  1. I went to my local PC shop and they didnt have a clue which card will work on this GX270. They couldnt open any either as i told them its around half the size of a normal AGP card. The PC im referring to is http://www.westworldcomputers.com/images/D...%20(Medium).JPG so can anyone give me a specific model name so i can buy for this PC? Thanks
  2. I know on XP if you modify the registry mainly MenuShowDelay you can speed up the start menu. I cant figure out a way to speed up Vista's menu as i have to hover over the folder for a couple of seconds before sub folders open. Any way around this? Thanks
  3. Thanks for that.....but aware of that problem as we had about 30 PCs with the same problem - hopefully this one doesnt
  4. Can someone advise a decent AGP graphics card that can be used to run Vista on a Dell Optiplex GX270 (desktop)? nothing too flashy just something to have Aero etc up and running for development purposes. Thanks
  5. As well as checking the above, what i usually do is set the server to sync with an external source (search for an NTP server on the net) then have a policy that points at the server for all other PCs to sync their clock with. Usually run this command on the server: • w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:NTP_server_IP_Address,0x8 /syncfromflags:MANUAL • net stop w32time • net start w32time • w32tm /resync
  6. I'm familiar with GP, I just need to know the path of where to configure such things. I can never find anything in GP GP is huge so you need to take your time and read it to understand what it will do otherwise youll get into problems. As a start you can create an OU (Organisational Unit) and attach a GPO to it. Then look at these settings: User Configuration - Windows Settings - Scripts - Use this to add a startup script if needed or create a script to run IE. User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows COmponenets - Internet Explorer: This will allow you to customise IE and block features you dont want end users to play with User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows COmponenets - Windows Explorer: Also may have settings you want to play with i.e. Turn off Windows hotkeys otherwise users may open apps you possibly could have hidden User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Start Menu and Taskbar: Remove the clock the All Programs list from the start menu etc User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Desktop: Read this to customise the desktop i.e. disable it so users cant save to it etc This should help you get a started in the right direction. Keeping in mind you can do this in different ways too it all depends on how you have your network setup and test it on a test PC before rolling it out live, remember you will have different options if you use Vista.
  7. Actually i do....didnt think about that so would i need to stop DHCP and DNS on the router? I have some clients using that router to connect to the internet too anything i need to do to keep them having access to the internet? or would it all be fine? Thanks
  8. If you know how to use group policy then this can be done, my first guess to set a webpage as a desktop background would be to disable the desktop and the have a script that launches IE at startup (of course you setting the home page) you can then configure it so they cant close IE (and have it in full screen) or do anything other than whats needed. If your new to GP check this out http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...cy/default.aspx and have a play around in a test environment otherwise i dont think you can remove the start button - although you can remove All Programs menu and use GP to tighten it up. Hope this makes some sense
  9. In a test environment i have setup DHCP on a server. On the client machine i attempt to log on and check to see if all the settings are being applied. On my first attempt only some settings are applied. On second attempt all settings are applied. Later on i decided to do an Ipconfig /all and the settings change - below is what i have setup (one server manages DNS, DHCP on is the test domain): Server side settings (DHCP under scope options) Router: 192.168.1.1 DHCP: 192.168.1.2 DNS: 192.168.1.2 DNS Domain name: Test.local Wins: 192.168.1.2 Client Settings Router: 192.168.1.1 DHCP: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1 DNS Domain name: Test.local Wins: 192.168.1.2 Can there be a reason why the settings in bold change? Is there a way from group policy to do something about this? Thanks
  10. Good news!! made a copy (using CDClone) and all worked without any missing files
  11. Bad News - Microsoft explain it will take a few days before i can receive a replacement disk for ws2003 Good News - Following my previous post i eventually found WS2003 CD Bad News....Its corrupt, i cant copy any files. Good News - I also made a slipstreamed copy of Ws2003 + SP1 when released using N-Lite Bad News - I installed the server using this copy but it produced these errors: Could not copy: diskcopy.dll dplayx.dll dvdplay.exe dxdiagn.dll luna.mst pld.dll srgb.icm wowfax.dll wowfaxui.dll usbintel.sys One final error i received was something to do with iconfiglibrary (internet config library) but i pressed enter before i could read the whole error message ( ). So can anyone give me some good news about whether i need these files or not or should i just copy them from another WS2003 OEM disk and what could the error message about iconfiglibrary would have been about? Ive not installed SP2 just yet but any thoughts on this would be great. Thanks in advance
  12. definately a good strategy - only thing that has cheered me up today
  13. Retail product key but i have a OEM disk with OEM licenses (which of course i cant use) but could i use this disk and retail prod key or am i wasting time?
