INI or SYS files are not realy "drivers". They are settings. That confirm what I said, there are no driver for monitors, but I agree that there some files to add in some case. Anyway the output depends from the graphic card. Normaly special monitors should come with a graphic card.

I'v worked a lot this week end on the w98 System Back Up Script project. It's still not a System Restore program, but it already makes pretty good back ups of the system files. I hope to post a simulation version in few days. I still need to run a few tests before. While working on it, I have also improved the Installed File Checker script (click on my signature to go to the download/update page), that wil be the cornerstone of the whole project.

Eck, The concept of partition apeals to notions of computer chirurgy that I'm not very familiar with such as raw data copying and so on. What I can do is resotirng files from a batch file launched via autoexec.bat and then launch the registry restore app also via autoexec.bat. Maybe in dos mode or on a bootable CD too. There are tons of unexplored possibilities but that's for the future. However, the creation of restore points will have to be done under windows, at least for the moment. The scriptware I will propose is already able to exclude or include the folders of your choice and already suggests in its dialog with the user, to exclude folders such as temp, recent etc... A file filtering is already in action to discard files above a certain size or of certain extentions. More filters can be added or changed easily in the code and I could easily make an ini file to allow the user to modify these filters if necessary. In the future I plan to port my script(s) to the more graphic and user friendly HTA interface but all this takes time! ______ Everybody: Thanks for your encouragements. Maybe this monitor is adapting itself automaticaly from the signal it received from the graphic card, then kept these settings. The w98 machine may had an old graphic card that didn't send good signal to the monitor and prevented it to adjust. The XP machine, obviousely running on more recent hardware sent a signal that was interprretad properly by the monitor for auto-adjustment. It's not XP or w98, it's the hardware that comes with it. Indeed there are no driver for monitor, keyborad, loudspeaker, microphone or mouse. Maybe you would want a driver for the case? I'm sure some manufacturer have thought about that yet!

Thanks Andromeda for your suggestion. My program will actualy save and restore installed files. (Scanreg save and restore only the registry) My program will not save or work on the registry. Only on files. Then I could add a few stuffs from your boot disk into some batch file. I intend to use autoexec.bat to launch this batch files. For the moment I'm working on the 1st step: saving files which has changed since the last restore point. When this will be ok, I will work on how to restore those files and maybe other stuffs like the registry. Suggestions are welcome.

Despite the availability of Second Chance and whatever you can say, I will keep on with my system back-up script project. It will be fast, small, easy, open-source and with very litle overhead for each restore point. I won't say more for the moment.

I'm working on a script program combined with my "Installed Files Checker" to create "system back ups" and "restore points"... since I manualy erased a filthy virus from my PC with the infos given by Installed Files Checker. (eventualy runing a batch file in dos mode and completing the task by a registry resotre, also in dos mode). So I think I can do something useful out of that. Such driver should emulate one core while working with two. That could be very complicated and unstable. or use w98 + some apps with one core and other apps with the other core. The second core would work as separate hardware, like the processor on your graphic card. That would not exploit the full resources of both cores all the times when only one app is running. But dual core on xp already don't use the full capacity all the time and is already working somehow like that. IMO, with the second solution it should be possible to create something different that would fit on w98. What you need is only a team of programmers working full time during a year.

Maybe you should update to a higher version of windows media player and to the latest IE version + updates available for w98. See laso all the other patches, fixes, uSP2.01a and so on to make your PC up to date. I would start by this. If the above doesn't work try Ctrl+Alt+Delete and kill the task manualy. That will avoid you to press the reset button.

You didn't understand my question. I often, almost always, open the My Documents folder from Explorer (or Explorer2 when installed). Then I have two choices: 1/ opening the My Document special tree 2/ opening C: then My Docmuent. I aften choose option 2/ because it's clearer to me when I need to move things from other places to My Document, for example from a removable drive. I have also videos in a folder that is outside of My Documents because I was fed up of always opening My Documents to reach this folder. There is also the Windows and the Program File folders where I go regularly. With Explorer2, it's even more obvious because it's set to open the last accessed folder. I like to "go up one level" to move to another folder or drive. That's why I like to see the real tree as it is. And that's why I don't like the Document and Setting structure in XP. Do you or other computer users have the same behavior? Is it possible to get rid of the Document and Setting crap in XP and have a C: tree that looks like W98 (admitting there is only one user)?

I agree with all the above, guys. XP is NOT a bad OS (excpet when i'm talking to Link21), it's just that we had to wait 2006 for all the SP's fixes, patches and tweaks that makes XP pallatable. But, wait... w98SE also has improved a lot since XP has been released...

One question: Are you, like me, opening the "My Document" folder via the C: folder tree or via the "My Document" special tree? I find the "My Document" special tree pretty useless.

It would be VERY COOL to use your autopatcher as a sort of system restore: checking everything.

Someone should start a XP-as-W98 project. A post installation script to disable all the make-it-look-slower options and make-it-realy-slower services and craps to make it behave like a w98 OS. Not sure if it belongs to w98 or Xp forum...

I use AviUtl which I find better than virtual dub for editing (cuting, cropping etc) But it doesn't always handle all formats and all filesize correctly nowadays. Worth a try anyway, it's free. Virtual Dub is also an excellent tool for video capture. Modern computers can easily capture in MS mpeg4-V2, DivX or Xvid without dropping frame. While MS mpeg4-V2 may be the safest as frame drops are concerned. Capturing sound directly in mp3 is not recommanded for synchronization reasons but converting only sound with virtual dub afterward is very fast and easy. IMO, mpeg-2 is only useful if you want to save your vid on DVD. HTH

I spent 3 weeks away from home and the only PC I sued was the one of my father: an XP platform. Not that I can't work on XP but... when I came back home and switched on my w98SE, everything looked so easy, so clear, so simple.... what a relaxation for the mind! For example I can browse MyComputer, click on C:, then My Documents and I'm in (guess what?) my document folder! I almost forgot how such a difficult operation (reaching your user's My Documents folder through browsing the drive tree) on XP, was so easy on w98! Then I wanted to make a demonstration of my last HTA toy: the software compilation browser (look at my site in my sig if you want to check it out). Basicaly it's an HTA working like a webpage and displaying the content of a cd, the way I like, with textes etc... Worked like a charm on w98. Worked terribly slow on XP! And it's full of small things like these...

Prob' I play avi, mpeg and wmv with FastonePlayer. Never used asf... I deleted the wmp executable from my pc a long time ago (to avoid uncontroled lauch opf it)

Problemchyld, I don't think that removing a few files will tremendousely enhance the system performance, unless you have a very old and slow HD and very low memory. The best way to speed WMP is not to use it.
