 Slipstreamer seemed to work just fine. And when I started up nLite, it read my disc as having WMP on it. So hopefully my problem is solved. I'll report back here after I test out this disc.
  9. I have another unattended disc, which is the exact same version of Windows ... sp2 w/EXACT same hotfixes. Which files do I need to copy from unattended disc with WMP9 to the disc without it, in order to have WMP9 on my most recent disc? I really don't want to have to go through nLite again. I'm afraid I won't remember what settings I used and I may wind up with a disc that's too big.

  13. DMCA is the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. I suppose that my business law major has absolutely no relivance here, since after all, I am just a stupid newbie. I'll go ahead and let you google DMCA and read up on it, as opposed to citing the lines that pertain to your question.
  14. Dunno if it's been posted yet ... but I used the custom MSI/MST (whichever flavor you prefer), and I got the activation window when I first started photoshop. To disable the popup window, I copied over the activation data (as the thread starter posted), and then added the following to the registry. I tried it without adding this to the registry, and I still got the activation prompt on first load of photoshop. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Adobe\ALM\B2B86000] "ActivationType"=dword:00000002 "ActivationStatus"=dword:00000001 I didn't get an activation prompt when I started Photoshop.
  15. JRE and Firefox are freeware. I don't know about that antispyware one, though. Firefox is also open source, so you most certainly don't need to worry about that. I can assure you that there is nothing in the DMCA that would legally prevent you from releasing your own packages ... as long as they don't require any hacking. However, there could be other copyright laws out there, but I highly doubt they'd apply. I say you just stop being paranoid and release the packages. It's not that big of a deal.
  16. klite mega codec pack and klite codec pack (not mega) both come with dvd decoders. They're just not selected to install, by default. When installing, just scroll down and select one of teh three dvd decoders. Personally, I use Indeo. It works just fine. I just played a .vob in WMP10 just to make sure it worked.

Nilfred, I was just taking a quick glance at your script ... it looks like you're counting how many updates are being installed so as to maybe echo back the total in the end (I didn't scroll down to the end of the script). You could just use the /l switch on any hotfix and that will show a popup window that displays all of the hotfixes that are installed on the system. I could be wrong about your intentions, though. I don't speak Spanish, so I couldn't read what you wrote. That's just the way it appeared to me. :shrug:
  18. I'm confused ... you're saying that it reformats your partition, then it reboots. After it goes through BIOS, it boots to the CD again and starts teh reformat again? It would make sense for you to perhaps go into your BIOS settings and change it to NOT boot from the CD first. Rather, have it boot from your HDD. Then it should load the Windows XP Installer GUI. From there, it should be able to read the CD just fine. I used the wrong boot image on my old unattended disc and wound up having to do that.

Essentially, if it plays those files just fine and dandy ... or if you're like me and you don't have, and have no intention of getting, those files, then it should be a-okay to put this on your unattended disc, correct? I just wanna make sure there's not something else that I could possibly be missing. I plan on finalizing my unattended disc tomorrow night. So if you don't have a final release by then, there shouldn't be any problems with me using this, right? I just don't wanna use the v509 MSI that the other guy made because it places the shortcut in "start->programs->multimedia" I think that's stupid. PS- Would you be as so kind to post your switches?

I think you have no respect for the people that made your software popular and provided you with feedback to improve further development. If you rationalize the expiration date on the free version by saying that businesses can take it and use it without paying for it, that's fine. That's a very valid reason. However, why would you say I have no respect for software development when I'm creating a workaround your expiration date for my own personal use? I'm not a business. I fall under the conditions which you set forth, clearly stating your personal associated implication of "freeware license for home users." It follows to reason that you wouldn't care if I deny you of any donations; likewise, it shouldn't matter to you if I create a workaround for your expiration date, as long as I remain within the constraints of what you consider to be a "home user," or any other freeware-meritorious individual. I'll tell you what, if you can provide me with a good reason to not use my "custom" version of your software, then I will gladly start using your software legitimately ... I might even pay for it if you're convincing enough. Otherwise, I'll continue to do what I do to get around your little expiration date. PS- Don't worry, I won't tell others how to do it; nor will I provide others with my workaround. I'll respect you enough to not be an as***** about it.
  21. Lemme know if that program works for you. I wanna add transparencies to my image as well. I always thought that you couldn't have transparencies in bmps because they're rastor graphics. But I guess you're not really setting it as transparent, you're just using a "magic pink."
