Everything posted by DL.

  1. Yeah, it's temporary. Just forgot to write that.
  2. Read: Here Workaround patch
  3. There are lots of info/guides/articles on this site. You could also try searching for "WMV to DVD" or similar (in search engines and download sites). There are many different progs to convert videos, some are quite advanced and some are very easy to use.
  4. It may happen to everyone... I must admit that I'm a bit careful when posting if someone with lots of posts has already posted in the thread. I want to be quite sure that I'm right before replying to posts.
  5. I find the (unmodified) wheel of some mice (for example the MX-series) a bit too hard to click quickly when gaming. I use all buttons of the mouse and would like to have even more (easy to reach and click) buttons on it.
  6. The MX518 does not have side scrolling! The specs don't mention it and the wheel doesn't feel like it has. The mod just makes it easier to click. @Zxian: Did you remove both the weight and the spring of your MX500? It was quite an improvement, wasn't it!?
  7. Yes, there is. Just replace the file in i386, read more here.
  8. It ain't very difficult to do that mod (I figured it out myself when I read that it was possible to remove the weight in the MX500): 1. Open up the mouse as described for example here. 2. You'll see that the scrollwheel has two small springs, one on each side. 3. Remove the right (when the cord is pointing away from yourself) spring only, be careful not to accidentally remove the left one. (4. Optional: Remove some more screws to be able to remove the shell of the mouse for cleaning it if necessary.) As with most things, unscrewing a few screws won't damage it if you are careful.
  9. @ripken: By modified I mean that I've removed one of the springs for the scrollwheel in order to make it a bit easier to click. I'm not sure, but it may also be possible to replace the smooth surface of the MX518 with the one from a MX500.
  10. Nice set of mice you have there. When it comes to ergonomics MS IME 3.0 is one of the best mice ever made. G7 seems ok, but two thumb buttons is a definitive must. A slightly modified MX518 is the best mouse available today!
  11. No, I didn't write it. The entire Unattended Guide is a great source of information in one place, make sure you read it if you haven't already.
  12. There are positive and negative sides with both ways (few large files vs. many small files). I find it easier to have a few large files, maybe because I've worked with my main file every now and then for approximately three years and therefore know it very well. It also results in a lot less files to update/add. Don't you mean at T-12, not at T-9?! Many .reg-settings can be imported at T-12, but not all. The settings imported at that stage will affect all users since they are applied to the default user profile. Read the regtweaks section in the MSFN Unattended Guide.
  13. Why not use just Regedit instead of start /wait REGEDT32.EXE? Add some delay in the end and maybe somewhere in the middle just to be sure. There are a few ways to do this, for example by using ping or sleep. Why do you use that many files? I myself use one large file (6000+ lines) and a few small files for some extra apps.
  14. I recently ordered (yesterday, will get it tomorrow) a NEC ND-4551A, I did choose a NEC because their DVD-burners are recommended by many sites (and has been for a while). The drive has DVD-RAM support. I was going to wait for Blue-Ray or HD-DVD, but it will probably take quite a while until those technologies have matured and the prices have dropped. I will be using DVD-RAM to backup the most recently used files (weekly or daily) and DVD+/-RW for files that are not updated as often (when needed). DVD+/-R will be used to archive files (for example when the HDD is running out of free space). I also mirror the entire HDD to an identical drive montly. In the future I'll probably get some more HDD:s to keep the system and storage separated on different drives (and maybe RAID some of them). DVD-RAM discs are not as common as the other ones, but they should be available from some online-shop. The DVD-RAM discs are also a lot more expensive and slower to record. What you should choose depends on how much data you have and how often you plan on doing the backups. If you use your comp a lot (and change/update/replace files) you should do frequent backups.
  15. I agree with others saying that you should try to do something with the comp instead of moving it too far away. Moving it a bit is ok, I've got my comp 3 metres away. You can use another comp as a thin client... The performance will not be the same though.
  16. I don't use any AV, but I sometimes run some free online scanner. If you are careful with what and from where you download and use some free web-based email with built-in antivirus you should be quite safe. Also make sure your OS is fully updated at all times. Spyware/adware/malware and similar are a lot more common than viruses these days. Symantec AV is much too demanding and bloated, I will probably try NOD32 some time.
  17. I had the same BSOD:s as you are having a while back, and lots of them (a few times a day). The solution in my case was replacing the SB Audigy 2 I had, I haven't had any BSOD:s since then. Are you using any specific programs when the BSOD:s happen? Are you using the correct and latest versions of all drivers, firmwares and programs?
  18. Watercooling can also be quite dangerous for your hardware! I experienced a small leak (on the chipset-block) which damaged most of my hardware, I had to replace almost everything in the case (CPU, memory, hd, floppy and optical drives where the only components unharmed). I had to do some very extensive testing to find out exactly which components where damaged and which where not (some appeared to work at first, but I later found some problems that where quite hard to notice). The leak in the chipset-block was caused by using a more powerful pump than the one in the kit.
  19. I totally agree with exrcizn, no /:s in local paths! You could also try using foldernames without spaces. Putting .\ or just \ right before the path (.\Registry Tweaks\RegistryTweaks.reg) is another thing to try.
  20. Take a look in the event log after the installation has finished. You will find some errors/warnings related to that problem. Missing files is one common cause of Office-installation problems.
  21. That problem is caused by some updates for WMP10 in combination with some codec(s). I read somewhere at MS that it could be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the codecs, but that didn't work for me. I haven't put much effort in trying to fix that, but someone else probably has...
  22. Not all users do, and that's one of the reasons why their comps are slow...
  23. @Mr Snrub: One or two apps won't affect performance a lot, but if a user has installed many different progs that checks for updates it definitely will. Some common examples are: MS AU, Macromedia Flash, some PDF reader, Java, AV, software firewall and other security apps.
  24. @Andromeda43: The values you use are too small, it can cause apps to quit if they just happen to be a bit slow at some point. It's better to use like 4-5 sec. "LargeSystemCache" has been reported to cause errors/corruptions, many sites recommend against setting it at all for various reasons.
  25. @Jeremy: I agree with you that hardware is the most important part, keeping the comp clean from spyware/malware/similar is also very important. Most so called performance tweaks for XP are either fake/bogus, don't do much or even decrease performance and/or stability.
