  1. Do you know these guys? It's not unknown for hackers to post "free" Apps in order to hack your PC. The forums look pretty empty to me... I use HDDScan (for other purpose, on other drive) for several months and seen no problems. GL
  2. You can try this to unpack the EXEs. GL
  3. Here's something. GL
  4. I eat chease. Now someone comes and tells me it's enough, I've done it for twenty years, I must adapt to the new ways... and start eating mushrooms. Why don't you leave me an option to do what I want? I'm not telling you to use the old start menu. That's dictatorship. And one good reason to use DOS: direct hardware control. Try telling the Seagate victims that came to our forum to unbrick their drives under XP, Vista or Seven. GL
  5. Is this the Priority Queue? (previously I searched for queuePriority) Does it have something to do with NCQ (I couldn't quite understand from the paper). Should it be disabled in pre-Vista? GL
  6. I don't have any problem with the driver. Just looking at the parameters I wondered if I can squeeze any more speed or obtain more efficient power management from the driver. Usually they are found here: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Parameters] "BusType"=dword:00000003 "queuePriorityEnable"=dword:00000000 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iaStor\Parameters\Port0] "AN"=dword:00000000 "DIPM"=dword:00000001 "GTF"=dword:00000001 "LPM"=dword:00000001 "LPMDSTATE"=dword:00000001 "LPMSTATE"=dword:00000000 (repeating afterwards with Port1, Port2 etc.) Maybe someone will notice I have changed from the defaults* and this configuration is working well. They are not explained in the inf file. Does anyone have explanation of what they do? I think I discovered some of them (and the explanations on Wikipedia), but under what conditions they should be set/cleared? LPM = Link Power Management AN = (SCSI) Asynchronous (Event) Notification DIPM = Device Initiated Power Management Internet search doesn't yield anything useful besides directions for integration and this Intel's knowledge base. But, for instance, I have Mobile controller so I think it doesn't apply for me. And I don't think they depend on the Operating System (they are installed on all). I would be grateful if someone can give more insight about these parameters. GL * Edit: No I haven't. I checked again and previously I was looking at desktop parameters, for mobile these are the exact parameters in the inf file.
  7. No. I don't know, only Nuhi can answer that.GL
  8. The more I get familiar with NTFS, the more I want to revert to FAT on a boot partition. The only thing that really keeps me from doing it is the error resiliency (chkdisk on boot). I would gladly give away all the other features of NTFS. GL
  9. Here's what mine looks like. Do you also remove the keyboards? I always try to match them (a lot of scrolling up-down). ;Western Europe and United States Afrikaans Basque Catalan Danish Dutch (Belgium) Dutch (Netherlands) English (Australia) English (Belize) English (Canada) English (Caribbean) English (Ireland) English (Jamaica) English (New Zealand) English (Philippines) English (South Africa) English (Trinidad) English (Zimbabwe) Faeroese ... GL
  10. Here's something that might possibly help you. GL
  11. Welcome to the forum, geb. In theory, everything in nLite should be safe to remove - Windows should work, just without that component. In practice, many third party programs depend on something. At the top of this forum is the topic What Not To Remove For Some Programs where users shared their experiences. As a rule of thumb, keep the components that there is slight chance you'll need later. It is very difficult, and often impossible, to insert components which have been removed. Nlite is all about trial and error - and unfortunately that means a lot of work (reinstall of the OS). But it's a lot of fun too. Read the descriptions in the program, they are very informative. There is no "one size fits all" list because everyone has different priorities - someone couldn't live without OE or IE... I doubt there are two persons in the world that would agree on a common list. I think best course would be to research on components (as you did) and then ask questions about speciffic items that aren't clear yet. About update packs - there are also several of them floating around with different goals (only high priority updates, or integrated IE7, WMP11...) I don't follow them so I'm afraid I can't help you more, but hopefully someone else would be able to chime in. Also, you should be able to find (most of) them by searching in the forum. GL
  12. I hope you do count this as service pack; otherwise this sentence is terribly wrong. GL
