  1. Sorry again for posting lately (while having updated the mirror "instantly" on 2022/02/19)... The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, IceApe, IceDove, K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest K-Meleon 76 20220219 build - added latest New Moon 27 20220219 builds ---------------------------- I'm with you that such sentiments are extremely annoying, but I don't get at which point you came to the conclusion @Sampei.Nihira has such!? This wasn't the intention of his statement. Memory leaks - or "memory exploits" as he says - are even more annoying and hit security. So, cool down plz! BTW I still own my C64, but it's defect for years, unfortunately. Indeed, the C64 was my first own computer, but not the first I had to do with - the first was a Poly-Play arcade cabinet at a FDGB vacation home back then in GDR times, I guess. The last Apple browser for Windows is Safari 5.1.7, released in 2012 - I plan to add it to my website. kind regards soggi
  2. Having good code, which is just basic, leads to great compatibility with all browsers (and other software like crawlers or bots, if needed) and better search engine results. With diggin' deeper into all of this stuff I also had an eye on basic SEO (search engine optimization) and valid, short and snappy code is a mainstay of my success with it. Browsers may allow bad code and may display everything correctly, but you never know how a browser handles non-valid code - and it's even more vague for other applications. When it comes to HTML and CSS validators, I just can say that you can perfectly validate your code up to HTML 4.01 with the W3C Markup Validation Service for SGML applications (HTML, XHTML, ...) and CSS with the W3C CSS Validation Service. kind regards soggi
  3. Thx for making that clear! For over a decade, since I was digging deeper into basic HTML layout, my point of view is also "tables are just for tabular data". Table layouts worked, yes - but it has always been a misuse in my today's opinion. I'm not with you when you say table layouts did a better job than CSS and with less code - in my opinion the contrary is the case, table layouts are just bad practice (OK, frame sets - or even Flash - are worse although not being misuse/bad practice - Did you ever try the Wayback Machine on such pages?) and need more code, especially redundant code. You can also layout simple HTML pages w/o CSS and w/o the misuse of tables and they can have a great look despite that. BTW back then I decided to create the pages in HTML 4.01 Strict standard - so all the deprecated stuff got left out with still being very classic and compatible. (except some pages where I'm testing some HTML5 stuff like SM buttons) Your CNET CSS example shows the problem with auto-generated code, it's bloated without end. The toastytech and my CSS are simple, hand-coded and only contain the necessary things. With HTML it's the same, when you hand-code it you avoid all this fancy eye candy stuff which doesn't add any value to your content. Additionally I always had an eye on compatibility, usability, resource efficiency, security and last but not least data economy - my website is designed to run on as many browsers / OSes with the best (self-explaining) usability, lowest consumption of resources, highest security and best data economy as possible. The use of JS would contradict all of this (except usability), so the only JS is the Matomo tracker (with a PHP fallback, if JS is not supported or blocked). Concerning HTTPS this is a compromise as I don't want to exclude users with OSes and/or browsers w/o TLS 1.2+ support from my pages by activating a redirect or HSTS, despite the users in question per year can be counted by the fingers of two hands. But I'm offering content for older HW/SW and I know there are users visiting my website with such devices and with the trust in the service I'm offering. If I have the time, I will add a .htaccess rule to redirect newer browsers with TLS 1.2 support at least as I really recommend using HTTPS if possible. BTW I always have a thought about the wasting of energy - all this bloated JS (client-sided) and PHP (server-sided). The most Wordpress (Joomla, Drupal, ... whatever CMS) based pages have static content which could be simply done with HTML/CSS (and maybe a little of PHP and JS) with an extremely lower waste of energy and therefor a fraction of the cost (if someone only cares about the money). I love real standards and I love to be efficient and compatible...the only problem with my website is that it's not mobile compatible as there's no mobile/responsive design...but I can live with that. I also love to see that users like my pages and honestly appreciate the work behind the scenes (despite my not perfect English ), it naturally is music to my ears. My website especially was made for users like you @Mr.Scienceman2000, let me quote the best description I've ever read about my website...not to put myself into spotlight but to show the intention of the design/layout, a comment by morganvachon on Hacker News: Just my condensed two cents to this (off)topic... kind regards soggi
