  1. I have not spoken in cafe for while after moped lost control in this thread (means something went out of hand), but seems things calmed down. Today when I logged in I noticed this. Well I always said all things need to come to end but did not expect this . I wanted to donate but issue is that I do not have credit card or any banking card with enabled support for online transactions since where I live all is done with cash or wire transfer based on IBAN numbers. I also wont have anyone who credit card or paypal to borrow to do it. I asked if that would have been possible way do donate since MSFN last year but I never got any answer. Still I am willing to donate to MSFN if I just got way. Well if this is actually end this board been great and I felt to be part of community here, people with same type of ideologies. I met many great people here. There likely will never be community like this again. People from around globe, many are interested keeping older systems alive, actually helpful answers etc. If this is farewell I let this song be my goodbye to board https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POuOWRmjl0w translation to that song is here: https://lyricstranslate.com/en/kaunis-luoksesi-kaipuu-my-longing-you-beautiful.html
  2. Totally possible. I got ProxhttpsProxy running network using raspberry pi and before it was running network wide on Windows. On RPI I used one version which was not wrapped in exe file rather python script. I try look that up. But for Windows all you need is install ProxhttpsProxy like normal, you can do it on Windows 10 too and allow in and outbound traffic on firewall. Then you set Proxy for host IP address with port 8079. For example if your VM ip addresses are 192.168.10.5, 192.168.10.24 and 192.168.10.21 and Windows 10 host running proxy is on IP 192.168.10.20 you set proxy address to be 192.168.10.20 and port 8079. I have done it many times and never had any issues. I recommend set static ip to machine hosting proxy though to avoid address changes
  3. For me only stable drives been forceware 23.11. Older drivers got issue with video playback or they keep crashing and newer ones I lose FPS on Star Trek Elite Force. Also I should mention I updated directx to 2006 version and that been only DX9 release that did not hose up my Windows 9x rig. I would recommend checking card itself with thermal gun while in game. If glitches occurs while card is hot that is reason. MX400 can get over 50c with passive cooling. here during winter dark comes around 16 so I get many hours of CRT in dark room where colors are amazing. It makes many of my old videos look sharp. Yesterday I was watching Star Trek Motion Picture on it and colors and clarity was much better even compared to my high end Dell Studio LCD screen. There is not reason to update newer kernel on older HW until it is EOL. I only use latest stable kernel on my Server which runs QEMU and KVM since hardware on it is pretty new. Also I need to ask since might do some testing on my upgraded system does power management work on Devuan for CRT? If I tell CRT go sleep after certain time does it glitch out like did on my last tests? Also which driver you use?
  4. Iceape UXP seems to have few bugs. If I go to tools>web developer none of debugging tools seems to work. Nothing happens when i try open them. Also tried it on safe mode with same result. And second bug is related to safe mode where following error pops up. Same happens if I use shift method or help menu to access safe mode. I am running this on Windows XP SP3 X86 on few workstations and same issue also occured on Windows 7 64bit when tested. I also updated it to latest version without luck . I do not want switch between browsers when I need to use web developer tools
  5. those seems not to exist on some digital monitors. Last time I check my very dim 17" acer (goldstar tube) I did not find manual adjustments i usually found on older analog CRT monitor. Not sure from my Diamondtron since have not had need to adjust it yet. It is from 1998 and dimmer acer is from 1997 and both were left to one old office building for long time until friend of mine saved them to me. That building had lot of tubes and other stuff left when it was demolished but he was allowed get there only once and did not have anything to carry more with. I kinda wished would have been there with rented van to save more stuff. Many good tubes and old DEC mainframe atleast were crushed with building.
  6. I actually got one friend in Texas who visited there multiple times to get good hardware. I kinda wish we would have similar here but no since many places even trash motherboards with hammers "since they contain sensitive data". I have no idea where thing came from. That is true for some newer laptops with onboard EMMC storage, but desktop mainboards (expect maybe management engines) contain no company data. If very paranoid just wipe cmos and even on servers with ILO or similar remote management there is "emergency reset jumper" to wipe it clean from custom settings. I give my old hardware away for someone who need it or sell it away instead or trashing it. Best way to find free old hardware here is dumpsters and friends. People sometimes leave stuff visible on purpose so someone can pick it up. That is how I got my brother laser printer. Someone had left it next to garbage cans one place. I just put it on bag quickly and took away.
  7. I got few FSP power supplies running too without issues. I checked caps and they were not bulging and power supply produces proper power so it is fine enough. What I noticed is that pre 2010 channel well power supplies are almost certainly dead. All I had had bulging caps and strong smell of acid.
