  1. There are few good performance tweaks for XP. Most tweaks are for the gui/visual and/or application-/user-prefs. You can hardly notice any differance with many non-visual/gui tweaks. But using lots of those small tweaks can however add up and speed things up a bit. Tweaking the services can give a very nice increase in overall Windows-performance. It may however be a bit tricky and require quite some work to find out exactly which services you can disable, depending on your system and the way you use it. I've found out that you can set the prefetcher to 7 and get approximately the same performance (sometimes better and sometimes worse) as when it's set to 3 (tested with bootvis). Many sites recommend setting it to 5, but that is useless since it just disables the prefetch (some say it's faster that way). I've probably come across most known tweaks in my work (every now and then for more than three years) to make my own special tweak-file (and nearly perfect ua-cd).
  2. Have a PCI-card at hand to avoid having to blind-flash if something goes wrong... Since most cards (of the same model) are almost identical you can probably use other BIOS-files, just make sure you get the right version (PAL/NTSC and tv-out chip manufacturer) if you want the tv-out to work as supposed to (it probably applies to VIVO or similar too).
  3. Set "FriendlyTree" to "0" in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]. The setting can also be done in the gui, in folder options: "Show simple folder view".
  4. The purpose of this program is probably to be just what it is, a simple tool just for downloading updates! Integration/slipstreaming and/or installation can be done with other apps like nLite/HFSLIP/XPCreate (integration/slipstreaming) and Autopatcher/WindowsUpdate/WUtool (installation).
  5. Nice tool, but I would like to be able to download localized versions of the updates. I get the same error as seapagan and it won't continue even if I choose to do so.
  6. There is a list of hotfixes in this sticky. You can use HFSLIP or nLite to add the hotfixes. RyanVM:s pack contains all updates in one package and is said to be quite good, but I've never tried it because I use a non-english version of Windows. Add modified files if you feel like it, read what the files do and pick the ones you want. Personally I use modified versions of sfc_os.dll, tcpip.sys and uxtheme.dll.
  7. I've experienced a similar problem. In my case it was because the screen (TFT) on my laptop couldn't handle refresh rates higher than 60 Hz, do you use a flat screen? My guess is that it is driver related (if you added any drivers to the cd) or has something to do with RyanVM:s pack. Try remaking the cd without his pack or other add-ons.
  8. That's probably true, but those are the numbers you should take into consideration (and maybe add a little just to be sure) when getting a power supply.
  9. Never bought anything from them, haven't even looked at the rest of the site. I came across that link a few months back on some forum and bookmarked it, because I figured it might be useful... (I have like 1500+ bookmarks, and that's after a very thorough cleanup) I don't know if the calculations are accurate, but they seem quite reasonable. They are of course approximations, but should at least give a slight hint of how much power the system needs.
  10. Check out this site for a "power supply wattage calculator".
  11. You're welcome, glad to help!
  12. Remove (or comment out) the following from your .reg file. ; cmd prompt enhancements: tab key completes path+filenames, UNC checks off [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor] "CompletionChar"=dword:00000008 "PathCompletionChar"=dword:00000008 "DisableUNCCheck"=dword:00000001 You don't have to remove it, just replace the 8:s with 9:s to use tab (=default) as the completion character. More info here and here.
  13. You can re-enable it, it's just a matter of registry changes. Take a look at This site.
  14. Mostly Scottish/Irish/Swedish/Norwegian folk/traditional and patriotic music. But also some rock, pop, punk, classical, game music... Absolutely not: Hip-hop, rap, trance, dance, techno, jazz, r&b and other similar music types...
  15. I've made a selfextracting installer/uninstaller (using WinRAR) that does ALL the nessecary changes automatically (reg, replace winlogon, add ctrl-alt-del functionality, reboot). For some reason I can't attach it to this post (size?, it is 168 kB), is there anyone who is willing to host the file? (It is legal because the actual Minlogon-exe is not included, and the included files/tools are freeware.)
  16. @Boardbabe: I've tried both, but it doesn't work.
  17. Anyone? It's a lot less work by just installing it from RunOnceEx compared to the extraction and manual file editing in all the other methods.
  18. How do I do it using RunOnceEx? This is what I've come up with so far, but there is something wrong: REG ADD %KEY%\009 /VE /D "Windows Update" /f REG ADD %KEY%\009 /V 1 /D "%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Inst\WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce /quiet /norestart"" /f The placement and/or number of ":s is probably the cause of it failing to install. The rest of my RunOnceEx works just fine. Sorry to bring back this old thread, but I just couldn't find the info.
  19. MS Office Nero UltraISO BitComet eMule Quintessential Media Player VLC Firefox nLite WinRAR Ad-Aware VMware PerfectDisk 3DMark Foxit PDF Reader Daemon Tools ExamDiff +Some browser plugins, codecs, .NET Fw and more... Have you people noticed when this thread was first started?! (Take a look at the first post to find out, and yet the thread is only four pages!)
  20. What you really need to do: 1. Read The Forum Rules before posting. 2. Read The Unattended CD/DVD Guide. 3. Search before asking. Not to be rude, but that's the way it goes.
  21. nVnews.net - A tech info site, had it for years but may replace it with MSFN or some other tech news site. In FF also Yahoo!-Mail.
  22. Firefox, but I keep IE because some (very few!) sites work better with it. Firefox:s handling/placement of settings and bookmarks (files deep down in the folder structure compared to the registry and the userprofile in IE) is its biggest disadvantage.
  23. A small note of warning: The hotfix KB907658 can affect video-playback, after installing it the colours are not ok (sometimes b/w and sometimes just strange-looking). I don't know if it is the combination with FFDShow that does it, but after uninstalling the hotfix everything is ok.
  24. Don't use any colour, set it to be transparent!
  25. Exporting the key from the registry will work, partly. Set the pagefile as you want it in Windows and then export the reg-key (it cannot be set the way you think, by writing it manually). The pagefile will be set to the size you want, but it will use the absolute path set in the reg-file (for example drive/partition F:\). If you change the partitions the pagefile will not be set correctly. It can also be set using a batch to run pagefileconfig.vbs (in System32).
