  1. lol ok, one more time... yes XP and 2003 both can be built into a WIM image, what i did for XP (bare with me as i wasn't the only one who worked on this in our org) we built our standard machine image, loaded all needed drivers and software packages that would be needed by defualt (office, adobe, pactches, java etc) sysprep of the machine and then a capture of the image via a PE environment means that you had a prepped image that can be deployed via a network source or a DVD/CD depending on the size of your image,
  2. yeah we did have that issue, but that part had been resolved (the looking for installation point problem) i have also foudn that a manual install will allow the patch to install fine, but i am not installing this thing 500 times (500+ fieldsales people).
  3. DGA, did you get any errors when you tried applying the WIM to you client machine? McStarfigther, Yes you could, but when vista RTMs in November they will be releaseing the WAIK and Pe 2.0 to the public instead of making it a purchasable item. might take over for bart at that point
  4. Xp works perfectly fine with the WIM image, our standard image with be in WIM format soon enough. the ability to just mount and adjust the image without having to recapture the entire image is a godsend.
  5. Yes, Both XP SP2 and Vista 5342, works well on both, Ximage capture will work on XP or vista machines, to edit a WIM files you will have to mount it in a Vista machine and the mounting feature of the latest WAIK does not work with XP. you can mount a image but not acess it
  6. L2tp with IPsec for security, EAP-TLS with certicate server for better authentication HOW TO: Install a Certificate for Use with IP Security check what ports need to be open with L2TP, also a nice page for RRAS on windows 2003 Remote Access
  7. if you want some that is company wide that everyone can access you may want to looking to WSS (Windows SharePoint Services) it works well as an intranet site to share files and such. also as cluberti said public folders will no longer be with us in E12, i do beleive there is a way to retain them if need be though, there are some webcasts at technet on E12 if you wanted to find out more on the public folders. but i would defiantly look into sharepoint services/ also office 2007 will have a sharepoint portal that will run just like WSS
  8. is this server a member server or a DC? if just a member server the procedure you gave should work right. for a better idea check MS's site for WSUS information
  9. another thing to take into consideration is what this server will be running. will it be on server 2003 R2? or SBS server (with 60 users you are better off with server 2003) is it going to run exchange or any other apps? just some things to think about when you plan out what you will need in a server.
  10. or at least have a system state backup
  11. learning to work with the new features would be better then just turning them off, you will have to use them eventually, or if not it then it is a wasted add-on that can really make your computer more secure.
  12. if you card supports aero which it should, you may just have to wait for drivers for it, aero will enable itself if your card can run it with the drivers it has. keep checking on nvidias site for drivers
  13. hi all, having some issues with a WSUS server and a particular update failing to install for some remote users. KB905756 is an excel patch that is not installing for my remote users when they connect to the server, the patch is making it to their machines but they are getting errors in the event viewer about unable to install, installer error code 1603. it is a fatal errror to install but no other information. i was able to get a machine in house and i found installing the patch manually as the admin would solve the problem, only issue is that all the field users and admins, they have been getting patches for several months now without issues, recently they were pushed SP 2 for office 2003 which as much of a nightmare as it was worked out well. my question is anyone else seening errors with this KB or have heard of an issue like this, i am off to the knowledge base after this post to root through there but i thought i would hit up this knowledge base first Thanks in advance
  14. under the security tab of the folder properties (this folder needs to be on a NTFS based partition for this to be there) set the group you want to have access to the share here and set their permission to read & execute, read, write, list folder contents. this will let them read the files and write to them.
  15. yeah, this is an issue witht the drivers aren't written for the new sound driver stack, it works but doesn't output sound, i have the same issue on and machine that has ac 97.
  16. i like my VB script but i agree, having a secondary account for admin rights if it is needed like a-<account> and there normal account would be nice. but to add a domain group to the local admin group wouldn't you need to provide credentials for the add?
  17. isn't DEP, UAC, and turning it off ruins all the benefits it brngs, read up on it here and since if you can make it liveable Windows Vista Security and Data Protection Improvements
  18. huh, i can disable both my cards fine, what kind of machine is it? i have tested dell D600s D610, GX 260, 270, 280, 520 all work without issue, all usining a broadcom or similar set for NIC chipset, i still think it is a driver issue but since some1ne said he had the same issue i am not so sure, @some1ne what kind of NIC are you using? now is the bridge even available to choose or does it just create a network bridge that is disabled?
  19. nope same error on 5308 and all older images, done on both vista and XP with ximage and filter installed. it s broke even built my own WIMs that install fine but don't work with the WSIM. i am expecting when Beta 2 comes out there will be a new version of the WAIK and it will work then
  20. memmnoch you have been waiting a long time to get all this out on kix haven't you....lol tis like a kid in a candy shop
  21. restricted groups would not be the way to do it, a startup script or or a logon script would be the way to go, more in depth.. adding those 3 groups to the restricted users will make ONLY those 3 groups able to be part of the admin group, if local users have to be (though they shouldn't be) then this won't work for you a logon script based like this might work for you Set g_oShell = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") 'Add AD groups to the local admin group g_oShell.Run "net use \\domain /user:<domain account> & """" & "<account Password>" g_oShell.Run "net localgroup administrators <domain-group>@<domain> /add"
  22. yeah if you can't find drivers off of kinstons site, you are SOL until they write some that will work with vista
  23. Can anyone get the wimfilter installed on vista?? i cannot for the life of me get the permissions change so i can copy the files to their proper locations, even as an admin on the box, this UAC is taking alot to get used to problem solved, installing as the admin takes care of it. you can't install info to the system32\* area even if you are a admin on the box. very crazy
  24. you can check under computer management to see if the IIS websites are still running. In computer management go under then services and applications, there you can see IIS (internt Information servies) go into the websites folder and you can check to see if it is running from there.
  25. @memmnoch, that is a pretty sweet tool, i wonder what downfalls that could be with reanimating things like that...i could see complications emass with that if it didn't happen right
