  1. As it was already explained it seems to be not possible to force Windows setup to use LFN. Just one idea that might work - untested: 1. Create "C:\Long Windows Directory" directory before starting setup. SFN will be "LONGWI~1" 2. Ask Windows Setup to use "LONGWI~1" directory Will it work? Petr
  2. the KB924191 security updates disable use of the msxml2.dll files; thus no fix for MSXML 2.6 will be developed. This fix was re-released, see: http://blogs.technet.com/msrc/archive/2006...f-ms06-061.aspx http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS06-061.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en Petr
  3. Eidenk, maybe its on different note, but I think it is necessary to repat these things for all newcomers: 1. It is very easy to download any software from the Internet. 2. It is illegal to use it if you don't have the proper license, in some countries it is even illegal just to download and own it, not only to use it. It is so important because many people repeat here and in other discussions: "I have downloaded the software from the Internet, so it must be legal.". Even sites like http://www.dll-files.com/ distribute software illegaly and most of their users believe it is legal. The responsibility is always on the end user who has to do the right decision. Petr
  4. Eidenk, I don't know if it has sense to discuss thinks like that. Everybody can use any P2P system and download any version of any MS operating system or even to Google for some of them, it is like to discuss whether it is permitted to write that you can buy marijuana at certain places. Everybody knows that using (and even possession of) marijuana is illegal (almost everywhere). And everybody knows that it is illegal to use software without proper license. Petr
  5. Please read other threads here, it was definitely concluded that there is no chance to run IE7 on Windows 98. Petr
  6. Hi gugutz, at first please read this post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=44731 Than you can look at: http://old.winpack.org/petr/win98_internat_files.html - list of all files with indication whether they are language dependent or not. http://old.winpack.org/petr/win98_internat_fixes.html - list of all fixes with indication whether they are (publicly) available or not. If you don't know where to get them please ask me. For all fixes that are red in your languague column you should contact your local Microsoft office and ask for those hotfixes. You should be able to get: 237493BRZ8.exe 239696BRZ8.exe 241052BRZ8.exe 242193BRZ8.exe 246817BRZ8.exe 250514BRZ8.exe 250876BRZ8.exe 253711BRZ8.exe 257360BRZ8.exe 257821BRZ8.exe 258680BRZ8.exe 270063BRZ8.exe 272621BRZ8.exe 277628BRZ8.exe 278033BRZ8.exe 285189BRZ8.exe 288430BRZ8.exe 288550BRZ8.exe 289635BRZ8.exe 291362BRZ8.exe 293197BRZ8.exe 307004BRZ8.exe 309081BRZ8.exe 317796BRZ8.exe 319571BRZ8.exe 320798BRZ8.exe As the first step you can try to use Google or other search engine, maybe some hotfixes are available somewhere. q244357brx86.exe and q246094brx86.exe should be available here: http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuil...r/BR/159877.htm http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuil...r/BR/162339.htm but are not. Maybe you will be able to find them somewhere, but please double check that you have the right version, exactly the same file name is both for IE5.0 (=Win98SE) and IE5.01 patch. I'm preparing translation of files from all service packs to all languages but I'm not sure if I will be able to finish this task. The last thing to note is that sesp21a is a bit obsolete now, it is almost one year old and there are no signs that Gape will prepare an updated one. Petr

  9. 905915 does not work on 95, 867801 seems to be the latest working update. Petr
  10. I don't know what loader do you use but Microsoft bootable Windows 98 CD-ROMs contains floppy disk image (1.44 MB) for booting. I have created many bootable Win98 images using both CDIMAGE and Nero where you can just click the FD boot emulation. If you use different boot image than 1.44 MB FD it should work too. Petr
  11. Vista RC1 build 5600 contains MSVBVM60.DLL 6.00.9792 1374751 bytes. Petr
  12. Maybe you can try to monitor all http transactions by Proxomitron http://www.proxomitron.info/files/index.html In the log windows you will see all requests and responses. Or maybe monitor all networ traffic by Ethereal: http://www.ethereal.com/download.html Petr
  13. You need driver for your USB 2.0 controller, NUSB project contains just mass storage driver, not USB controller driver. Here is the list of known USB 2.0 Win 9x drivers: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&amp...st&p=517622 You can identify your USB controller using Everest: [ Intel 82801FB ICH6 - Enhanced USB2 Controller [B-2] ] Device Properties: Device Description Intel 82801FB ICH6 - Enhanced USB2 Controller [B-2] Bus Type PCI Bus / Device / Function 0 / 29 / 7 Device ID 8086-265C Subsystem ID 1462-6250 Device Class 0C03 (USB Controller) Revision 04 Fast Back-to-Back Transactions Supported, Disabledthe important information is Devide ID and Subsystem ID. ie6 on 95