  8. It has been quite some time since got gear upgrade, but this time it was good one. One of my friend sent me old Pentium 3 desktop with price of postage for me. That machine had A-OPEN AX33 mainboard, 20gb Maxtor, 128mb ram, 866mhz Pentium 3 and Geforce 2 MX400 64MB. I ended up, upgrading RAM to 640mb, adding ESS SOLO1 audio card and replacing hard drives with 60gb samsung and 80gb seagate (sata ide adapter). That seagate been one of most reliable hard drives I ever had. It was in active use from 2005/2006 until 2015 when it was taken out of comission for larger drive. I did diagnostics to it and it is still kicking without issues. Here is picture from tower now. Currently it is waiting for Windows 98SE to be loaded. POMI branded tower on bottom got it original 266mhz celeron again and it will run windows 95. Black computer is my first computer with Windows XP SP3 and picture also got my printer. Black unit next to them is my Philips FW630 HI-FI system. (link to image for older browsers https://msfn.org/board/uploads/monthly_2022_02/1295497238_DSCN2512(Large)(Small).JPG.b38468ae3b3b6f341951592904fa4c8c.JPG) Also good to note for anyone with old hardware (not just Windows 98 era) make sure that GPU fan is not jammed like it was on Geforce 2 MX. I noticed it when was doing thermal gun testing and PCB was around 50c. I ended up doing ziptie fix to it (link to image for older browsers https://msfn.org/board/uploads/monthly_2022_02/701224157_MacGyverziptiefix(Small).JPG.a7d0258b523dc424100d81ad5a5003fb.JPG)
  9. Does someone have finnish version of localised update saved somewhere? I need to install it on my system. Or what lines do I need to alter on file to fix translation. I got unlocalised "finnish" update if that is needed
  10. Maybe I was bit unclear. Current spec claim that tables is only for "tabular data" and should not be used for anything else even before new broken standards came it was used for layouts too and did way better job than CSS to it with way less code. ... that was my initial though when I read that. I did not refer to pre 1996 layouts and I did not say CSS is bad. What I said was that they are making too much stuff with CSS these days because "we need to follow web standard". Maybe disable CSS for multiple web sites to see which of them work without it and not turn to Cuisinart. Here is good example. This is just one of many CSS lines in cnet https://www.cnet.com/a/fly/css/core/main.desktop-523b5d0a22-rev.css that and more is needed to render site proper In other hand here is minimal CSS from toastytech http://toastytech.com/guis/guimain.css Or for third lets take your site minimal CSS http://soggi.org/soggi.css even with CSS disabled only thing I lose is colours which was expected to happen. last two on list are very minimal and only uses CSS for what it is intended for. I did testing on your site with Netscape 3 which does not support HTML4 and it renders almost perfectly, only thing being CSS which was not fully implemented on it (but there is not reason run NSS3 on Pentium or faster with Windows 95 or newer since retrozilla) so I am not pointing finger to you or any other developer who does sites that way. P.S nice to see your legendary site still alive like back in day and that you did not force HTTPS for clients. Your sites belongs to my recommendations on good sites for that (compatible with old browsers, does not force js, no HTTPS forcing, easy to navigate and most important got enjoyable content)
  11. https://www.zdnet.com/article/the-pc-is-back-again-but-for-how-long/ I really don't know why did this topic pop back in surface, last time saw that any mentions "pc is dead" was back in 2013. Even after all these years pc never been dead. Reasons for dropping new prebuilt pc sales are multiple. Where I live most of people got used laptop/desktop or older pc that works for their use. Most of of those who got new pc built it themselves from off shelf parts. So there is why pc is dead, using statistics that do not reflect real world. Also reason for higher smartphone/tablet sales are because those devices generally less reliable. No user replaceable batteries, whole thing is glued together for "consumer benefit" resulting short lifespan. Second it many always want "teh latest and greatest" models when it comes out. Atleast all people I know/that been working for have computer in their house, but most of time it is older unit that been working just fine and they have not seen reason to upgrade it other than changing drive and adding ram and only people I know that do not have computer are elder people who do not even have smartphone so why are everyone saying pc is dead? Are they trying to boost sales of locked down non programmable devices aka smartphones and tablets with it? (I know there are new tablets/smartphones that are not like it but I rarely see them)
  12. You might need q242937 update for it to work. It updates WDM. Windows ME and 98 WDM were close to each others so generally ME drivers work on ME. But other way it usually resulted crash. When Windows 98SE came out Microsoft updated their driver development kit, but when Windows ME came Microsoft did not ship new version DDK fast enough and most vendors just used Windows 98SE WDM drivers for ME which was main reason for ME poor stability. I got Windows ME on my Compaq Presario 5000 and it is relatively stable when using proper drivers. But I personally keep Windows 98 SE as king of Windows 9x series. It is classic looking, it got dos mode, it got usb and fat32 support (well Windows 95b did too but was not so good) and with 98lite can make it look like 98 or 95 which is great- Ati Xpert was similar to quadro series (workstation card) as far as I know but it can run games. I used to have POMI MatkaMaxi notebook with 700mhz Pentium 3 and ATI XPERT98 and it could run half-life and viper racing. Sadly that notebook died for unknown reason and was unable revive it. I did not have that card but I had NVIDIA 6200TC 128mb which works without issues on 98. You need unofficial Nvidia drivers and unofficial shutdown hang fix. Also I recommend 915 series chipset max from intel for Windows 9x, since that had unoffical chipset driver. For AMD cant say for sure.
