  1. I agree that Nlite has already more tweaks than it needs for its primary purpose. Maybe we should Nlite Nlite? GL
  2. As far as my research shows, desktop/first icon is not an easy task to accomplish. As regards Nlite, although it has that option, it has never succeeded to enforce it properly and I suspect, like some other tweaks in nlite, that windows' dlls stick their fingers after installation and revert the values when they resvr32 themselves. In any case, good luck implementing the tweak after the desktop has been shown and icon positions remembered (one possible exception being if you set desktop to 'auto arrange', but I think it still needs to be done before displaying the desktop). The tweak itself (and I don't know how exactly is implemented in nlite) is a classical case of the Internet's "heard it through the grapevine", i.e. blindly copy/pasting a text that was read who knows where and whose origin has been long lost. No explanation why or citing sources, just the same text everywhere! It involves a registry entry "SortOrderIndex" that is applied to Windows' so-called Shell Folders (My computer, My documents, etc.), each one represented in it's own CLSID (a number, identification tag for Windows objects - there are far more of them than Shell Folders). There are a couple of them already defined on a virgin Windows installation (and the tweak circulating on the Internet involves changing one of them) but I strongly suspect that Windows enumerates all of them and decides the order of display. I've verified this using Regmon and indeed, several other Shell Folders are queried for the presence of SortOrderIndex registry entry (Network connections, Recycle bin). The consequence of this would be a nice tweak for arranging all Windows' "virtual folders" on the Desktop (except those NONENUMerated - nudge nudge, wink wink ), but alas, nobody actually bothered. And this would be perfect for those who do unattended, but nevertheles, I still think this is useless for me because it has to be done: 1. before displaying the desktop for the first time and 2. setting it to "auto arrange". So If anybody feels he's up to the task, be my guest. GL *Edit* Since I'm here, let me touch some of the other things: My Computer\Special Folders: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\ Add/delete items at will under this registry key and they will appear/dissapear when you browse My Computer. (Item = CLSID of the special folder. You can find a list easily on the Internet). **another edit** I fired up TweakUI and now I see i was talking about "My Copmuter Icons". You want to change the location of special folders. Although I strongly advise against that, they can by found in BOTH: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders AND HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders (BOTH meaning that if you change them, you need to do it simultaneously. And, at the second location, they should be of REG_EXPAND_SZ type - expandable string - populated partly with unexpanded environment variables - when you see it, you'll know what I'm talking about ) Command Prompt: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console It's under that key. What do you want to change exactly? And for all users, try also (very carefully, it can break stuff): HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Console Templates: Search the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT branch for the string "ShellNew" and it'll become clearer. No easy way to change all of them without knowing what's installed on that particular machine. Programs install things at will (often unnecessary). Maybe you could try manipulating only the known entries of a virgin Windows installation. Explorer\Command Keys: is under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AppKey and then some numbers. Look up on a working Windows and it'll become clearer. Hope this helps. GL
  3. I like this solution. But make sure you disable F5 also and glue the keyboard in so they couldn't bring in their own. And there are programs to 'force' safe mode on next boot... You'd need to take care of that too. GL
  4. I have, that's why I go few extra steps (Nlite and beyond) to kill it and its driver(s). Otherwise, it's quite capable of slowing down one's computer (but mostly not too much). Just kidding. Who needs it, will use it. GL
  5. If you want to shedule drive E: for checking on next startup you would open a comand prompt and type: fsutil dirty set E: or even put it in a bach file or whatever. Reference. GL
  6. Well you're in luck. There is a little documented windows registry entry that makes ALL aplications ever opened to be maximized (not fullscreen). I don't know if it fits your requirements perfectly, but I'd say it's pretty close. REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "MaximizeApps"=dword:1 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "MaximizeApps"=dword:1 *edit: on second glance, it doesn't prevent them from minimizing. But i think (don't remember any more) that it disables the middle (resize) button. GL
