  1. I totally agree with the other answers, RPM every time. If you really want speed, look at Hitachi 7200rpm 2½" HD's Installed for several clients, they are very pleased. Little more to buy but worth it.
  2. Built an XP Pro 64 for a client as a small server. Used a purchased 64 Pro (OEM). Looks great and is very fast, no problems with the display. Gigabyte 945Pro MB with ICR7R RAID 2 gig DDR2/667 2 x Hitachi SATA2 in RAID I agree that drivers are a problem for older scanners, etc. Anything new is OK. Vista (what limp wrist at Microsoft thought of that name) will open the door for 64 OS with everything (new) having 32/64 drivers, especially as the driver model has changed. It is very difficult to buy a CPU that is not 64 bit, this will also drive the change.
  3. Try rebooting in SAFE MODE and run the AntiSpyware and AntiVirus products. Usually nothing runs in the background in Safe Mode. This may work, otherwise backup your imporatant files and start again. If you had a good AntiSpyware/AntiVirus product running you would not have had this problem.
  4. Had a similar problem a few weeks ago (2003 Server) Did not happen all the time, had a mind of its own. Power supply problem. When I opened the old PSU I found 3 blown capacitors similar to the motherboard problem many people have had. If it's a server, use a Thermaltake or Antec PSU. Rock solid. A UPS would probably help.
  5. Thanks Iceman That worked fine. I used option "1" and it worked (ghost -clone,mode=pload,src=1:2\restore.gho:1,dst=1:1 -sure -rb) Adding the ":1" after the restore.gho was the thing I had missed. Thanks for your help. It will stop the "little darlings" from screwing things up. All a product of California's education system. p.s. I find it easier to create a BAT file called ghost.bat and add the command line in there, it makes things easy to change and add mouse.com and gdisk. I rename ghost.exe to ghost2.exe so the line reads: (ghost2 -clone,mode=pload,src=1:2\restore.gho:1,dst=1:1 -sure -rb)
  6. Thanks IcemanND I will be at the school in the morning and will give those ideas a try. If I have to I will image the C: to the partition as an image. Using gdisk -hide /p:1 /y to hide the partition is another option to stop the little rug rats from deleting anything on the partition. Thanks for you help
  7. Manufacturer: Elitegroup Co. Model: i-Buddie 456C6974 6567726F 75702043 6F2E2020 20202020 20202020 20202020 20202020 Hope this helps
  8. Working on some PC's that a local Christian School uses. The kids screw them up every couple of weeks. Cannot use Deep Freeze or similar as they have programs that write info to the HD all the time. XP Pro, 256megs, Celeron 2.4 478pin, 40gig Seagate IDE, CD-ROM, Floppy Partitioned the hard drive 30gig/10gig. On the 10gig is a partition image of the C: drive. I want the School "tech" to be able to boot from a CD with Ghost on it and drop the image on the partition onto the "C: drive". (image is called RESTORE.GHO) Using the following command line: ghost -clone,mode=pload,src=1:2\restore.gho,dst=1:1 -sure -rb I get: useage error 10095 No source partition was specified from image. 1:2 is the second partition -- 1:1 is the primary partition. Pretty sure my syntax is wrong but have used a dozen CD's so far. Any ideas work be appreciated.
  9. I don't know why M1CK calls Asrock "crap", the are a breakaway from ASUS and use the same design staff. If PRATHAPML uses one, they must be OK, he does a lot of research first. I have used several 939's in the field and have never had a problem.
  10. Agree with everyone. I have several 920n out in the field, everyone likes them and the price is good. Your old CRT 19" has a diag. size of 17.6" to 18.0". LCD's by law have to be the stated size. i.e. 19" diag. Please bear in mind that LCD's have an "optimal" setiing, on the 920n it is 1280 x 1024 dpi. If set at 800 x 600 it looks like crap. Enjoy your new monitor.
  11. The easiest way is to use Nlite. Download and install. http://www.nliteos.com/download.html Point it to your folder (c:\xpcd) and ONLY use the create ISO option. It will automatically add the "boot" section the CD/DVD. (You may want to look at all the other things it will do, i.e. Integrate RyanVM updates etc.) Use Nero/Roxio or anything that will burn from an ISO. You should be able to double click the *.ISO file and you burner program should auto start. I use this all the time to do exactly what your trying to do, create Microsoft bootable CD's and DVD's
  12. Most of the parts used in a PC are standard off-the-shelf parts. Download Everest Home and it will tell you what chips are used for the audio and modem and all the other chips in the machine. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
  13. Thanks for your countless hours on this project. You have made a lot of people very happy, I am one of them MMC now work like it should. Thanks again