  4. Since when tables have been dropped from HTML specs? I use tables on my website for what they have been made for...tables. Tables have been misused - I would say abused - (even by myself as I didn't know better back then) to create menus, paragraphs and so on. Basic CSS is also very easy, but mightier - and it's the correct technique. CSS1 was published in 1996, CSS2 in 1998 - so you're referring to HTML standards from pre-1996!? CSS1, 2 or 2.1 isn't the problem...even CSS 2.2 shouldn't be a problem - all the bloated JS and especially all the JS frameworks are a problem! kind regards soggi
  5. Sorry, forgot to post last week as there was a downtime of MSFN when I wanted to... The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, IceApe, IceDove, K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest K-Meleon 76 20220212 build - added latest New Moon 27 20220212 builds kind regards soggi
  6. The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, IceApe, IceDove, K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest K-Meleon 76 20220129 build - added latest New Moon 27 20220129 builds ------------------------ It's "time to" when something is unrepairable - obviously this wasn't the case. Working old/vintage computers aren't junk, there are many people searching for this stuff for several reasons. The belt is a good and funny example - I'm a 90s child/teenager and I also still use a black leather belt from the 90s with a large but very stable buckle made of metal. It works as intended, it's a belt and it does what a belt is for. Why should I throw it away? I don't participate in every fashion and don't get all these fancy things which will be outdated tomorrow. You are right, there are two sides of the same coin, it's a two-edged sword...but the solution is not buy - throw away - buy - throw away - buy ...and so on. Now you know... Today it wouldn't be used for surfing (or not very often), but for old games and other software. kind regards soggi
  7. Why? There are a lot of people (like me) collecting old hardware, you even could have made some money out of it. kind regards soggi
  8. The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, IceApe (new!), IceDove (new!), K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest IceApe 52 20220122 build - added latest IceDove 52 20220122 build - added latest K-Meleon 76 20220122 build - added latest New Moon 27 20220122 builds - added latest New Moon 28 20220122 builds - added latest Serpent 52 20220122 builds - added latest Serpent 55 20220122 builds - as well as find out for yourself kind regards soggi
  9. I'm using NoScript for many years with FF, PM and now NM - w/o any problem regarding this message. I don't find it strange as this is the intention...you allow (or disallow) specific domains to execute JS. Usually you only allow the domain where the website you're visiting is situated (and maybe some cloud stuff additionally) and under normal circumstances this avoids all cross-domain things (trackers, GA, adds, ...). kind regards soggi
  10. I don't know which version number is checked, but if it is checked against Gecko version within the application.ini, you have to go down to 4.8.3. In general it shouldn't matter when you set MinVersion to 1.0. kind regards soggi
  11. I think you won't find anything which looks similar, but regardless of that you have to move on. IceApe is a suite with browser and mail client (like SeaMonkey), IceDove is a mail client only (like Thunderbird). There's also MailNews as a mail client (like Thunderbird), derived from Interlink Mail & News (by Matt A. Tobin). But don't ask me what the difference is between the last two. ---------------------------- The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, MailNews 52, K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest K-Meleon 76 20220115 build - added latest New Moon 27 20220115 builds kind regards soggi
  12. I also noticed that Google now looks kind of odd / fall-back design and thought it has something to do with the latest version of NM27. But I changed back to the previous version and it was still the same. So this has been changed by Google coincidentally at the ~same time! kind regards soggi
  13. Thx for the clear explanation...answered also some questions I had as I don't wanted to test all these builds myself to clarify their origin. Maybe I will add a very condensed version of it to my website. Sorry, took some days... The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, K-Meleon 1.5.x/74/76 (new!), MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest Firefox 45ESR 20220108 builds - added latest K-Meleon 1.5 20200131 build - added latest K-Meleon 74 20210814 build - added latest K-Meleon 76 20220108 build - added latest New Moon 27 20220108 builds - added latest New Moon 28 20220108 builds - added latest Serpent 52 20220108 builds - added latest Serpent 55 20220108 builds - as well as find out for yourself kind regards soggi
  14. There shouldn't be any SSE or even IA32 builds for Win64 as all x64 CPUs since the first Athlon 64 support SSE2 or even higher. Remind: SSE2 support by Intel AND AMD CPUs is available since 2003, all x86_64 CPUs have it! kind regards soggi
  15. @VistaLover all the things written above are right, but at the very first pull out the HDD to save your not back-uped data! Screen was frozen but just displayed the last frame, no BSOD? So the CPU should be OK - GPU maybe too, but maybe not. Sounds like Display, RAM or GPU RAM...or motherboard in the worst case. Are there any beeps when you're trying to start? As said above by others and myself, first pull out the HDD then test an external monitor, change RAM (if you have some spare RAM). Hopefully our advices will help you! Oh yes, the front window of my car got damaged by fireworks falling down on New Year's Eve while it was parked in a private backyard. kind regards soggi