  7. Anyone know of some games (freeware or otherwise) that have low cpu usage? And yes, low cpu usage is the main criterium. Let me explain. I have this laptop that is rather old, but perfect for surfing and typing and other nondemanding tasks, but the makers (ECS, SiS chipset) somehow managed to wire the fans directly to temperature sensors. How do I know this? Well, none of the temp monitoring apps work (they find only the HDD) and even on slightest increase of CPU usage the fans spin up immediately. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing (it works, doesnt it), but the fans are starting to show their age and are getting pretty anoying. OK, this story is maybe a special case, but I bet many other ppl would like to employ their older hardware for example (or reduce electricity consumption or room heating or...). I googled a bit (and I'm no amateur) and was surprised to find that I could find nothing similar mentioned anywhere. And I happen to like puzzle and other quick games (so I could multitask better and leave the game if necessary) and I've played quite a bit of them, but seems that no author is paying attention to this (you can easily judge if the game really needs CPU power or not). And I remind you, I can see (or better, hear) cpu usage immediately. The only game that didn't wake up the fans was XP's spider solitaire . If anyone can suggest something, I'd be most thankful. GL
  8. Hi playsafe, Check if some of these could help you: this is my best bet in case you didn't know something The following are intended to reduce number of network connections/traffic (or the usual tweaking): here's one and another one or even this Another idea would be to install another network protocol like Netbeui (if it allows printer sharing over it, I don't know) so Windows wouldn't count those connections (yeah, I know this is a limit of number of users, but you could try). Hope this helps a bit. GL
  9. Try this: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "Show_StatusBar"="yes" "StatusBarOther"=dword:1 "StatusBarWeb"=dword:1 Although it says it's for IE, it might work. GL *edit - if it doesn't work, you have to go through folder options - open a folder and set "view status bar" in the menu, THEN go to folder options and do "apply to all folders".
  10. That software is excellent! Thanks! Glad to be of assistance. GL
  11. Here's your tinfoil hat: ^ I hate when people tease me about it. GL
  12. How they took things out: They researched patterns of usage of the menus and everything and decided that -- let's say 54 per cent -- of people use only this feature -- i.e. left click only, or adaptive menus or... (insert any of the features listed above). So they made that thing default and said -- screw all others. Same with office 2007. Next thing you know you'll be called a terrorist if you don't use hibernate. GL
  13. Because MS takes a lot of money to slap WHQL sticker on the drivers. GL
  14. Ehhh... what's wrong with (your) mouth? Those sellers must be screaming from joy counting the money they got from selling AIR. Or use vacuum cleaner. GL
  15. No idea if this will help you, but it seems to have some relation to your problem: tweak I don't have big enough monitor to test. Also, some have reported it doesn't work. GL
  16. This smells like DRM. Maybe there will be other consequences if removed? GL
  17. True, take the example of a drive with two partitions - both show as full circle. No way, man! On a side note, I lost some data after UD - but that might be my fault - i did some other things at the same time. GL
  18. It wants to say "DCOM Server Process Launcher", but for some reason it can't... Also, you could check for "Windows Installer" and "Cryptographic services". GL
  19. Although true, that is by far not the most significant difference. Trying to keep it simple, let's say 64bit is better, but today's programs cannot fully make use of it. But currently it does not matter, because: 1. 64bit processors run 32bit code well (that means games will work and you can choose which Vista to install); and 2. Most (if not all) new processors are 64bit. So, oviradoi, I'd go with 64bit also if money allows. GL
  20. ...and it works again! I guess it was that SEO thing (whatever it means). GL
  21. But I don't want to go to last post, I want to go to first unread. There is a difference, no? Anyway, I have some more bad news: It doesn't work in IE either, and I can't even log in the forum with Firefox. I consider my system quite stable and have no problems otherwise. But it's no big deal, I don't expect you to fix things just for me. It's just that this "go to first unread" worked before... ...and it works here. Pozdrav GL
  22. Does what work properly? Maybe issue described in this topic. It doesn't work, as I said, the issue"reappeared". Just goes to the top of the page. GL
  23. This issue (as described in the first post) reappeared for me. Nothing installed/removed on my computer in the meantime. Started two days ago, persists even after deleting cookies of this board/logging off/on. Opera here. GL *Edit - for clarity, I was also affected the first time around and it was fixed at the time when others said so.
  24. You will get more help (or even try to find out yourself with google) if you show the "details" tab of "unknown device properties". There you will find "Device instance ID" with some letters and numbers below. Search for them. GL
