  1. Dear @VistaLover, i only can affiliate this! But on the other side, it's my firm conviction that it's important to get a ,OS plan B' nowadays. I do know you for years now (from this forum), but i can't remember if you ever wrote about or mentioned linux. I personally once made a decision to not use Windows beyond 7 (aka 6.1). And today, after some failed attempts, a lot of frustration (a high level of frustration-tolerance is required!) and hard efforts (see above ) i can solemnly state: that was right! Whenever booting up, i can choose between XP, 7, and linux - and meanwhile i use the latter about 95% of the time. If you're interested how XP-ish (in looks and feel) a linux can be configured, (within minutes!) (but without being Windows of course!), simply ,like' this post, and i'll give you some screenshots of my desktop in a pm. If you say: no sorry / thank you / not for me / have it already - simply do not react to this post . Kindest regards!
  2. I think i'll never love linux (as i loved XP ) - please take a look at the log when i add the option --log-file=mpv.log: <log stuff> So, where the heck do i now have to put the mpv.conf finally? i found these lines too: [ 0.004][d][global] config path: 'scripts' -/-> '~.configtde/mpv/scripts' [ 0.004][d][global] config path: 'scripts' -/-> '~.mpv/scripts' [ 0.004][d][global] config path: 'scripts' -/-> '/etc/mpv/scripts' but if i copy the mpv.conf to '~/.configtde/mpv/scripts' i get the error (red font in the konsole): Can't load unknown script: ~/.configtde/mpv/scripts/mpv.conf - Wow! Ok, now i created a directory '~/.mpv' where i put the 'mpv.conf' into - e voila: the configuration finally applies! The CPU consumption is now at moderate 15 % for playing the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsSMmdwh89Y. Thanks @nicolaasjan - in this case tor ,compelling' me to investigate the problem further!
  3. Unfortunately no - these are in fact already the parameters you recommended me some months ago (in the palemoon/basilisk forum), i only added the [vcodec^=avc] now. For some reason, it seems that the options are ignored completely. The setting fs=no for example does not apply, and even with bestvideo[height<=720] the resolution is at a rediculous 3840x2160 (4K) - 16 times larger than specified: me@compi:~/Portable\> ./mpv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsSMmdwh89Y (+) Video --vid=1 (*) (av1 3840x2160 59.940fps) (+) Audio --aid=1 --alang=eng (*) (opus 2ch 48000Hz) AO: [pulse] 48000Hz stereo 2ch float VO: [gpu] 3840x2160 yuv420p AV: 00:00:20 / 00:16:59 (2%) A-V: 0.000 Dropped: 110 Cache: 12s/11MB i wonder why the options - apparently - do not apply here: both executables, yt-dlp and mpv - reside in '~/Portable' , and the config file is '~/.config/mpv/mpv.conf'. Not so much that i could have done wrong?!? Edit: Now i copied the mpv.conf in the directory of yt-dlp and mpv - no change!
  4. I've only a rough idea of the technical/copyright background, but i do not ,like' the libdav/dav1d AV1 codec of that video at all . Watching it on linux/mpv, no hw acceleration is possible on a relativ modern core i5 6600k and it even drives him hot (at load of about 60 percent!). One would have to throw away 8 year old hw and get a newer pc to watch it wihout heating up the house - not very sustainable!
  5. Many thanks again @j7n (and @nicolaasjan too!), indeed, that update (KB2533623 for kernel32.dll) fixed the specific problem of yt-dlp_win7.exe here (and probably some other issues that i hadn't discovered yet ). So, in case that Python 3.9 support of yt-dlp really would be dropped in october (god beware!), i'd be prepared ...
  6. Thank you too, @j7n, the installation of the kb4457144-x64 couldn't be comleted here, after 15 minutes there was an error "configurating the update" and it took another 15 min to (imperfectly) rollback, simply annoying... Maybe i'll come back regarding your kind offer later (with a pm), for the moment i'm done ... Win7 was only an intermediate step for me, and meanwhile i spent 95% of the time with Linux... and now: back to topic, as this is a forum for XP !
  7. Since i'm on a system with XP, Win7, Linux and Grub-bootloader, a disk image is a bit tricky - with identical partition uuids...