  16. Happy New Year to everyone! The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest New Moon 27 20220101 builds kind regards soggi
  17. Uuh...that's ugly. As said above, the status bar is also important to me. I need it for add-ons (and their functionality) and to verify the URL of a link by hovering it! In my opinion removing the status bar is very idiotic...I noticed this many years ago in some FF version and just shook my head... kind regards soggi
  18. The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest New Moon 27 20211225 builds That's because I don't know all the builds and their derivation, maybe they will be added in the future. What is the always-on status bar? Do you mean that the status bar is always shown? That's also important to me. kind regards soggi
  19. The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - find out for yourself BTW thx for notification @IXOYE! -------------------------------- @roytam1, I had the time to test the latest builds with Matomo and the Matomo demo page (demo.matomo.cloud) has also been updated to the latest version 4.6.x. Firefox 45ESR 20211218 and New Moon 28 20211218 works great with Matomo, but New Moon 27 20211218 doesn't. Is it possible to let NM27 work again with Matomo? Let me know, if you need any further information! kind regards soggi
  20. The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest Firefox 45ESR 20211218 builds - added latest New Moon 27 20211218 builds - added latest New Moon 28 20211218 builds - added latest Serpent 52 20211218 builds - added latest Serpent 55 20211218 builds <OT> This may be correct and I also gave you a like for this post, but what you wrote about autistic people (in general!) is derogatory and "dumb" (to quote yourself) . Or do you mean "dumb" as "not able to speak"? But this is also wrong... Talking about Matt A. Tobin is another thing and I want to quote myself from VOGONS: </OT> kind regards soggi
  21. As a user of phpBB (or any other OSS software) I have the possibility to edit and change the source code, but have to be a developer who's able to do so (I'm definitely not). Furthermore I can always ask for support and open a ticket. But that's all I can do. And it's also not as simple as you think, there's quite no monolithic software project - the larger a project the more dependencies (like several libs) it has. Even if the developers of a specific project want to be compatible to older browser or OS versions, often it's not in their hand as they would have to reinvent the wheel by developing their own version of a lib. This is almost impossible and always a bad idea, because you will create a lot of holes (if you're able to develop a working version) and waste a lot of time which you can't spend to your project. kind regards soggi
  22. Tell this the developers of all the frameworks, CMS, bulletin boards and so on which are widely and mainly used by today's websites. The website owner itself isn't the developer in the very most cases. For example, if I would have a bulletin board for my users, I would take phpBB and have to take what they offer with no chance to change anything (except visual things like themes). kind regards soggi
  23. @NotHereToPlayGames: First you say "the "internet"", but you're just talking about the WWW which is just a very little part of the Internet. Second the "Invision Community" provides the forums / bulletin software. MSFN, respectively it's owner, has to choose one of the forums / bulletin softwares which are available on the market (OSS, freeware or payware). The point is that for security reasons you have to choose a software which is currently in development. You don't want to have a software running on your server which has a lot of SQL/PHP/etc. security holes. The bad news is that support for older browsers is not integrated in the very most of these software projects. Now you can say "I want to have support for all browsers released since the early 90s!", but then you have to develop this software by your own...have fun! If you want to have a website which is compatible with very old browsers, then you have to go with HTML4 only (like my website), but this is not today's technology, obviously. And my website is hand-coded, completely...have fun again (thousands of hours, maybe ten thousands)! Don't get me wrong, I really like old-school websites (like my own), but you can't provide any additional functions (like forums / bulletins) in a secure way, if you aren't a very good PHP/JS developer with a lot of free-time. Soooo - at the very most you have to take what's on the market! kind regards soggi
  24. The mirror of latest BNavigator, Firefox 45ESR, MailNews 52, New Moon 26.5/27/28 and Serpent 52/55 builds by @roytam1 has been updated -> soggi.org - tools. changelog: - added latest New Moon 27 20211211 builds kind regards soggi
  25. Hey @Mathwiz, thx a lot! There was no setting general.useragent.override (first screenshot below), so I just added it via right-click -> New -> String, set it to Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:4.8) Goanna/20211001 PaleMoon/28.10.4a1 - and it really works (second screenshot below)! @roytam1 so it is maybe possible to make NM27 work with Matomo 4.6.x!? kind regards soggi
