  1. I have 100+ folders which have incorrect casing on a shared drive on a WS2003. I would like to have all folders that have all upper casing to be changed to Folder (first letter capital and reminader lower case)- any easy way that this can be done? Thanks
  2. From my experience i found that you have to have the right balance with OU, GPOs etc. We have something like: Admin Sales Purchase Human Resource IT Finance For each department i have two further OUs, Computers and LaptopUsers. I have one separate policy that is applied to all Computers, Users and laptops. Then i use "security filtering" and apply certain settings to certain users. Maybe this article can help http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_...-Filtering.html
  3. You have to install SP1 for VS2005 then the Vista update finally checking windows update for any other patches. This will allow you to run but in reality you still need to use the Administrator account (or an account with admin rights) to run VS2005 (right click VS2005 icon and choose run as).
  4. I have 1 user with 2 user accounts. My idea is to allow this user to have 2 accounts (one for XP and one for Vista) but to allow them to use the same "my documents" and H drive (home drive) when he logs on or at least for his H drive and documents to be copied over and analysed so any documents that have not been copied to one folder will be copied to the other folder. Hopefully that makes sense. Any recommendations? thanks
  5. The defrag screen is useless compared to XP where it at least showed what percent it was done and showed colour co-ordinated files etc etc. In Vista this isnt the case any reg tweak or something to have it like XP or am i stuck with it? thanks
  6. Im trying to understand Activation and installation ID. When you activate windows vista (possibly xp too) it asks you to send an installation id consisting of 50 numbers i think. You also have to have a valid PID before installing. My question is anyone can have one product key but a different installation ID therefore windows can be activated on 2 pcs even if you have one license or PID - is this the case or how does the installation ID know what the product key is to activate? or if im completely wrong please explain. Thanks
  7. I think you use vista, isn't it ? For WinXP, I use that code netsh interface ip set address name="Local Area Connection" static IP MASK GATEWAY netsh interface ip set dns name="Local Area Connection" static DNS Replace IP by IP adress of the machine Replace MASK by mask Replace GATEWAY by ip gateway adress Replace DNS by ip of dns If your asking me if i use Vista (due to my question from previous post) - then yes and no by that i mean we do have vista but the problem is only relating to xp PCs - heres another twist to the problem these PCs use static IP addresses so i really dont want to touch that part and only the Gateway config - is that possible? If it is possible do i need to run netsh interface ip set dns name="Local Area Connection" static DNS as the DNS config is fine?? Thanks
  8. Thanks strangely when i get to the netsh interface> prompt, it doesnt recongnise ipv4 - but ipv6 s listed when i type "help", kind of lost here Also i cant run this as a batch script. I think i need something similar to sendKeys so when the script sees Netsh it presses enter to get into the sub text for interface (think SendKeys is for vbs)- maybe im wrong but some guidance needed here. Thank you
  9. Hello all Looking for a quick solution to this. I want to change the default gateway on all the PCs (running XP) from what it is to another address. I dont think you can do this by GP and unforunately we dont have DHCP setup so i guess its got to be done by script. Can anyone help here? Thanks
  10. Im just wondering is their a way to create a MMC which ONLY displays services that i want? mainly Exchange Server? Thanks
  11. Ok what if i take a different approach - is there a way to stop a user logging onto a certain machine by their user name? i.e. User WinXP WinVista ------------------------------ John Y N User can logon to XP but not vista machine John N Y User can logon to Vista but not XP machine This way i can give the user a separate username for vista as its not fully deployed yet. Thanks
  12. I have 1 user that uses WinXP and Vista. I want him to use the same details as he would when he logons to XP and when he logs onto Vista - currently he has the settings i want for XP but when he goes onto a Vista PC they dont takeeffect even when i have configured Vista settinsg settinsg from a Vista machine. Can anyone advise? Thanks
  13. Sorry im lost please could you explain? Thanks
  14. Trying to do an admin install of office 2000. When i type d:\setup.exe /a it automatically creates the admin install on the root of the C drive. I dont want it to do that i want to pick the location where it installs. How can i specify the location? ive tried d:\setup.exe /a "location" but that doesnt work. Thanks
  15. Is Citrix part of Windows Server family? What does it do and what are the advantages - any help is appreciated. Anyone know of any good starter sites for Citrix in case its something i need to know about? Cheers peeps
  16. never mind i added that script to the PC logon starup script.
  17. Im trying to add a route to our network i.e. route add <ip add> mask <subnet> <ip add> /p this works as an admin but fails as a standard user (due to them being non admins) so how can i overcome this as i dont really want to make them into admins? Cheers
  18. Is there any Windows XP application that i can use to convert pages of text to audio?? thx
  19. Im tring to install Small Business Server Service Pack 1. Ive installed Windows Server SP1 without problems then KB891193. Came to installing SP1 for SBS it first gives me the error that i need SP3 for MSDE for compatibility i press ok and it continues with the installation. Few minutes later it comes back as failed and advises me to check C:\program files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\Update\Log\setup.log to check for any errors - but no file exists at that location. So Do i need to install SP3 (or even SP4) for MSDE in order for the installation to continue? Is there any way to find out why the installation failed? Ive checked the event viewer and just notes the installation began. Thanks
  20. If you download the Resource kit for 2003 there will be a program available to create a PST file. This needs to be integrated with your installation so when the user logs on it will automatically input the server name etc. Ive not done this with 2003 but have done it with 2000. You'll probably need to read the help file for a better picture of what you need to do when you download the Resource kit.
  21. What an idea!! Only thing is i AM the IT department and i need some way to allow users to create these connection without me making them into an admin!! Hope that helps
  22. Is there any policy that allows me to autorise which add-ons can be installed rather than me going to the PC logging on as admin and then installing it?
  23. In our organisation we have a policy where no one is an administrator (except for IT of course) but one annoying thing is some users of laptops have to go out and about and stay in hotels. They then decide to try and configure thier wireless connection i.e. create a new connection but get an error asking them for admin rights - is there a way around this without giving admin rights? Remember this connection can be changed any time as they do travel so i would like them to create and use wireless connections without giving admin rights. Cheers
  24. Sorted it!! in a nutshell apply two security updates KB 872769 and 842933 (info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/872769) i did forget to mention that this was tested on a SBS system which i didnt think it owuld have made this difference.... :-(
  25. Yes definately sure that domain policy is applied as standard is "not configured". The strange thing is the policy is applied as when i check the firewall settings i see File and Print sharing ticked on the PC. But when i try to get access to that PC via IP or name it doesnt allow me (neither can i ping) but soon as i turn off the FW service it all works.