  13. I got one driver advice that could save someone nerves. I got ess solo 1 sound card on my Windows 98 pc that uses common ES1938 chipset that is great for sound blaster and midi support. Few days ago I tried record few clips using Microphone input but could hear nothing on audacity or at Windows native recorder. I was thinking port is busted but on Linux there was not issues. That is where having live bootable cd comes in handy. Issue was that drivers solo1_drv_w9x_4.12.01.1165.zip that is easiest to find on internet does not work proper on Windows 98 SE resulting Microphone only work if uses passtrough and even then it will be poor Drivers that work with 98SE are Windows ME WDM driver which can be found here: http://www.opendrivers.com/download/driver-11053.html pick 'ES1938_1946_Me3047.zip' from backup download link and use that for specific sound card. I put sha256 hash below if link dies and need try find the file. SHA 256: 6A2C810F06B6C8078F9F30E60966E6DCC5222435F6614E70CA174978F5BFCF03 That driver been in use for two days now and not a single crash. I got all expect NIC on WDM drivers after that.
  14. nitpick. I run my 17" Diamondtron at 800x600 to get 100hz refresh rate and it is just fine . Though what I find great on CRT is that it can view almost any resolution and any resolution looks sharp. That is beneficial to me since I prefer high refresh rate over high resolution. I know some who can watch CRT at 60hz without eye strain but for me only 100hz or more does not cause it. Also I finally solved my video playback issue on 98. H264 codec feels like mess on older hw. Sometimes even if file been encoded settings it should work on Pentium 3 it wont. I ended up using XVID codec with Libxvid on FFMPEG. Bitrate was 800kbps and resolution 640x480 max. I did encoding on my Ryzen PC since I built it originally for video encoding and cpu intensive stuff. I can say that my room was warm during that day. Videos looks sharp mostly though price of compression is slight pixelating here and there but I am happy could make them run without lags or being blurry. I mostly got older TV recordings from 1970s and up and older TV shows and older Music Videos. All of that is taking up near 60gb from Windows 98 pc Also I found some MPEG videos from Bomfunk MC in stereo special edition CD. That codec is not most space efficient but it can run on slower hw. Back in day some included videos on Audio CD and that is one example. I am collecting those old MPEG and AVI videos for the future
  15. Are you using Qemu on Linux? If do that is reason likely. Qemu is hypervisor while VMware workstation is virtualization software. Hypervisor is better on allocating resources than virtualization software. I actually prefer Qemu on Linux because it integrates better with hardware and it is best choice for server use. For me Zorin OS pro feels exploiting Linux newbies. They charge money for having few more applications installed from repository by default and having few extra wallpapers. And excuse pressing few buttons is too hard makes me ask how did they got Linux installed to begin with? Or maybe many falls for their trickery because Linux community does little to none to help. If you ask what is good starter distro, best distro for some purpose or anything else you will get 10000 different opinions. My distro recommendations are based on experience from users I helped install Linux on. Sadly one of recommendations Linux mint is on edge now by having deals with Mozilla which might involve some datamining considering amount Mozilla done it. Welcome to world where nothing is good option anymore
  16. actually that client is interesting as it is only that can connect to sftp server running on latest openssh client under unix based operating systems. All other vanilla supported clients fails for lack of algorithm support and openssh killed ability allow older ciphers with config .
  17. TS2 is not on package repositories as it is non free and also obsolete. I find it interesting that list mentions XMPP. It is very popular among privacy oriented people so I wonder how vulnerable it servers actually are? Well Linux great thing is firejail that allows somewhat isolate possible vulnerable sw from being able to damage system and there is other ways to harden it trying minimize damage. At the end only way to be 100% secure is unplug all computers from network (prevent network based attack), remove any wireless chips (prevent exploiting of wireless adapters), use wired keyboard (prevent keylogging wirelessly), unplug speakers (prevent using ultrasonic data transmission) and maybe toss whole computer away (no worry from getting hacked) . But that is unpractical way so you just need try harden configuration and have backups and hope for the best. Also I found another great utility for 98. CoreFTP. It allows to reach even modern SFTP servers. Pick 2.2 lite version from link below and during install choose ansi version. That had some issues on finnish Windows 98 that I assume are related to region but it likely works no issue on english or other region 98. http://www.coreftp.com/download.html
  18. I agree on this one. I used to be into noscript for quite time before was able to move to nmatrix but I can say it is superior after using few months to learn it. What is strange on noscript is that if I allow some domain on site a it is allowed one site b too. Nmatrix do not have that problem.
