Did you note that there are different PID numbers for sp2 and pre-sp2? be sure you are using the right one.
  3. Hmm, the zilla data-nuker I have is free version. http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/Zilla-Data-...2-10320324.html But Eraser is better anyway, thats why I put it first.

    ramdisk xp

You could try qsoft ramdisk. doubt you will get the os to run from it, but the game maybe. do install of game to drive b:, then zip it up and unzip to ramdisk again when you want to play. http://www.ramdisk.tk/

It is possible to make OEM key work on retail CD if you rebuild it. Maybe not strictly kosher EULA wise... I let you decide. The answer is in this thread. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...44089&hl=retail see johnmallan post
  7. This may sound silly, but did you check "add/remove programs"? This program is available for sale as a legit product. since it is advertising its presence it is doubtful that it is an attack. BTW, how you make out with lost partitions? http://www.ardamax.com/keylogger.html
  8. What is telling you that you have unknown partitions? your testdisk screenshots look ok as far as I know (I am not an expert with testdisk, just used it to undelete some partitions on occasion). I don't see any partitions marked "D" for deleted. Have you tried booting from the install cd into recovery console and looking if the drive is accessable? If you can see your drives you can always copy the files off them. Be aware that any failed attempts at partition recovery can complicate retrieval, so again, if your data is very valuable I would take it to a pro. This is from testdisk docs. you can generate a log and email to them to analyze.
  9. Yes, good point about memory test. could also just be a matter of cleaning the ram card edge and reseating. same with processor, cards and cables. Like you say, is guessing game with random lockups. I would also flash to latest bios.
  10. No, I just boot from floppy and xcopy /s the cd to HDD (if you had a floppy). If you have 2 cd roms you could make a dos bootable cd and boot from one and copy from the other. if only one cd, make a dos bootable disk with setup files on it. Installing drive in other machine to format and copy like you say would work just as well, then you just need boot cd. Edit: thinking on it a little more, if you do put it in another box to format and copy, you could also sys at the same time. boot from floppy to sys if your box is xp. then disk will boot itself. XP will just ask if you want to replace previous OS.
  11. sorry. was gonna say testdisk. how did it fail? there is a shareware called active recovery, but I never tried it. Testdisk always worked for me unless disk had physical damage. http://www.handyarchive.com/Utilities/Back...n-Recovery.html If your data is REALLY valuable to you I would not mess with it, and take it to a professional data recovery firm.
  12. No right answer to this, but "often" should cover it. I have scheduled task set up to run dirms every morning at 3:00 AM, along with virus and spyware scans. That way I never have to worry about "running" them.
  13. Have no idea if this will help your problem, but I did an install once that kept crashing when installing from CD, but completed successfully by copying setup to HDD, booting from floppy and running "winnt.exe" setup from c:. Like I said, no idea if this will help, but if you are grasping straws..... EDIT: You did check for bios update, right?
  14. I am nobody? Or you not read whole thread?
  15. I mean when executing a program from command line or batch and the program you are installing is on the same drive you don't need the drive letter, just the path from root, so if you have a program named myapp.exe in a folder named install, you just need the command "\install\myapp.exe <switches> you dont need the drive letter, it is implied to be the current drive, whatever it is.
  16. Do you really need the cd drive letter? If the programs are running from cd you should be able to refer to the drive as simply "\" , with the current drive implied?
  17. Controls can also be conditionally repositioned and resized at runtime using Top, Left, Height and Width properties.

  20. @Zxian Sounds way cool. You are designing electronic circuits as well as prograqmming? A true geeks dream!!! Have you ever used ICAP/Spice http://www.intusoft.com/ Very powerful schematic designer- circuit simulator. Enjoy tomorrow, but don't grin too much or people will think you are up to something...
  21. Well, start with the basic display then add your exceptions. sometimes this involves enabling/disabling or hiding/unhiding controls according to current conditions. If it really has more exceptions than you can explain you are in trouble. You need to be able to explain it, both to yourself and others.
  22. This is something you can set up in your firewall rules. Just exclude all sites but the one you want.
  23. Interface design is more art than science. Like I said, solicit opinions from end users. They often have ideas on what interface should be like. You just need to consider what you are trying to accomplish. What information gets presented on screen, what controls to display them in, these are subjective things with no correct answer. It will be an iterative process of test and refine.
  24. They make the browser so much more functional, each to his own tastes. I am using them constantly. They are certainly worth the overhead, whatever it is. And like I said before, what is RAM for if not to load with code. The days of obsessing over free disk space and RAM usage should be long gone with todays hardware prices. EDIT: And I just picked up your bookmark sort and minimize to tray. 23 and counting. Good thread
  25. Congratulations Zxian You must have really impressed them if they called back that quick! Sounds like interesting work for worthy cause. Best of Luck to You!