  8. I'm afraid: no (SP1 only) - Thanks for your assistance, i'll boot to 7 and check the dll version later. Tbh, i'm a little bit concerned and afraid (again) to install that update KB4457144 - 230 MB - who knows how much junk it will dump in an installation beside. i think to try it on a test disk before... Edit: the kernel32 is version 6.1.7601.17517 - from 2010
  9. Well, i get a system error: >The Procedure entry point "AddDllDirectory" wasn't found in "KERNEL32.DLL"< (translation by me). And in the log: [PYI-3000:ERROR] Failed to load Python DLL 'C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Temp\_MEI29362\python313.dll'. LoadLibrary: Die angegebene Prozedure was not found. So, highly embarrassed () may i ask: has Python to be installed in Win 7 first? But why does the XP version work here ootb in this case? For several years i'm using exclusively the zipped XP version (eg. yt-dlp_x86_Windows-XP.zip) on both XP/32 and Win7/64. And btw. (and off topic) the piece of Led Zeppelin you linked above is awesome, i saw them live, about 45 years ago
  10. Well, this was the very first time for me to deal with a an NVMe. And since the first (Win-XP) partition was already a clone, it had became somewhat ,personal', to a question of honor, to achieve a clean Windows installation on it. But anyway, what can you recommend, how do you clone Win-7 partitions? i once did such with (chinese?) Easus Parition Master (9.0), but it inserted a kind of hole in the extended partition (where the Win7 part should reside), so the destination partition was a little bit smaller (in comparison to the source) and the alignment was violated. Edit: And btw, welcome to msfn, @lso!
  11. Hello dear @nicolaasjan, after the latest quirks dropped by alphabet/yt, the long-term reliable yt-dlp of 2024-05-12 got some problems here (Error: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden), so i grabed your latest release - first on Linux - and it does the job bravely again. Awesome work, Many thanks!! Edit: Ok, this XP-32 build works perfectly on Win7-SP1/x64 (and i'll use it ruthlessly here) - whilst the dedicated Win7-builds don't. Can someone please explain in at most two sentences (just imagine i would be the CIO of your company ) - why this? Thanks!
  12. I've been utilizing Nakayama's HotSwap! for many years, it works greatly on XP. The icon residing in the taskbar is like the green one for usb devices, but red!
  13. As far as i can read, a good decision, a very solid & flexible case!
  14. i think there aren't offered many new models with these useful slots nowadays, maybe Antec does still offer such. But you may look here on kleinanzeigen: i myself use (since more than a decade) exactly this one here - not perfect but rather good. It seems be an Antec NSK4000: it has space for three 5,25" and two 3,5" devices. And i even removed the double usb2 in the front and replaced it with a switch, so i can easyly turn off the internal 2,5 ssd and boot to the externally plugged disk/ssd. And a happy new year @Dietmar btw! Edit: Here are offered two of these Antec's - for free
  15. Two funny (yet innocuous) effects here too: - rebooting from XP (with Realtek driver) to Win7 (standard audio driver) -> No sound (comes back after sleep and wakeup) - Cold start boot to Win XP (no driver for internal Graphic): some 20 seconds idleing on the boot screen; in contrast only 2 seconds, when doing a reboot from Win7 to XP. I suspect missing (or lousy implemented) initializations in firmware or drivers in such cases.
  16. The acpi.sys is in the zip/iso. One can integrate the ACPI-patch (for > 2016 intel mainboards) to any XP(32).iso with the patch-integrator script of the zip archive.
  17. Not that hard to find: google -> Ramsey Windows XP -> first link
  18. It took 2 hard and troubled days to achieve that installation and it went unlike described the most guidances i found in the web. I did have a USB installation stick (Windows 7 x64) with USB3 drivers already Dism-integrated (with which several installations on standard SATA SSDs went well before). As preliminary, i copied the file C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi (of a running system) to the USD-drives \EFI\BOOT\ folder and renamed it bootx64.efi (bcause it was missing on mine, see here). It needed two different .inf NVMe drivers from Fernandos's NVMe driver site: - Phison's (WHQL-signed) "pure" generic 64bit NVMe driver v1.5.0.0 (link) - and the (unsigned!) original NVMe driver for Samsung’s NVMe SSDs (link) 1) Copy the (four) files of the Phison generic driver to the Inst-USB (for example in a folder x_Phison) 2) Dism-integrate the Samsumg driver to install.wim (section 3 "Professional" in my case). Since the Samsung's driver isn't signed, you have to use the option /ForceUnsigned. Only that single driver and only to install.wim, nothing else! No KB2990941-v3, no KB3087873-v2: Integrating those hotfixes always made the setup impossible because then it asked for CD-/DVD drivers at the very beginning of the setup, so it wasn't possible to start the insallation at all. All other NVMe drivers (including the Phison generic!!) that i integrated to install.wim did cause a 0x0000007B bsod at the first boot after the installation! That's it. Set the Boot-Mode to UEFI in the Z170 motherboards Bios and start installing Windows. When it comes to the point where the target-partition is to be selected, simply load the Phison driver from the stick: it recognises the 970 NVMe and its (before prepared MBR) partitions perfectly so you may select the target-partition for Win 7 and finish the installation. In my case it even was a a dual-boot situation: beside Windows XP on the primary partition I found one other guy (AbsoluteZero, here) who had a very similar situation. Maybe this small guidance may help to avoid big efforts, trouble and frustrations in the future for some others... Good Luck, M.
