  1. ah i think i get what you mean now.. i'll keep that in mind from here out but since it won't let me edit the last post it'll have to wait for a mod. Edit: apparently my 'edit' button wasn't working last time, but it has now been fixed. Thank you both. I like smaller boxes: much less of an eyesore
  2. you can find some of those (show file extensions, show hidden files/folders, i think status bar, etc.) in this .reg file but you might have to do a little searching. Or i'm pretty sure Mike_Wilson put them in his program, which will generate a reg file for you here or if you want to do it yourself I recommend RegShot and InstallRite to monitor before & after changes. but like SilverHaze420 said some of them (like folder view=icons) you're better off just setting and exporting. Hope that helps.
  3. I know this thread doesn't seem to lively anymore but just in case anybody's interested here's a few program-specific tweaks i found (don't think they're in the "master-reg file" but i'm not 100%.) (can't remember for sure @ eraser / cmd though..)
  4. Does anybody know where custom toolbar information is stored for the taskbar? I've used regshot and can't seem to find it in the registry and haven't had any useful google results either. What I'm looking for is a way to automate this so I don't have to do it manually every reinstall. Anyway here's some pictures to clear up what I'm doing: I select "New Toolbar" and choose "My Computer" and I get this: This works, but I'd love to be able to have my install cd do it for me.
  5. that's for the link, that's exactly what I was looking for. Yeah, I'm sure it would be very similar. I think it could be done simply by having a program (for hidden files or for file exts) that checks the current registry value a simply reverses it. but then i would still need to know how to make explorer use a custom button and how to link the button to the program/script. ========================= other resources: MSDN Shell Extension handlers Wildcard Select (open source) ... not actually used just something cool i ran across #2: Adding a "Select All" object to the context menu for folder backgrounds selectall.exe is just a compiled AutoIt script with 1 line: Send("^a") <edit 7-29-05> note the above refers to the .REG version that calls a compiled script.
  6. Here are some fixes/tweaks/shell extensions that people have helped me find/I've come across/and a few I've made: Examples # 1-3 (from left to right) #1) Remove "Print" item from the context menu(s) of files:Remove_Print_on_Context_Menu.zip (updated 7-28-05) - now "remove print from text-based files menu" actually works - included additional tweaks to remove print from .pdf & internet shortcuts (thanks to Bold_Fortune & war59312) #2) Context Menu Extensions: [.REG versions (only work in "all files" & "folder" menus):] select_all.zip browserback.zip (you can get improved versions of these if you follow the link below) <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><edit 8/04/05> released some "real" shell extensions: here</span> #3 Details View Extension: FolderSize on Details View Columns (thanks to Zxian!): #4) "Toggle Button" Extensions (for "Hidden Files" & "File Ext's"): Work In Progress - Original goal was to make a shell extension that determined the current value of either setting and "toggle" it to its opposite value, then refresh the file system/view (aka Windows Explorer). It was (hopefully) to be implemented as a custom button on the Windows Explorer toolbar. - <updated 7-28-05> I plan on spending some time find a better way to refresh. If I can find a way to make this work with the current window, I then would like to find a way to make it refresh all "instances"/windows of explorer. - The other problem is that I haven't been able to find any information on HOW to add custom toolbar buttons to explorer. If you see my post on the next page, I have inlcuded links to several programs I have found that either add their own custom button or a custom toolbar to explorer. One solution I am considering is using Drop Bar to implement the buttons. I'll look into it later (maybe I'll figure it out once I get a chance to study the source from Drop Bar) after I'm happy with the Refresh method. Currently, I'm working with this project as a context menu (FolderBackground) and I plan I releasing it as such once I fix the refresh and i'm waiting on the button extension. togglebutton.jpg Any one feel free to jump in here: Even though I've surprised myself with how much I've been able to figure out, I'll take all the help I can get. <edit> 6-04-07: sorry but most of the original links were dead. I've gone through and removed the bad links (I left orange text behind), but the only file that I still had was the remove print from context menu. I uploaded that, but as for the rest you have 2 choices: 1) opt for one of my shell extensions (see my sig) or 2) build a simple script or exe (I recommend AutoIt) and add a registry entry to lauch said script or exe. I used to do things the 2nd way when I first started, but have more or less abandoned this approach in favor of the 1st way.
  7. in other words IMHO (at least as far as the reinstall cd goes): Dell is a f@$^%!# bas#$%! who screws you over.
  8. what? You must be one of the lucky ones... my Dell OEM version of Win XP Pro SP1 is totally screwed. Dell made it some a**-backwards way so that I can't remove sp1 and slipstream sp2 onto mine. in fact i haven't been able to make ANY progress w/ my dell oem cd had to port my oembios files from it to another cd to bypass reactivation on a different oem cd.
  9. I don't know if its crucial that you have it search for some tag file in a directory (i.e. if you would have many PCs to do this on) or if you might be willing to consider alternatives (shortcuts you can get away with if number of PCs is small). But one idea that immediately came to mind on reading your post was that if you didn't have many variations on this (ie. perhaps you had 3 locations on different pcs something like: E:\blah1 , I:\HiddenInSomeHorriblyLongName\blah2 , & the default mydocs path) then you could easily get away with some if statements to check whether or not you custom locations exists and if not to use the default. IF EXIST "E:\blah1" GOTO Type1 IF EXIST "I:\HiddenInSomeHorriblyLongName\blah2" GOTO Type2 :Add Conditions for Default MyDocs Here maybe reg add something or other :Type1 blahblahblah GOTO Somewhere :Type2 qwerty GOTO Elsewhere yeah... i know i'm lazy but you get the idea. Don't know if you would want to use something like that but I'm fond of thinking of quick cheapies if not then i'm sure somebody smarter than me will have a better answer for you...