  13. Errr, not exactly. DCOMLaunch is one of essential services in XP and it's very dangerous to disable it. (It's rarely needed, but when it's needed... it's needed. I, for one, as much as I like to disable useless services, never touch this one - I have been burnt before). So you'd better find out what's wrong with your system and what's preventing the service from starting. I still bet it's a buggy driver. Otherwise, glad I've helped a little. GL
  14. You're welcome. It seems that another thing that can be suspicious/problematic is any startup entries or services that the driver installs. Sometimes drivers can be quite heavy and include components that are not essential for function of the hardware or are intended for another version of Windows. If you can, try (temporarily) disabling the startup entries that the driver package created. If you need help, I can analyze the Total Uninstall log for you (but only if it's Total Uninstall version 2.XX, that's what I have). GL
  15. Cameras and camcorders Scanners Both are tied to Windows Image Acquisition service, which is needed for your camera. If by any chance it isn't removed, set it to automatic. (I had a Vimicro cheap webcam once that needed WIA to work). GL
  16. You got me wrong. I am trying to remove all languages and keeping only english and chinese. But it seems that for the Western Europe and United states part, whenever i choose all the languages except english to be remove, the languages after removal is still there. It seems like a bug No I didn't, I was just skimping on words. I meant you should try keeping only Chinese and then English will be kept automatically. Western Europe and United States is a language group - just as with other languages, if you keep one language from the group, the whole group is kept. This is from inner workings of Windows, not speciffic to nLite (but nLite must obey those rules). So there is another possibility - that the default English language I talked about above is preventing the WE&US group from being removed. But you said in your first post that you ticked all languages except English, so... which English did you not tick? GL * Edit - it was right in my face - none. Try ticking them all.
  17. I'm not sure, but I think U.S. English (the built in, the default) is not listed in languages so it can't be removed. So in theory you could remove all listed languages and still have English. I haven't tested it myself (I always keep few languages I need), so I might be wrong. I hope others can help more. GL
  18. I agree - its exactly like cutting large useless hole in an otherwise good wall. Doesn't that apply to the original text on the page as well? I wouldn't call the hole useless - somewhere in the forums I linked the original article that analyzed the limit when it first appeared - basically, it just slowed down the imagined virus for a couple of hours (assuming that it grows at exponential rate). But it crippled user's programs immensely. And the wall (the limit) isn't in any TCP standard, it was invented by Microsoft. (Sadly, how things are going, it may become a standard). GL
  19. Yep, that's what I said... For example: audio i keep only those files I have (wav, mp3) - everything else goes under the knife. GL
  20. I put shortcuts to everything in SendTo (media players, text & graphic editors) and remove their file associations (which is far more bloat). GL
  21. This patch is what this guy is holding in his hand. GL
  22. For one, you will be unable to select and use that language through Control Panel - Regional options. Consequently, in other programs (not sure how it works - i.e. can a program use a code page / language that is not present on system?) you'll be unable to display/type that language's specific characters (they will be displayed either as squares or as characters from your current language set in Regional options). In any case, don't remove the languages you think there's a slightest chance you'll ever want to use in the future and you'll be fine. I've never encountered any problems due to removed languages. What is removed - * I guess * something in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls system32\kbd*.dll probably much more GL
  23. Yeah, it uses .Net. GL
  24. I use Microsoft's XML Notepad 2007, but my usage is very lightweight / rare. I also searched according to similar criteria as yours, but didn't find anything (I didn't bother too much - I use it very seldom). GL
  25. @DeathNACan: costs of *.* - that will go to Microsoft. Training, certification, courses... that $$$ goes to microsoft. Anyone still wonders why some spell Microsoft with a $? I once read that Adobe makes more money from training than from products themselves. I don't see why that wouldn't apply to Microsoft. @Maleko: but who defines the "times"? Microsoft? And if it appears they are just copying user interface from Apple... all the time? So.... GL