  19. Sice the discussion is getting more and more ot, here is my ot contribution: there's a new hymn for Serpent: https://clementnourry.bandcamp.com/track/serpent-2
  20. Yyyess and many thanks again @Dietmar! It did take some time for me to remember, that my nice&cheap Chieftec LT-01B indeed has a hole in the assembly area for the mobo. So it was easyly possible to mount the 970 Evo and (Xx)clone the XP system partition (from a backup harddisk) on it. To be on the safe side, i cloned the mbr and bootsector to the NVMe too. Never saw XP booting fast like that , but i was quite nervous if it would boot up the Z170 Lenovo Yoga too... well, it does! Exactly 12 (twelve) dialogs of new hardware appear, the screen res (2560x1440 native -> 1024x768) is horrible, and there is no sound: unfortunately the engineers opted for a Conexant Soundchip and i haven't found an appropriate driver for XP (one for older Lenovo notebooks didn't work). But hey, i'm so happy to have a booting and working XP partition on the Yoga initially, now boring Win7 and Debian can follow for a nice tri-boot... Edit: But what the heck is the cause for that halt during installation then, if a system - created with the same USB-install-stick - does run flawlessly once copied ??
  21. Did you try: Edit -> Folder Properties -> Repair Folder ? This saved my a.. lately (in context with threads).
  22. Many thanks @Dietmar: Now that i read your reply i think to remember, that you've chosen such an approach in the past months too... I do not have the equipment to make an install on a normal harddisk for this notebook, but a similar z170 board here, the Gigabyte Mini-ITX z170, and i could try to (Xx)clone the XP partition to the NVMe. Unfortunately it's m.2 NVMe interface is on it's backside (unaccessable at the moment) - but maybe i can utilize an adapter like this: https://www.delock.de/produkt/62864/merkmale.html Currently there is an offer of such an adapter at "kleinanzeigen" (for 4 Euros )... Have a nice day!
  23. Hello, i'm trying to install XP-32 SP3 on a 2016 Lenovo Yoga X1 20FQ (1, Gen) with Intel Skylake-U PCH, Core i7-6500U cpu, internal HD520 graphics and an M.2 NVMe (970 Evo). I (erroneously) thought this should be a simple routine, since the installation on a similar (Gigabyte Z170, Core-i5) system went absolutely flawlessly, but there occured several issues (additional info's below), Currently the installation process halts after i confirmd the dialog "Computername and Admin-Password". There is "No Response" (see picture below). @Dietmar and all other specialist: is here a possibility to identify the problem? Has anyone else had a halt at this special state before? Many thanks in advance! ----- I actually utilized the same USB stick wich worked perfectly on the Gigabyte system with a standard SSD: a (german) "Patch-Integrated (2023) v3.4.6 (2,3,4,5,A,B,C,H)" 32 bit iso. In the first two runs i had problems at the "34 minutes" state. (Interesting enough: after opening the console and studying the results of setupapi.log carefully i discovered, that the installation hadn't stopped at all, it had become only ridiculously slow!) To pass that phase of the installation i - deactivated any peripherals possible (Camera, Bluetouth, Network, Cardslots, etc, even Hyperthreading) - as well as Intels Virtualisations - set anything to "Legacy over UEFI" i found in the (Phoenix) Bios - and copied the complete i386 installation folder on a free partition of the NVMe. Btw. i partitioned the NVMe in MBR mode, since a prior attempt with gpt partitions failed completely at the very beginning: they weren't recognised by the ,patch integrated' installer. The Windows, Programs and "Documents & Configuration" folders are present. Trackpad, USB3 slot (in which i put the install-stick in), keybourd and a mouse are working without any issues. The HD520 and the screen (native res is 2560x1440) are emulating the lower resolutions nicely.
  24. Concernes MailNews: A month ago i received a mail (a) with important conent. Yesterdy i forworded that mail to another recipient. That recipient now responded to me - mail (b). This new mail (b) now was shown in mailnews only ,under' the first mail (a). But those two senders (of mail (a) and (b)) have nothing to do with each other, so i wondered how to dissolve that unmeant connection. I tried right-clicking on both mails and tried "Ignore Thread" and "Ignore Subthread". But nothing happend. After having restarted mailnews later i noticed that both mails now are away. Not in the trash but really away. Luckily both mails still reside on the server - (how) is it possiple to reload them? And for the future: is it possible to dissolve such unwanted threads safely? Edit: under Inbox -> right-click -> Properties there's a button "Repair Folder" which resolved the issue! But the question - is it possible to seperate mails from an unwanted ,thread' - remains: those two mails have nothing to do with each other...
  25. Thank you @Jody Thornton, MailNews(32 bit) runs nicely in both of my Windows environments, XP/32 and Win7/64, but i'll try out Epyrus anyway - since it seems to be maintained slighty stronger.