  10. Works fine on my end (xp home oem w/ sp2; dell keyboard ?... at least 2 years old) well don't know if it would help or not but back before I knew of that tweak my dell had the same problem (num lock was never on in windoze) even though my BIOS had it enabled. I was puzzled by this for awhile and just kind of guessed that maybe if BIOS sets Numlock on then Windows does so too that it be more of a toggle effect than anything. Abyway what I'm getting at is (whether or not my guesswork is correct or just seems like it to me): I turned my numlock to off in my bios and then it was always on when I booted to Windows. Not saying it would work for sure, but its not too difficult either. maybe some win-dohs! super guru can tell me if i'm right or why something like that would have worked? dumb-luck?
  11. try one of these programs or my "cheater method" described in that post.
  12. these should be Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;----- ;----- SHOW protected operating system files ;----- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\SuperHidden] "DefaultValue"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001 ;----- ;----- Keyboard Num-Lock on ;----- [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard] "InitialKeyboardIndicators"="2" These (2nd ones) work fine on my pc, haven't had need of the others. As far as the others you try searching in the reg file here
  13. just did one 2 hours ago (while I was playin' Halo )
  14. Here's an example from one of my reg files: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;----- ;----- Remove Entries from the "New" Context Menu ;----- [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bfc\ShellNew]; Briefcase Files [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtf\ShellNew]; RichText Files [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ers\ShellNew]; Eraser Task Files [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rar\ShellNew]; RAR archives [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\ShellNew]; WAV files [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\ShellNew]; ZIP archives Unfortunately, as far as I know there's no way to remove all but said types from the New Menu (unless maybe you write a script or something but that's too much work for me )
  15. I LOVE YOU! And to be on topic, I find WMP 9 to be alright as well. I don't expect too much from my media players, anyhow. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> i must have missed that the first time through but i am glad that there IS a playlist...
  16. No because anysoftware you have that installs autorun entries would do so AFTER cmdline.txt stage so it would be better to call regedit silently at the end of your batch or runonceex.cmd (after all your programs have been installed). here's an example of what you might put in your regtweaks.reg: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;============================= ; Remove Autorun Entries: ;============================= [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] "ATI Launchpad"=- "Eraser"=- [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] "SunJavaUpdateSched"=- Also some programs will just put a link to themselves in one of the startup folders so you might need additional lines at the end of your batch/runonceex.cmd (or preferably in a separate cleanup.cmd) :This code is for a batch file or command script NOT a .reg file : Remove entries from startup folders DEL "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\SHORTCUTNAME.lnk" DEL "%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%username%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\SHORTCUTNAME.lnk" where you would replace "SHORTCUTNAME" with the name of the shortcut to be deleted (or just use "*" if you want to empty it)
  17. Try installing them and use either RegShot or InstallRite (or InstallWatch Pro). both work good for tracking changes in the registry and are FREE. InstallRite lets you track changes to the registry, changes to files, and even create install kits OR export the registry changes directly into a .reg file. RegShot is usually alot quicker, but the downside is that it only tracks registry changes and that it can't export the changes into a .reg (or even the syntax of a .reg file)
  18. ::blinks:: ::smacks himself:: why didn't i think of that...
  19. have you tried this ; Disable ScreenSaver [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop] "ScreenSaveActive"=dword:00000000 or read this forum ?
  20. i can't remember what the ext for Photoshop is but just replace the xxx with the file ext and this should work Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xxx\ShellNew] I know "My Ebooks" is created by i think Acrobat Reader but i don't remember the reg key, and as far "My Music" & "My Pictures" they're shell folders. No clue on actually disabling them, but here's how you can change location if that's what you mean. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders] "My Pictures"="E:\\# My Documents\\My Pictures" "My Music"="E:\\# My Documents\\My Music" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders] "My Pictures"="E:\\# My Documents\\My Pictures" "My Music"="E:\\# My Documents\\My Music" you can also use expandle strings if you want your path to have another %environmentvariable%\inthepath (for example "%systemdrive%\Not MY Documents\YOUR Music") but it's easier to change it in regedit then just export the key if you do it this way. fyi when you use expandle strings the old "REGEDIT4" style hex(2) values are different from "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" style hex(2) values.
  21. this probably doesn't help but using /K parameter you can set the directory when you call cmd cmd.exe /k cd "C:\" opens cmd pointed to C:\ although if you always want cmd to point to C:\ and you use a shortcut to call cmd you could just put that in the shortcut? just an idea
  22. lol I remember Deep Freeze! My old jr college had that installed on all its systems, and i have to say that it was much better than the nazi-like approach some admins have of turning off EVERY feature in windows (you know who you are...) I just hate going to a library/school/etc. and seeing a system where the only icon on the desktop or startmenu is IE/some other browser and you can't access other files/drives or Internet Options (or at my new college you can't even right click ANYTHING ). makes me remember why some people get the desire to hack past security measures in the first place. truthfully I would like it if more businesses/schools/etc. DID use DF and hopefully with better luck than prathapml had.
  23. since you "post" (aka you didn't actually post just made thread) doesn't specify how you want to "Change the way Security Center alerts" try: here or a more graphical approach: try this program
  24. I agree OpenOffice is a good way to go. I just got done with chem2 at my college and i was able to use almost all my chem2 formulas by using different spreadsheet formulas (keep in mind openoffice can save in Excel's format so if you have to work on it at school you're not totally screwed... )