  14. Data will likely be missing from your domain - not sure what, but esentutil is usually able to "fix" database corruption, but does so by discarding corrupted data in most cases. You could be missing user accounts, unable to start services, etc. Not only that, but once you have to resort to esentutil to "fix" a corrupted AD, it's no longer supported by Microsoft as it could be tainted (due to corruption) in any number of ways. Again, in the event esentutil allows you to boot normally, consider the installation "broken" from then on until you can bring up a new DC as a global catalog server, move the FSMO roles, replicate a few times, and dcpromo the old DC down. Once you've done that, go over your AD with a fine-toothed comb and make sure everything (and I do mean everything) works. This would also be the time to backup your GPOs with GPMC, make a backup of your AD, etc. http://www.petri.co.il/transferring_fsmo_roles.htm No, backing up the .dit file is unnecessary. Follow the backup strategies on technet instead: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727048.aspx Usually file system corruption, or the writeback cache on the raid controller wasn't written to disk successfully, or your antivirus product scanned the file and corrupted it, etc. Too late for that - unless you've already backed them up with GPMC, you'll find they may or may not work on the new DC. You can try, but don't expect it to work - the GUIDs for everything in your new domain won't match the old, and it will likely simply ignore the old policies. Ill have reinstall the whole server.....and to add to my missery our Server CD seems to be missing. Although i have the product key. Is it possible for me to download a trial version of Enterprise edition and use my product key? If i remember correctly? or am i going to have further problems?
  15. 1. I did read about that so ill try those tricks tonight..... 2. What kind of problems could i expect assuming this works? 3. How do i move FSMO roles? 4. Overall should i backup the NTDS.dit file on our seperate SBS server to ensure this problem doesnt occur (this is a seperate server that i think ill take more precaution with)? 5. What could have caused this problem? Finally if the above doesnt work am i right in saying that ill have to rebuild the server? If so can i backup the GPOs and import them if worse comes worse? Thanks
  16. No unfortunately the only backup i have is user files and nothing on the C drive of the server
  17. For some strange reason i restarted our server and i couldn't boot!! I received a message few seconds into booting: LSASS.EXE - System Error, security accounts manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Services cannot start. Error status 0xc00002e1. Please click OK to shutdown this system and reboot into directory services restore mode, check the event log for more detailed information. Ok now i get into the system via restore mode and run ntdsutil which gives me an error when i run the command ntdsutil "sem d a" "go f". The error i receive is Failed with jet error 501. Reading about this some say its a corrupt database and i may need to restore it from backup???? Problem is the C drive is never backed up only user files are (im guessing the backup is referring to C:\WINDOWS\NTDS\ntds.dit) . So before i go any further does anyone have any ideas/advice on what i could try?? Thanks
  18. I done that but i get the message "The runas command is not supported"????
  19. Thanks for your reply - what console are you referring to?
  20. Is there a way around to run lets say internet explorer as a standard user when your logged in as a standard user? Assume I have 2 standard users: Standard user 1 Standard user 2 I would like to run a program as standard user 2 when im already logged in as standard user 1. The same question also applies to Outlook. In XP using office 2003 i use to run outlook as another user (standard user 2 when logged in as standard user 1) so i viewed user 2 emails when logged in as user 1. Hope that makes sense Thanks
  21. Is there a way via group policy to change the look of the login screen as its pretty iritating when i have to type the full domain then the user. I prefer it to be a bit like XP where i just type in the name, password and pick the domain i want? Cheers
  22. Ok i did read the manuals for both without luck but have got a bit further since i reseted the new router. I have successfully set up the internet connection but on the old router i have Public Network then it has an EXTERNAL IP address along with a subnet. I found out that this is the external default gateway for us. Now in general terms i would have thought this would have been the WAN default gateway (on the new router) but i only have inbound and outbound filter. The manual doesnt give much of an explanation but overall i would have forwarded this external IP address to our server's local IP but the old router doesnt seem to have anything being forwarded. So should i risk it and see what happens or am i missing something here? The way i come to this is by pinging our IP address (local) for the router - i get a reply - place the new router instead of old (same IP address) and dont get a reply. I then think maybe its because the firewall may have blocked it so went into the browser to the routers homepage and still no luck. thanks
  23. I have 2 routers and want to make a backup of it incase it ever goes down. Im confused with some of the terminology used on each router. As a start the old router has a "Public router address" and the new router has no such thing but it has inbound filter along with the options: Filter Name: Protocol: TCP/UDPTCPUDPICMP Source IP address: Source Subnet Mask: Source Port (port or port:port): Destination IP address: Destination Subnet Mask: Destination Port (port or port:port): Would you agree these two are the same? my new router is a d-link 2740B http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=gNTyP9CgrdFOIC4...DrpySdA/4kBB9o= Thanks
  24. I have a VPN connection configured on XP - i do the usual and it connects fine without problems. I then create a connection in Vista - same details etc but returns back "Failed to connect to VPN Connection" - not sure why as no other errors are generated but do i need to do something extra in Vista? Ive tried this on 2 Vista PCs and the same error appears. Thanks
