  1. I had a similar problem when trying to standby. I would standby the machine, but rather than it go into SB mode (power LED flashes orange) the power button would remain blue but my screen would go off. I found that if I left it a few minutes, pressed the power button (to "resume" the laptop) it would then come back on as if it was brought out of standby.

Im not sure, but I think the lack of being able to Standby is having "Away Mode" active so that my XB360 can always connect - its part of the Media Center setup.

  2. The main thing about Vista is the security. It's been significantly improved over XP (I'm not saying it's invinvcible by a long shot though). Also, the introduction of new networks stacks, which even on my home network I can tell the difference.

About the hardware though. You have to think at what computers could do when XP was released in 2001. They certainly weren't capable of what they are now. You may actually notice Vista will handle dual-core and quad-core CPUs better than XP.

So once momentum gets going with Vista, it will be ultimately quicker than XP on an equivelant setup.

  3. I'm on 5472 still. I actually use it now as my main OS - I seem to be one of the lucky ones where my hardware agrees with Vista. Only bad thing is the 3 minute boot up - which I can easily get used to now :P

@SmokeyTL: Where did you get 5520 from? AFAIK it's not been released yet - it certainly isn't on Connect anyway. I've heard Microsoft have put it into Escrow atm, with a release for testers being early September (4th I think???).

  4. Even if he follows this method, I'm still not sure he can properly install the 360 software. The 2 main packages for 360 is an XP SP2 version, and a heavier XP MCE version. If you install the MCE version on XP SP2 (pro/home) it would just install Windows Media Connect as it detected it was not an MCE install.

Best thing is to just go out and buy MCE 2005.

  5. When microsoft made the DVD available you had to pay for it (About £11. It had x32 and x64 DVDs, and they would also ship RC1 when it was ready), or you could have downloaded it for free and burned the ISO to your own DVD.

I think MS have now stopped this though as the uptake on it was incredible!

  6. Well, Blackcomb (Vienna) has been in the works since XP as part of the Whistler>Longhorn>Blackcomb programme. Not so long ago Microsoft released a new OS every 2-3 years. This is the longest time there hasn't been a new OS, but people weren't complaining before.

And Fiji is only really Vista R2 at the moment so not a big change.

  7. There definately is the possibility that with it being larger, naturally there will probably be more security holes. There is actually more to Vista than DX10 and it looks prettier. For one thing, I find the new networks stack amazing. I usually get plenty of trouble when using wifi in XP (it will disconnect for no reason, timeout - whatever!), but in Vista I can honestly say it's never cut off from the network. The only problem I do have is when the ADSL line screws up and the modem needs to make another connection.

As for Vista being a resource hog, I have to disagree. It is a NEW OS (AND still in Beta!). Remember when XP FIRST came out? Lets say we wait 3 years for hardware to improve. Only then can we make real comparisons to XP as it is now.

Just looks at the specs in my sig. I cannot afford a quick system, and tbh, I don't see the need in one. I don't game on PCs, I don't do CPU intense apps non-stop. BUT - Vista DOES run almost as quick as XP on it. Once the bootup has taken place (best part of 90secs atm) its fine.

@Kankipappa: I think you mean 4074. I agree though - that probably is my favourite build.
