My Browser Builds (Part 5)

Odd thing is that sometimes ads were shown (before the latest cert update)... -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
modnar replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Is there any particular reason that I do not see ads on e.g. videocardz.com, linuxliteos.com and various other sites when updated certificates with @heinoganda's 1.6 cert updater in Serpent 52.9 (on WinXP with harkaz's uSP4)? -
I guess he died of boredom.

Do you honestly expect me to let my graphics card idle while the CPU has to perform graphics tasks? That's not a solution. But it is passed around as such on quite some forums... Ebay.de works well here, I believe apart from site un-optimizing/bloating, P4's 2 FPU pipelines aren't doing it any favors (P3 had 3, Athlons too). I had maybe the fastest P4, single core engineering sample, of Cedar Mill with HT (3.6GHz) in one of my machines and it was so sadly slow compared to normal processors. Intel debauchery, nothing more, too big to fail they said, now look at them - delisted from DOW, replaced by nVidia and rightfully so. -

What if we don't finy any suitable OS to upgrade to from XP? I certainly do not. It all went downhill with "modular Windows" (Vista and up) and still going, fiercely. Anyhow something seriously has to be done with Serpent/UXP browser bombarding D3D(9) library with graphics calls. See? Not off topic. Edit: layers.prefer-d3d9=True doesn't help (much)... -

Read for example here and here. That is to say startpage.com now apparently uses Bing too as well as all the others... -

Perhaps try startpage.com (a NL based privacy search page that searches with Google, while the Duck searches with Bing). -
I have an outrageous request - please port the Filter Manager (fltmgr.sys with fltlib.dll and fltmc.exe) from Windows 10 to Windows XP SP3 - the .5512 (SP3) version is functional but somewhat limited.

how fix SoundBlaster emulation?
modnar replied to Joaquim's topic in Windows XP Media Center Edition
If it is lagging even with VDMSound, just run your programs/games through DOSBox. It's newer - with more functions than VDMSound. I never experienced lag with DOSBox. -

You need no mobile version, just normal version with h264ify extension (in Serpent 52.9). And yeah their HD quality is not what it used to be - I believe they're just saying it's at 1080p when in reality they're doing some monkey business in the back. -

I use it with Serpent 52.9; download Firefox addon h264ify (v1.1) it installs and works well in Serpent and Youtube works much better/normally again. -

I tested further: hardware acceleration (via g. angle) does not cause the problem. Here's the app_compat report from my VM (if it possibly helps any)... c7bd_appcompat.txt P.S.: MailNews 2024-10-12 also crashes as soon as I click on email in my inbox that has pictures attached to it. -

Additional info: even on RT's blog Serpent 52.9 (x86) crashes when those little pictures/icons of followers are shown. Temporary fix: I just copied gkmedias.dll from previous Serpent 52.9 package (2024-10-05) and 2024-10-12 version works flawlessly. The older version of gkmedias.dll is 9.52MB, the newer is 9.40MB. Something important got left out apparently. -

Heh! This is a good one - latest Serpent 52.9 clean profile or previously used I get gkmedias.dll error when going to these sites (just started browsing today): sapphiretech.com, msfn.org (My Browser Builds (Part 5)) and probably all others. The best part is that I can write this reply while message about basilisk.exe encountering an error window is inactive but on top of browser's. Please fix it... -
Just use DOSBox for DOS games, it's much more reliable (audiolag is a know problem in NT cmd). In Win2000 times there was DOSBox ancestor named VDMSound...

I've just read this on TheRegister (about a firefixed flaw in Fireferret=). Does it mean anything for our UXP browsers? And by the way - why does imgur.com perform so badly in Serpent 52.9 (in recent releases) - videos/images just start to load very slowly - is it the RAM? It used to perform smoothly not so long ago. -

Interesting. Could this be malware or fragmentation problem? Long ago when I had Diskeeper 10 (not 2010) on and every option turned off (it was inactive) when I opened firefox and browsed around the Windows just crashed/restarted from heavy fragmentation. Then I finally installed DK2011 (in 2013) and never again any problems. -

It's not crap at all with h264ify. Windows is usually crap (but with potential). Now I'm interested what was written in that blue screen (you probably have auto-restart @bluescreen ON)? -

Not here - in Serpent 52.9 22-9-2024 it's not working (buffering but not garbled picture anymore), but that's alright, h264ify makes 1080p videos work flawlessly. -

@roytam1 please, would you fix Mail clients links. -
Instead of using plain XP_SP3 you could install XP_SP3 and then Harkaz' fine Unofficial Service pack 4 - it contains .NET things, but there is a procedure to follow. VisualC redist you can use from Abbodi from mydigitallife. Maybe such a system would be more workable...

Just a heads up - to watch videos on Youtube normally @1080P (with RT's Serpent 52.9) you may need to download the h264-ify firefox extension. Latest (v1.1) works well in Serpent. -

It is instantaneous here either way (Serpent 52.9 on good ol' XPSP3 (USP4_Harkaz)). -
@Multibooter you should know that these fixes only get applied when you write/import them into registry and then restart Windows (these are really low level/near hardware system settings). There is strong possibility the settings weren't even applied (applying them in a Sandbox - you can't restart such a system...). NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate_1 is not really appropriate for Windows XP - it causes more fragmentation of normal files (and I've used this tweak the longest time). To remove it from your system delete it from (Registry) HKeyLocalMachine/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Filesystem so there are only 3 factory entries: NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation (0), Win31FileSystem (0), Win95TruncatedExtensions (1) and reboot. If you have Diskeeper, lack of NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate is not felt (speedwise) and Diskeeper protects the disk from unnecessary work. Edited GroupOrderList values have to be as long as the factory ones, that means 03 entries for SCSI_Class and 0b entries for Filter otherwise internet browser crashes sometimes (observed). They are posted in my previous post on page 2 of this topic. Nothing more to add - with factory XP filesystem settings, sbiedrv happily works without Load Order Group.
-
Primary disk is better left factory (05, as in newer Windows) - nothing problematic, just overall behaviour. GroupOrderList_Primary_Disk_05_XP_USP4.reg
