  1. I'm not too sure about the XGamer sound card, but there should be a digital coaxial output on the card itself. Plug the RCA cable into this port and into the coaxial input of your speakers and in windows, make sure that in the sound settings, there is Digital Output only.
  2. I read somewhere that the 8mb buffer is a load of s***e when it comes to reading/writing over 40mb of data. It was said that it makes a major difference when writing the first 40mb of data, then all is back to average write speed. Come to think of it, im sure you'd agree to a certain extent that this is true since the write speed on an average HD is fast anyway. The buffer acts as a temporary guard against minor transfer slow-down.
  3. You're better off using FDisk. chkdsk isn't the best utility for error correction, but since WinXP came out, do we really have a choice?!
  4. I had that once, but I cant remember how I got rid of it. Might have deleted the partition and created a new one.
  5. I've heard that WMP9 had some kind of spyware on it that tracks users' activities. I don't use WMP9 at all, I prefer using the Classic version in the Windows Media folder.
  6. I'm wondering how many people have used Freeserve back in the days before Broadband became available. For those who have used Freeserve, I would like to ask if and how could I make a 56k connection download webpages; antivirus updates faster?
  7. If you click on the chart, select the exact port number, it'll tell you what the common use for the port is.
  8. I'm using NIS2002 and when I took the test, it said I failed the test because ports 0,1 were closed. Is this a risk to my system at all? Also, does anyone know how I can configure NIS2002 to stealth these two ports?
  9. What a weird website! haha Expensive too!!
  10. Does anyone know if the RAM and HD prices have gone up or not, recently?
  11. Hey there. I would like to ask everyone where would be the cheapest place to buy computer components online (UK only)? Dabs.com is not the cheapest on many items so take that off the list.
  12. Yes.... but does anyone have any suggestions as to which would be better?
  13. HyperOS is a piece of software that allows you to create (backups of) Windows and switch between the OSes at anytime. It's objective is to crate backups just in case anything goes wrong with the original copy. Or, for people to use the back up copies as a test environment, just like the VirtualPC.

    HyperOS

I've had very little experience on it.... not enough to give you a satisfactory answer to be honest. Basically, if you wanted to run two OSes using HyperOS, you'll have to install it on the first OS, then install the new OS through the software. After that, you can drag & drop the new OS into however many partitions you like and run them for tests or whatever. I think in Release version 6, you can run the OS from HyperDrive (in other words, running the OS off RAM)
  15. Hi there. I'm wondering whether it's better to use VirtualPC or maybe something like HyperOS (if anyone's heard of it)? Any advice? Also, does anyone know the price of VirtualPC when MS releases the retail version?
  16. No, I don't think it's about disk write chaching. I think it's more to do with some sort of service that affects the security of the OS or something like that.
  17. I can't remember where I saw a thread regarding the Bootvis tune-up, but someone mentioned that a particular 'service' or whatever it was - is activated during the tune-up process and remained active after the tune-up was complete. Does anyone know where I can find the thread? I can't remember who posted it, or what the actual title was.
  18. AMD beat intel by 9% as reported in the news, but remember, AMD and intel are not running at the same CPU frequency. I'm unsure of whether to go for an AthlonFX, Athlon64, or just stick to the current line when my next planned upgrade is next summer. I feel uncertain that the AMD64 processors will run 32-bit apps at full speed.
  19. Hey people. Want to know what your opinion(s) are on the 64-bit future of computing. Firstly, which of the two would you go for? AMD or Intel? Secondly, do you think AMD will out-perform the Intel equivalent?
  20. You'll need to use the resource hacker. That just helps you edit the text. Check ntfs.org if you cant find the link on this site.
  21. So you're saying MS is taking the NTFS file system off totally? I don't think so! WinFS is only an add-on so that the OS groups ALL of the same type of files together no matter where you store it on your HD. As for spying on users... MS has been at it for a long time already and that includes WinME.
  22. I don't know why the graphics industry is converging towards DirectX 9 these days. Previously, Video card makers and game designers preferred the OpenGL standard more than anything. Now it seems that DirectX is gaining ground pretty fast.
  23. LOL @ radman53. Don't tell me you're serious!
  24. I'm in need of making the background of my html files transparent, not just the text box of the standard icons you find on the desktop.
  25. I've tried using a proxy, but couldn't load any webpages after I entered the IP address of the server.