    Defragmenter

Did installs from a DVD with the following: XP Home & Pro with SP2 (New CD's) Nlite R7 RyanVM 2.04 integrated with Nlite Bashrat's drivers integrated Problem: With Home or Pro after installing Xpize 4.2MCE, Defragmenter does not show any drives and only half the menu options at the top work i.e. Help and Options. I Restore back to the Xpize install point aand everything is back to normal. Tried several PC's with both Home and Pro SP2 on both, (plus Nlite & Bashrat.) Any ideas ?? Bigbrit
  15. Why not Slipstream your SP1 CD to SP2, saves a lot of time during installs.
  16. I have done this many times. Any decent CLONING program will work. Drive Copy - TrueImage - Ghost.
  17. Sounds like a power supply problem. Is it a name brand i.e. Antec, Thermaltake or some cheap and nasty $19.99 Sunday morning special. If you are building a unit for a friend or even your sister, spend a little extra and go for Antec etc. Have had several units recently that have had one or more capacitors bulged at the top in the PS all causing stutdowns or reboots. When it happened with Suse Linux I knew it was hardware. Wish you luck.
  18. I use the following program with Server 2003 without it asking all the stupid questions: http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptstopper.asp There are many different options: Shutdown - Reboot etc. Choose method (i.e. shutdown) and chose "create shortcut" Puts an icon on the Desktop p.s. With Server 2003, use Firefox, saves have to change restrictions in IE.

    XPize 4.2 BETA 2

A million thanks from all the users of your hard work. A feature request: As you have added extra features in the Beta 2 version and a lot of check boxes, is it possible to create a "CFG File" to save having to check those items. If the CFG was in the same folder/drive as the main file that would be perfect. Again, thanks
  20. A product I have used is "Deep Freeze" from Faronics.com http://www.faronics.com/html/calculator.as...=corporate&ID=1 Cost $24.95 and can be disabled at any time (reboot required) She can download/install/delete anything she wants. At the next reboot the PC is set back to the way it was prior to her messing about, No Spyware, No Viruses and the crap she installed, GONE.
  21. Great work XPero, we all thank you for the endless hours you spent on the project. If ever I am over in your part of the world I will buy you a beer or several if you want them. I do have a question: Most of the machines I have installed Xpize on have the "Blue X" boot screen but recently several of them boot up with the normal Windows boot screen. Any ideas ??
  22. Fully agree with Ripken204 Air should always go out of the case. Most cases have a slot at the bottom (plastic) front of the case, this may have to be enlarged to gain the the maximum air flow.
  23. Try www.maxtor.com and look for Powermax 4.21 ISO image, this will self boot and run full diags on your HD. I will try and paste the URL but it seems this site truncates. BigBrit http://maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menui...&downloadID=113
  24. Found a Wester Digital (Paradise & Phillips) driver on www.driversguide.com. You need to join the site (free) and then cut/paste the following: http://members.driverguide.com/index.php?a...b&jmd=and&fzz=b Hope this helps. p.s. Laptops reqire the "Monitor" section to be set 800x600 or 1024x768, whatever your screen runs at, also set refresh to 60. Bigbrit