  19. ah yeah that is Palememe drama where Tobin decided to block Noscript for some personal reason. Noscript is fine. Reason it "breaks sites" is because it block JavaScript by default. Absolutely ridiculous reason to hard block it. Overall addon blocking is stupid idea, you give someone else control over what addons are ok and what are not. Go to settings>security and set addon security off. I wonder why@roytam1 left it on build since it keep pinging palememe servers. Could it be removed on future builds?
  20. I have been messing with Teamspeak 2 on Windows 9x. It is nice software for voice communication and got plenty of public servers and best of all allows to host your own private server. It runs without issues on my Pentium 3 under Windows 98SE. Despite server software being old I was able to make it run on modern day Linux. All expect WEB UI are fully functional on it. That is good example from proper self contained non bloated program and way programs should be. It only need Gclib which is included by default on most distros. I could have used it on Windows but Linux can be shrunk down more. Following notes on using it under Linux, you need 32bit or if cant get it multi-arch Linux distro. I used Devuan Linux, but Debian or other should work. Following server software is latest for linux: ts2_server_rc2_202319.tar.bz2 no download here because was unable find official mirror to it. Software is free for personal use so that is not an issue. Create non root Linux user and extract files to home directory. Then go to folder with command line/terminal and type following to start it: teamspeak2-server_startscript start and following to stop it teamspeak2-server_startscript stop For managing user permissions there is two ways. Way 1 is having copy of server software ts2_server_rc2_202319.exe on NT4 or newer Windows and using it to create users and then transfer server.ini and server.dbs into linux install Way 2 is login to server with latest teamspeak 2 client using built in account as credentials (you will find it on server.log file) and add new users by right clicking server on client. I was thinking this sits best to thread because it is one few remaining VOIP software that support 9x and allows self host.
  21. unless he got unit with DRM to prevent refill. I tried refill to friend inkjet. It went fine but printer gave error from cartridge due DRM counter had different value than ink level. I am not saying there is no way reset them, but feels ridiculous that I don't own cartridges on modern printer. Well 1l tank of printer ink costs way less than one "genuine" cartridge and I could even buy new ink printer with price of cartridges
  22. maybe I did not phrase myself correctly. I meant drive had so much bad blocks I could only use half of it capacity even after did proper wipe using manufacture util. It was retail hdd and was using it on my custom build. At that point I had no choice but try keep using it before was able get money for new drive. Luckily I no longer have to do that. Windows can convert any printer into network printer with few clicks. I use that on most cases but was thinking would be nice to have local access to scanner and printer on Windows 98 pc that is right behind workstation I am writing this from
  23. I have not used it but I have been able to use outlook 2002 last year on test for email. If you use provider like GMAIL or Posteo or Yahoo or some other that allows IMAP you need to do following. Make sure you enabled TLS 1.2 in internet explorer settings (you need to have TLS 1.2 patches installed). Then whatever provider you are using enable "app password" or "insecure login" option if yahoo or gmail and make sure IMAP support is enabled on any provider. Then add new account and configure it with following (in example of gmail) Arriving mail server settings: Type: IMAP Address: imap.gmail.com port: 993 Security: SSL / TLS Username: full email address Password: Gmail password/app password (if 2fa) Outgoing (SMTP) server settings: Server: smtp.gmail.com Port: 465 Security: SSL / TLS or SSL if tls is not available Username: full email address Password: Gmail password/app password (if 2fa)
  24. Been while since posted into this thread but I finally find proper printer for 98. I was able to dumpster dive (not that I would ever do it) Brother DCP 7010 printer+scanner. I did some tests and it smells like cigarette (been in smoking person house likely) but prints just fine and scans too. That smell bothers me a bit as I have never smoked but it will fade away eventually and I keep it next to open window. Drum life is at 15% and it still got toner left. I ordered new aftermarket drum rated 15 000 pages and toner rated at 2500 pages to have backup since they wont dry like inkjet and usually shaking cartridge fixes issue. Also finding replacements for older printers is getting harder and harder to make people consoom more but luckily brother seems use same design on many laser printers. I plan hook it with USB to my newer XP rig and Printer cable to my Windows 98 PC that got limited USB ports.
  25. I will be back next year. Tomorrow will be spending time elsewhere away from workstation without internet. I got some sparklers for tomorrow. I hope everyone happy new year here. Lets hope MSFN will survive from 2022 as this place is one of it kind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LtKbO8YVpg