So I just tested all IE5.5 updates and the last working on Windows 95 is Q867801, Q871260 and all newer (Q834707, Q890923, Q883939, Q896727, Q896688, Q905915) does not work. Probably because of unresolved MSHTML.DLL dependecy to InitializeCriticalSectionAndSpinCount in KERNEL32.DLL. This function is not present in any latest Windows 95 kernels (4.00.952, 4.00.1112, 4.03.1216) but is present in Windows 98. Petr

    ie6 on 95

I just noticed that even IE 5.5 SP2 with latest patches does not work on Windows 95. Probably there are too many incompatibilities or unresolved references in many files Petr

    ie6 on 95

How have you installed IE6 on 95? The highest IE version supported on 95 is 5.5SP2. Petr
  17. I seems that all of KB832584, KB888617, KB899282 fixes are no longer available. Petr KB899282 not available anymore? wasnt it released last year? bummer. can you try requesting the KB888617 Msvbvm60.dll v6.0.97.86 hotfix instead? or the KB832584 hotfix if KB888617 is not available? As I already wrote these hotfixes seems to be no longer available. Petr
  18. What was your BIOS setup for this disk? My experience is that it is necessary to set it to "NONE" but then there is problem with the transfer speed because the IDE disk controller (PIIX4 in this case) is not programmed correctly. Have you tried to test the transfer speed, for example by HDTach 2.7? The transfer speed should be around 30 MB/s. Petr
  19. No, SESP2.1a contained kernel32.dll version 4.10.2225. 4.10.2222 A is Windows version displayed on system properties tab. Petr
  20. And the error message is "While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error"? Have you tried Windows 98 first edition without and with the Q312108 patch? I tried Windows 95 (4.00.950), 95 OSR2 (4.00.1111), 98 (4.10.1998) in Virtual PC 2004 on box with Pentium D 820 (2.8 GHz) and no protection error appeared even with clean install. NDIS.VXD is the lowest layer above the network card driver and all network comunication should go thru it. The only Windows protection error I have experienced on Windows 95 in Virtual PC 2004 environment was with Ntkern.vxd 4.03.1212, 4.03.1213 was OK. I'm not experienced with VMware and I don't have any other machine with AMD processor than K6-2/400. Petr
  21. mshtml.dll 7.00.5700.6 has the following unresolved dependencies on Windows 98 SE: iert.dll - missing psapi.dll - missing IEFRAME.DLL - missing UxTheme.dll - missing GDI32.DLL - missing GetFontUnicodeRanges KERNEL32.DLL - missing GetSystemDefaultUILanguage - missing GetSystemWindowsDirectoryW - missing GetUserDefaultUILanguage - missing EnumUILanguagesW - missing ActivateActCtx - missing CreateActCtxW - missing ReleaseActCtx - missing DeactivateActCtx USER32.DLL - missing AllowSetForegroundWindow - missing IsWinEventHookInstalled ADVAPI32.DLL - missing GetTraceEnableFlags - missing GetTraceEnableLevel - missing GetTraceLoggerHandle - missing RegisterTraceGuidsW - missing TraceEvent - missing UnregisterTraceGuids SHLWAPI.DLL - missing SHRegGetValueW - missing AssocGetPerceivedType SHELL32.DLL - missing SHGetFolderPathA - missing SHGetFolderPathW URLMON.DLL - many unresolved imports If you would like to use IE7 iert.dll it has the following unresolved references: KERNEL32.DLL - missing GlobalMemoryStatusEx SHELL32.DLL - missing SHGetFolderPathW It looks like really impossible to use IE7 core on Win9x OS. Petr
  22. The bug is triggered when both the sector with address n and the sector with address n+128GiB is written. Old LBA is 28-bit and can address 128 GiB only, it means that if you try to write address on position 128GiB + 1, the first sector of the HDD is written. This behavior is not related to partition size or data size, but if you have the first partition 128 GiB, then even few bytes in the beginning of the second partition can overwrite some data in the second partition. And what may happen? It depends on the fact what you will overwrite. If partition tavble, boot records, file allocation tables or directory entries are overwritten, then the HDD may become unaccessible or scandisk can find the errors. But if just some data are overwritten, scandisk will show no error and the only possibility to detect is to compare original and copied files. Petr
  23. no Petr. 4.00.1113 of ndis.vxd does NOT fix the Q312108 problems under ANY version of Win95. Why do you think this? I have analyzed the code and it seems that th 2.1 GHz problem was really resolved. Or have you tested the file and still got the "While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error"? Petr
  24. Have you found the download on the Microsoft website? You can find the download even of the full Windows 98 or Millennium on the web but it does not mean that it is legal to use it. Yes, you can accept the risk and rely on the fact that Microsoft will not take care about 6 years old operating system. But you should be aware of that. Petr
  25. Windows Me Scandisk and Defrag can work with PARTITIONS bigger than 128GiB, Windows 98 / SE Scandisk and Defrag can work with PARTITIONS smaller than 128GiB only. So for your setup it is not necessary to use Me versions - and if you don't have Windows Me license you should not use them. Where you got ESDI_506.pdr 4.10.2230? Both in the first post of this thread and on MDGx site are versions 4.10.2225 and 4.10.2226 only. Petr
