  1. Apparently, Red Hat removed the ability to read NTFS from Shrike due to "Licencing Issues" - but there's an RPM available (or you can rebuild the kernel) to add the feature.
  2. didya bug him? i still havent found a way to get NAV 2003 or 2004 to work with MSN 6
  3. M$'s own personal folders backup add-in for outlook can be found here, with a choice for outlook 2000+2002, or 2003.
  4. Yeah, it is a fine browser, I use it under win2003 and it's now replaced Mozilla itself under my mandrake linux. For anyone else's info, there's also Thunderbird, Firebirds' companion for news and mail, which again is good 'n' fast, without too many fripperies .
  5. I think the usual confusion is that (I believe) Office is licensed for use on 2 CPU's - but on the same computer (ie dual cpu). Some people see the 2 cpu reference and think it means 2 computers. For further info, see my sig.
  6. 32 - old enough to know better, young enough not to care
  7. Thanks Rik, it got me going in the right direction! Apparently, this problem is the result of the hardware ID on the installation being different from the hardware hash calculated for the current hardware (not sure how or why, as like I say, the only thing I changed was the filesystem of one partition from linux to bsd). It looks like the only solution is a repair install, (just in case anyone else ever gets this error.) Oh well, that'll keep me busy tomorrow. And, just in case anyone is wondering, no- FreeBSD wasn't worth all this hassle. That'll learn me..... <EDIT> Hmm, another site suggests that it could be caused by a change in the registry (here, about 2 clicks down) - I used a program called Registry Defragment from http://www.elcor.net/ on XP just before I rebooted to install FreeBSD. The further thought now occurs that maybe when it rebooted after the defrag, because I didnt allow XP to boot straight away, to save/replace/do whatever with the registry, I may have caused this. Anyone know if this could be caused by a reg. problem? I backed up the registry beforehand, but - dammit! - I used the same program to backup the reg, and it's created a few extensionless files that don't seem to be any use withiot the proggy (which of course I cant use cos I cant get in to XP)
  8. Hi guys, just wondering if anyone can throw a solution for my little problem at me. I was booting 3 o/s's, Mandrake 9.2, XP and Win 2k3, with grub being the first point of contact for selecting linux/windows, then selecting windows takes me in to the ms boot menu. All was well and good, until I decided to install FreeBSD 5.1. I changed the linux partition to freebsd native, and installed. The install went well, and on rebooting I now had (what passes for) freebsd's boot manager as first point of contact. Freebsd boots fine, and when I select win 2k3 from ms's bootloader, it works fine, but xp boots to the login screen (autologon enabled), just begins to load the desktop, and come up with "WPA. A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the licence for this computer. ErrorCode 0x80090006". Now as far as I can tell, this problem is caused by something to do with the target partition size. But as I haven't changed any partition sizes, merely changed the format, I don't understand it! I can't understand whats changed, so's I can try and fix it! I found a workaround on the MS website, deleting a couple of registry keys, but those keys dont appear in my registry! Before I put mandrake back on and hope that sorts it out, anyone have any ideas? I'm as interested in what's caused it nearly as much as how to solve it, so anything is welcome. (I wasn't sure where to post this, here, Linux or software, but went with here as its xp that doesn't work )
  9. Which game is getting most of your time at the moment? For me, Flight Sim 2004 - taking up around 4 hours a night on average.... (but the Mrs won't wear the stewardess uniform for me )
  10. Come on man, hassle that tutor! The same thing happens with NAV 2004, just the little greyed-out box. Bugger.
  11. It's a known problem with Norton, it won't support MSN Msngr over v5. The Norton 2004 betas didn't work with messenger 6 either, which suprised me a little, so it looks like you'll have to scan everything you receive individually. It's a bugger, isn't it?
  12. McAfee Virus Scan v7 Enterprise definitely works on 2003 Server - that's what I'm using.
  13. Winzip 8.x has trouble with zips over 2gb (from personal experience, that is), try winzip 9. Also, I think it's just about on the limit of the max filesize for Fat32 - give winzip9 a try, or failing that, use WinRAR (which gives better compression anyway). Failing that, just copy the files across unzipped. Best of luck
  14. OK, nice debate guys, but does anyone have any actual info for me? Is there anyone else using the v1039 SP? Or is it just me and Bill Gates?
  15. Yep, couldn't agree more. I hopped round different forums for quite some time, but once I arrived at MSFN the difference, as they say, was clear. Great site, great forums, the whole MSFN experience ( ) has become part of my day. I'm just glad to be a part of it. May it/we/they go from strength to strength.
  16. I've installed the SP1 v1039, but - silly me! - I don't know which fixes exactly it contains. Now this isn't such a problem in itself, but when I visit WindowsUpdate, it scans, gets to 100% and thats it - no message telling me whether there's anything to be downloaded or not. I downloaded the latest fix, (KB824146), but when I try to install it gives an error, that it may only be applied on an install without a service pack. Thing is, I don't know if this problem has been covered in the SP (I'm guessing not). Anyone else hit this problem, have a solution, or know what's actually in v1039?
  17. Well, according to the screenshots on www.extremexp.net, final build is.....da-da-da-dahhhhh....5606. Bugger, I wasn't even close. Ah well.
  18. The URL gives >> "The article you were looking for, is not currently available, or you may have mis-typed the address. Please check and try again, or return to the Search page to locate the article you need. View information on how to use search."
  19. Why not use this? 2003 Optimise Tool Much easier...
  20. Are you comparing Microsoft to God? Hmm, I don't believe in Bill Gates, either.... BTW, thanks for the reg. tip Aaron - sorted!
  21. Ok, first the question, then the possibly specious reasoning behind it. Do Windows XP (Pro) installs vary in stability? Now, on a semi-regular basis (approx 5 months or so) I have an unerring tendency to do something completely stupid - a bit of a speciality of mine when it comes to computers - and at that point I reinstall XP. In the first instance, the basic OS goes on, followed by SP1a (although now of course its one cd with sp1a slipped in - cheers guys ), and usually I won't update the rest of the hotfixes for a couple of weeks, if at all (well, just the criticals). Now in the intervening time, I've seemed to notice differences in the stability of the os - nothing major, but little glitches here and there. For example, no matter what I try (regfixes etc), xp currently insists on only remembering the settings for about 60% of folders at any given time, and not always the same folders either. Curious. Other things, like the refresh times of the desktop icons, this time round they're occasionally sluggish Last install was a 'perfect' install, with no problems i could notice at all. Has anyone else noticed this? Or is it time for me to start shopping for one of those white, long sleeve jumpers with the arms that tie at the back?
  22. Or you could just click here.....MSFN's Link to Sp1 v1039
